The military decision making on this show is always top notch. Worf's objection to Riker comes from his opinion as Security Officer. The defense of the ship is his mission.
@jimj972918 сағат бұрын
You have got to be kidding! This show does not know anything about how a real military functions. Worf's recommendations are overruled, dismissed, or even openly ridiculed at least 90% of the time. You only have to go back to "I Borg " to witness the poor military decisions the Picard makes. His military duty was to destroy the Borg. Instead, he felt sorry for one individual and condemned countless billions to death and assimilation. NO real military would ever have allowed the Picard to remain in command after he had been assimilated, and after the events of 'I Borg," he should have been relieved and court martialed. But this is Star Trek, and he is the Picard.

@@E_y_a_l Whatever the Picard has said in the past, Starfleet uses a military command structure, trains by participating in war games, patrols Federation territory and its borders with heavily armed starships, has actually fought several wars against opposing military forces, and it operates an academy to train and maintain its officer corps. Its personnel wear military uniforms with rank insignia and are awarded medals for service and valor. Personnel are subject to military court martial in cases of misconduct. I suggest the Picard has been spreading misinformation, if not outright propaganda. Starfleet is a military. It is poorly disciplined and suffers from questionable leadership, but it is a military.
@E_y_a_l3 сағат бұрын
@@jimj9729 Are you arguing with me or Gene Roddenberry? because according to Roddenberry who was still around in the second season, Starfleet is not a military organization, period, and everything you said including uniforms, ranks and awards for service can describe non military organizations as well including fast food burger restaurants...in my country first responders like police, paramedics and firefighters has all of those things but they are not part of the military, and, if you took the time to watch the scene where Picard addresses the subject then you would see that he also say that the purpose of Starfleet is exploration but because of the Borg threat they make an exception, in other words, it's not a military organization by design but can perform military tasks when needed, which is different than being a military and can in-world explain any decisions that are not on par with what you would expect from a military.

Samuel Clemens was a humorist, author, and over the course of a long and storied life held many occupations. His pen name 'Mark Twain' was actually a nautical term from his days as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River, and referred to a depth sounding. Deck workers would throw a weighted rope off the bow, with markings on it for various depths, and would call out the depth up to the pilot house. 'Mark Twain' referred to 'twain fathoms' or two 6-foot fathoms of depth, safe water, with shallower depths posing increasing levels of risk.

Mark Twain was Clemens' alternate name. When he was younger, or so the story goes, he used to work on a riverboat in 1857 and earned his pilot's license two years later. With riverboats, after the rainy season, sometimes the river's course would change and so would the depth. So when the person in charge of calling out depths to see if it was safe enough to put a steamboat through saw that it was deep enough (2 fathoms or about 12 feet) they would call out Mark Twain!

Clements got the name Mark Twain by the call of riverboat crew "By the mark, twain!" A sailor dropped a lead weight attached to a string to the bottom, and the line was marked at intervals to let him read the water depth. That's the "mark" part. Twain means two. So the call means there are at least two fathoms, or 12 feet, of water under the boat - enough to operate safely.
@larrybremer493013 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the information. I used to do a lot of blue water sailing yet never made that connection . It makes perfect sense that riverboats would need to take soundings often because the Mississippi river is usually wide but not very deep. In many areas there are sand bars that shift their positions seasonally and over spans of years so for even the most experienced pilots the river was always always changing.

Encoding a message into Data has a better chance of surviving 500 years. A piece of paper might decay. So the captain did it the smart way. However, if Data had been powered on too late, it would not have worked well, either. He could have etched a message into some metal or other part that would last, and perhaps add the other encoded message for more info as a follow-up.
