I loved SG-1, but the universe is too large for any reaction channel. Over 350 episodes and 2 additional movies would be like a part time job just watching let alone editing. Edit. I stand corrected, with some channels with a TV or Scifi focus having attempted it (generally years in and not completed but chugging away). Even though SG-1 is one of my favorite shows I would much rather see 100 different movies from Jen over a single TV universe.

@itzbp9949 Well practical effects don't change. An explosion 20 years ago looks the same as an explosion now or in 20 years. While CGI is ever evolving. That's why the stargate opening still holds up, because it's a practical effect of actual water. While the even horizon of the stargate doesn't look great and people nowadays could make a better looking effect at home on a normal PC thanks to modern fluid simulations. Depending on the CGI quality it can still hold up decades later. First Contact came out only a few laters and still ups very well.

@@bemasaberwyn55 Joel Goldsmith also wrote some pieces for "Star Trek First Contact" together with his father. He later wrote a lot of great music for "Stargate SG-1". Even created his own themes like for the Ori arc. That music from the TV-movies "Ark of Truth" and "Continuum" are masterpieces. The title sequence of "Ark of Truth" alone when the music changes from the classic Stargate theme to the Ori theme is brilliant. I talked to him a few times in the forum on his website back in the day. I'm still sad Joel passed away so early.

You should definitely check out the TV series, "Stargate SG-1." It's one of the top tier SF series (although it's got some early installment problems in its first season). It follows after the events of the movie. It retcons a few things to better fit an ongoing series, but not all that much. There were a couple of further spinoff series, which are fun if you do enjoy SG1 but aren't on the same level.

Respectfully disagree. I think we've just convinced ourselves it looks just as good. CGI is at its best when it supports a scene, not when it's the focus of one. At least IMO.
@jacob4920
@jacob4920 Жыл бұрын
There are times when each method of special effects is better than the other. In the big picture, no science fiction film would be complete without either. It's up to the director to make certain that each is used properly, in its' own best case, and to make certain the CGI is the best it can possibly be. Because bad CGI can ruin a scene, as much as great CGI can make a scene ICONIC!

Some of us cook rather than microwave. Maybe I enjoy my furniture reeking of a culinary victory. With practical effects, I enjoy it on the surface and also appreciate the work that went into creating what I see. Like sitting near the kitchen, you enjoy the experience. CGI is CGI. It's awesome. Takes talent. YAAAYyawn. I don't mean to come across as elitist, how frequently do you support your local theatrical troupe? No Fx, just acting. The core of this medium.

One of the things that keeps this movie going briskly and makes it a delight to watch is that basically everyone is clever, competent, and perceptive. I know it's been said by other viewers, but here's my two cents...EXCELLENT choice of this movie. If you really want to get hooked, just watch the first episode of Stargate SG1, and you won't be able to stop.👍

Ok, earlier, when Ra's Jaffa in their Death Gliders ("Him-shiao" according to Skaara) were bombing the village you could hear them shouting "Rihu Nane!" Maybe that was part of it, but I get the meaning to be either "Ra is Victorious" or "Do not defy Ra". At times we hear Skaara shouting "Nane! Nane!" so it may simply mean "no" or imply negativity.. " At 30:42 Skaara is drawing with chalk on a slate, and when Daniel asks him what he's writing he says "Nena-khai", which in the subtitles reads "The day of our victory." In the next scene, after they bushwhack the Jaffa supervising their daily tasks Kasuf urges them all to kneel and pray to Ra for forgiveness, but then Daniel triggers the collapse button on their helmets and says "Yememaye naturu-ti! Yememaye!" (Take a look at your Gods! Take a good look!) Earlier in the film Sha'Uri (In the series she is renamed Sha'Re for easier pronunciation) shows Daniel how to pronounce the letters of their language. ("Nedjer-u" became "Naturu" and so on...". So it would seem to me that Abydan, which is supposed to be based on Tuareg or Berber or the language of the Old Kingdom of Kemet (their word for Egypt) is at least a semi-agglutinative language

SG-1 ended up being a tremendous show, right up your alley, though I prefer Stargate Atlantis. Starts with somewhat corny, one episode space adventures, but turns into great arc space adventures with greatly written adventurers (team!), then into some pretty epic stuff. Give it a try- but if you do, keep going even if you don't love the first few episodes. I really think you'll love this world. And the fanfic is LEGENDARY, especially for SGA.

7:55, this is awesome how they did this: they filmed a water tank, but with the camera tilted on its side, while the VFX artists dumped bricks or rocks as well as large quantities of Alka Seltzer to give it that foamy look. They used a little bit of CGI to remove the bricks.

Roland Emmerich did Godzilla (1998) its kind of a cult based movie nowdays, and billion times better than we got after 2000's. He also did The Day After Tomorrow (2004), which btw imo is the best distaster movie in that period in time when everyone and their mother were doing disaster movies.

The key to why Independence Day and Stargate were so good is probably Emmerech’s collaboration with Dean Devlin. I never thought he did as well on his own. They also did a Godzilla movie together after those two, which was not well received, and that seems to be when they quit working together.

Spoilers ahead if you haven't watched the shows. When Daniel said that he didn't know who built the Pyramids. Did anyone notice the sarcastic remark about people from Atlantis? Obviously he wasn't talking about the Gates at that time, but I just found that to be a pretty neat coincidence.

Once again, i love your love of music! Too many people just gloss over the small parts of a soundtrack. I love that you relate to the nerd! There are more of us than them! Little things you say like "oooh quartz!" just make my day. The main charachter (James Spader) also played Ultron in the MCU. Now that's range!

Great reaction, Jen. 214 episodes of SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe as well as 2 SG-1 Direct-to-DVD movies now await you. Different production team, so a lot of recasting and some retcon-ing but you're going to love it! Also, the shows were made in Vancouver, so go Canada. :) I love the scene between Daniel Jackson and Sha'uri when Sha'uri teaches Daniel the language. This is a real issue we have with Egyptian hieroglyphics as they in general do not indicate the vowels. A simple example is the name of Egypt in the Egyptian language. In hieroglyphics is appears as kmt, and it has been a tradition among Egyptologists to pronounced this as Kemet. But I think newer research has shown that it was actually pronounced more like Kumat. The same is shown in the scene between Daniel and Sha'uri, Daniel in general gets the consonants right but vowels is what needs to be figured out. Also, O'Neil's quote that "no one should ever have to outlive their own child". Well, as someone who has, I felt that.

I loved Spader's everyman nerdy lecturer solves-it-in-a-day character so much. But especially the lady that hires him, Swedish actress, Viveca Lindfors, who was also in Rob Reiner's The Sure Thing as a prof. She just has such gravitas. I hope you do 2012, it's just so much awesome cheesiness 😂

Boy, Jen!!! That was so much fun. One of my favorite movies, and I was surprised you'd not done it yet. What a treat! "Stargate" spawned a TV series (in which Colonel O'Neil became Colonel O"Neill [with two "L"s] and was portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson). One of his requirements for doing the role was that he could inject his own personal style of comedic sarcasm...in other words...much less stiff. Ran for ten, yes ten, years, befores spawning two other sequels. The TV series was extremely entertaining and had atypically fantastic music. David Arnold really drew you into the movie, didn't he! Fabulous music. Well, ya know how you wouldn't expect a TV series to have music on that level, but it did. Get this...familiar with one of the best film composers of all time, Jerry Goldsmith? Welp, a very close study to him, his son, Joel Goldsmith did the music to the TV series. You're busy out the wazoo, so I don't know if you'd ever have time, but, I will tell you, if you ever decided to do a TV series, you'd really enjoy the TV series, "Stargate SG-1."

Another movie of his : 2012. I watched this with my 5 years old niece and I told her it actually happened like that in 2012 and it was a documentary. And since then we rebuilt the world. The boat in the movie is even the same that we took to survive. Epic joke to make to a kid. Anyway the movie Stargate is pretty cool but the show is even better. Well not all episodes but a lot of them are really awesome.
