The first two rules of Fight Club is brilliant, because it explicitly tells people who have seen the movie not to spoil the big twist by telling people about Fight Club. It was a viral movie meme that served a real purpose, and worked like a charm. There was a similar (but far less iconic) line in the Matrix, also a 1999 movie, "no one can tell you what the Matrix is, you have to see if for yourself"

The writing in this is so layered and clever (mostly thanks to Chuck Palahniuk, I think I spelled that right.) The part where Ed Norton's character says "I knew the story before he told me." Has two meanings, one being that he could guess what happened knowing both Tyler and Marla and two being that he literally experienced it as Tyler so knew the story first hand.
@LordVolkov

It's right at the beginning too. "I know this, because Tyler knows this" is one of the most blatant foreshadowing lines and the reveal can still drop like a bomb.

OMG nothing beats watching someone react to the big reveal of this movie. And you're absolutely right that you'll love watching it again to notice the bread crumbs that were missed this time. Favourite part of your reaction was the perfect drop of the Pixies song which made so many people fall in love with them around that time and to this day I picture that scene when the song plays. Great reaction as always ✌️

Agreed, there are so few of them that catch on to the reveal until it's explicitly pointed out. Even though, at least on rewatching, there are more than enough hints about what's going on. My wife ruined it when I made her watch the movie and told me that people with that kind of multiple personalities are never aware of the secondary personalities and go through the "switch" that was brought up every time. So, the movie doesn't really work in a real life sense because narrator would never be able to interact with Tyler Durden and would instead feel like his life was being attacked by Tyler Durden, even though they are the same person.

This was the movie that made me realize Brad Pitt was more interesting than his early roles implied. He became a star doing somewhat formulaic pretty-boy roles, then once he had some fame he started doing movies like this and 12 Monkeys.

An interesting thing about Marla's line "you're the worst thing that ever happened to me" a lot of people miss is that in a weird way, it's also a compliment. Marla as a character is obsessed with terrible things happening, with death, with pain and suffering etc. So for her to say that something was the worst thing she ever experienced is actually a plus for her, not a negative.

"Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of Raymond K. Hessel's life. His breakfast will taste better than any meal you or I will ever eat." I gotta say, there was a certain beauty in that. Psychotic, but beautiful. Frequently people just drift through life, but those who have had a brush with death often find a new sense of drive and purpose because they appreciate the frailty and finite limit of our existence.

@@aTofuJunkie Its probably true for every corner of art, since a portion of it is specifically designed with the masses in mind, instead of people who are passionate about the medium. Regarding "Inception", I get how it might feel overrated for some, but I think that overall its a pretty good movie none the less. However, a movie I actually consider underrated, as well as the mindblower most people view "Inception" as, is "Tenet".

This movie really messes with your mind: we know that Jack (otherwise known as 'The Narrator') has mental health issues, but that all pales in comparison to the big reveal, giving this movie an epic plot twist. BTW, thanks for leaving in "Slide" (both versions) it's a good insight into Jack's mental state, and makes for a good ending when you realise Marla's not the bad guy/girl here.

The OST is brilliant, Dust Brothers Also, beautiful thing about this film (or tragic) is that he finds the solution right in the beginning; it was to share and cry, he felt perfect afterwards - however, he fixated on the social-club aspect of the emotional release, for then to dump all of his weird baggage into the design of his own club. (Fans of the movie tend to use "Jack" for the main character _I am Jack's medulla oblongata_ etc.)

So I went and seen this on opening weekend back in 1999, and there were only a few people in the theater(because the movie pretty much bombed at the box office), and honestly I was pretty torn about how I felt about the movie when it was over... But when I picked it up an DVD and watched it a few more times, I realized just how amazing it is! And now when somebody asks me what my favorite movie of all time is, I immediately think of 3 movies... The Fifth Element, The Crow, and FIGHT CLUB!

Tyler was a figment of the narrator's psychosis. The psychosis was induced by sleep-deprivation (his insomnia). When the narrator crashed the car, he was knocked out, which caused hime to sleep. When he woke up, Tyler was "gone" (really, the narrator was just refreshed and clear-headed). Then, he started traveling the country looking for Tyler (and not sleeping); Tyler reappeared.

It’s been theorized that the Narrator’s name is Jack from the whole I am Jack’s sayings If you didn’t catch it while editing, the person that flashes super quick early on is Tyler, every time. It’s foreshadowing him before he appears Some other hints about Tyler’s true nature: •There’s a promotional video on a hotel tv with a group of hotel employees saying welcome. The one in the middle is Tyler. •When Lou first punches Tyler, you can see Jack lower his head as if he felt it •When Jack beats himself, he says he was reminded of his first fight with Tyler. •And when they crash and the car is flipped upside down, Tyler comes out of the passenger side and pulls Jack out of the driver side

I'm sure others will by now have pointed out in great detail all of the little hints that we get throughout the movie of what's going on, that almost all of us (me included) don't put together until the big reveal. Yes, you'll want to watch it again, as so many things you see or hear take on an entirely new meaning when you know (ex: when beating himself up in his boss' office, he comments that for "some reason" it reminds him of his first fight with Tyler). Such a well-done movie. And yes, you definitely want to watch 12 Monkeys. It's another mind-twist, with one of Brad Pitt's best performances. Many people think he got snubbed at the Oscars on that one. For a completely different viewing experience, yes, you'll want to watch Forrest Gump.

Huge fan of Chuck Palahnuik. He is definitely an intense writer and he has such a twisted dark sense of humor but that’s what I love about his style. This film is iconic and i remember seeing it in the theater when it was released. I feel like David Fincher is really the only one who could’ve pulled off this movie. Fincher is known for his crime thrillers like Se7en also starring Brad Pitt as well as Morgan Freeman. He also directed Zodiac, another crime thriller, a movie based on the real life Zodiac murders. Which in my opinion is one of his top best films and I highly recommend you react to it.

As long as you're asking for suggestions I'll throw out Zodiac, another Fincher film and one of my favorite movies of all time. Very different from this obviously, a true story, but still has Fincher's trademark masterclass editing and pacing. EDIT: the main character is nameless, both in the film and the novel. He's often referred to as Jack, just as a shorthand, in reference to the "I am Jack's _______" lines. It might even be that way in the credits but I can't remember.

Meat Loaf has been in a bunch of films, but they're generally not "must-see" viewing. Other than Fight Club, the one people are most likely to know is The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) in which he had a small role.

Yes, you *should* watch 12 Monkeys -- as well as *every* other Terry Gilliam film you can find. Also, since you liked the direction here, I was *going* to suggest The Game, another of David Fincher's and another similar wild ride. But I see you've already covered that.

Of course Jen would love this amazing movie!!! Definitely watch it multiple times, because there is always something to catch each time you watch it... Also there are a ton of video essays on YT, and some of them are mond blowing! One of them was about how not only was Tyler just a figment of his imagination, but so was Bob, Marla, and all of Project Mayhem! Boom! Mind blown!

@@jenmurrayxo I don't really love the idea of Project Mayhem being all in his head, but the scene where "Jack" is in the bar trying to figure out where Tyler is, the bartender with his head in the halo appears out of nowhere, which only makes sense if he's a figment of his imagination...

My pet Fight Club theory. It's a story about a man coming to grips with his death. Norton is the guy, Marla is the tumor and Pitt is the portion of the guy that wants to live and deny that he has a terminal illness. His insomnia is his preoccupation with his impending death. The fight club is his desire to hurt the world, to hurt the people that aren't riddled with cancer.

At the end, if you listen carefully when he says; "You met me at a very strange time in my life.", you can hear a combination of Edward Norton _and_ Brad Pitt's voices, showing that the Narrator has reintegrated the "Taylor Durden" personality.

Meat Loaf's other most well-known role is a small but important character in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and it is one of the greatest musicals ever. People will argue that the only way to experience the movie is live in the theater with audience participation, and while that is definitely an experience you should put on the list if you enjoy the movie, you definitely should watch it first on your own for the channel!

Yeah, you need to read the book, it similar to movie, but few differences, but your reaction is great. Also names on jack name tags are characters from planet of the apes movies, also the punch that Ed Norton does to Brad Pitt in there first fight was real punch to ear. Brad did not know where he was going to hit and rolled with it

Another great reaction! Your channel is quickly becoming one of my very favorite react channels. And the giant frowny face when you saw the sticker about recycling animals cracked me up. 🤣🤣 I was 100% sure I would never be interested in watching this movie, so I watched a reaction to it a while ago because I didn't care about spoilers. And then it turned out to be so much more interesting than the title suggested to me and I ended up being sad that I spoiled it for myself. I did still enjoy it when I watched the full movie though. Oh. And to answer your questions, yes, you should absolutely watch both "12 Monkeys" and "Forrest Gump." Both are definitely worth watching. Also, another movie with Edward Norton (the narrator of "Fight Club") is "Rounders", which stars Matt Damon, and was way more interesting than I expected it to be when I originally saw a synopsis.

There is a large subset of fans of this film who don’t realize that Tyler is supposed to be the villain. He’s meant to be a perfect example of how a cult leader can recruit the disillusioned. He appeals to legitimate problems but takes the solutions to the extreme.

This movie came out when I was 16 and it helped me to put words on my anger issues about me, my insignificance, my inadequacy to accept to live in an increasingly feminized society where being a "man" is reduced to buying crap, getting ripped, stay in rank and accept to be some rich loser's little money monkey. Repressing any violent thoughts, inconditionnally respect social hierarchy, never cry, never complaint, never fear, breed, buy, be strong, die alone... This movie managed to articulate my mal-de-vivre when I needed it the most. And just when I thought this book/movie was made for me, it is revealed that The Narrator's (Norton's character) real name is Sebastian. Like me! :P
