Disney's Snow White live action remake seems to get worse by the day, and many fans are angry over the changes Disney has made to the Snow White story and what Rachel Zegler has said about the Snow White character. And just a few weeks ago Jenna Ortega slammed Hollywood for how they write many modern female characters, so I've used the points she made about these poorly written characters to pick apart, the changed Disney has made to Snow White.

I'll never understand how people don't see the classic Disney princesses as strong women simply because they fall in love with a man. They are kind, empathetic, caring, hard-working, they fight for what is right, they stand up for themselves and the people they love. *That* is strength, *that* is what a role model should be.

Beautifully said. They try to turn the females into masculine figures, like women with their feminine qualities can't be strong. They have to act like dudes. It completely devalues innate feminine qualities. I always looked up to the Disney princesses. ❤

It's because they see femininity as a weakness, which is honestly a bit anti-female in itself. These fake "feminists" are more anti-feminist than they even realize. They think women have to have traditionally masculine qualities in order to be valid human beings. Nothing wrong with being masculine, but being feminine or not being physically strong doesn't mean you shouldn't be taken seriously or be liked.

I never once watched Snow White as a child and thought Snow was weak or “not a leader”…quite the opposite, actually. I saw her as being gentle, loving, caring while still brave and stern with what she believes. She literally taught young girls everywhere that vanity is not nearly as important as kindness. This new Snow White is just going to be annoying and insufferable.

I always thought Wendy from Peter pan was the best written female lead. She wasnt a kick ass warrior, but she was responsible and taught the lost boys that growing up is something to be embraced and not feared. She represented growth, responsibility and maturity. That actually made her the pivotal character, even more than Peter Pan himself. I'm speaking of the original, not the garbage remake they made.

Exactly! The make of a leader is not always in how they lead, but how they inspire others around them. It was Snow White's kindness that stopped the hunter from killing her and letting her flee. It was her kindness to the animals that caused them to trust her and help lead her to safety with the dwarves. It was her kindness that inspired the dwarves to fight for her. I always interpreted that as the real reason the mirror said she was the fairest in all the land. Her stepmother was always said to be fairest until Snow White started growing up. You could interpret that as a mirror calling a 14 year old more beautiful than a 30 year old (I'm guessing here) and using human beauty standards, or you could interpret the mirror as judging the person as a whole. Sure the Wicked Queen was beautiful, but she had a rotten soul and abused the child in her care our of jealousy. Meanwhile Snow White was growing up in horrid circumstances, yet chose to be kind to those around her. Thus making her a more beautiful soul, and giving her the title, "The fairest one of all."

@Styxswimmer
@Styxswimmer 10 ай бұрын
It does. The "strong female lead" is ALWAYS a female with a boat load of strengths and no weaknesses. They have no character arc beyond embracing how awesome they truly are. Look at star wars. Luke got his butt kicked and his arm cut off, and this makes him realize he isn't up to the task and must train. Rey on the other hand defeats her enemy (Kylo) in their first encounter. She never loses. You never get the feeling she's in any danger. Without flaws or shortcomings, they become cardboard cutouts that you can't empathize with and thereby don't care about

It makes me sad to see that in "modern times", the nourishing mother figure is seens as "weak and useless". The role of someone that sacrifices anything they have to make someone else grow and evolve is not only a great character trope, but also what many of our mothers and grandmas did, maybe because they didn't had other choice, maybe because they really liked it. Why would they not be represented? Why can't we see someone being strong not trough punches and swords, but by showing maturity, showing the world that no matter what it thows you, you can still learn to stand for yourself, while still being nice and welcoming? Just let women remember we have other kind of strenght other than the muscle manly one.

that's a nice story tho! Im glad it helped you with your confidence, but I dont think it's fair to say that being pale isn't a beauty standard for years. Dark skin women are seen as ugly, usually also in media. Of course a tan woman is different, Im sure this actrice fits the beauty standard easily (she is beautiful tho!). But 95% of beauty standards is white/pale. I dont think taking one princess away takes representation away, there is many other ones. Unfortunately not all races can say this

@@pepsiko5541 Depends on where you grow up. Pale isn't really the beauty standard in europe and america anymore, it's been tan white women for quite a while. I got made fun of growing up for my pale skin. Kids would always call me a ghost or a vampire and adults would constantly ask if I was sick and tell me to go out and get some sunlight. And sure changing one disney princess isn't going to take away all our representation, however, unlike other white disney princesses, snow white's pale skin is an integral part of her character. It's literally what she's named after, so her name doesn't make any sense now that they've changed her. It's a shame they couldn't stick to the original, regarding both the story and the casting.

Snow White is about innocence, hope and helping others who treat you kindly. It's not about a female leader character. It's about teaching kids and adults that hard work can be both fun and rewarding. Snow White is the exact opposite of the Evil Queen, the queen's vain, selfish, bitter and puts only herself first, and kills if she doesn't get her way. Snow White is loving, nurturing, joyful and sweet. Her beauty is both inside and outside making her the fairest of them all, I'm including the other Disney princesses too. I seen a KZbin video of the voice of the original snow white . A guy interviewed her in her little cottage. The cottage was full of snow white memorabilia and she was so happy to show him her collection and even talked to him in her snow white voice . She was humble and grateful for her role even though signing that contract with Walt meant he owned her voice and she couldn't audition for any other acting or singing roles . And her career in acting never got to take off . Her personality was the definition of what makes a woman strong and beautiful. Rachel has nothing over the original snow white and she will never compare to the original. Rachel will be long forgotten along with this silly non-essential woke culture its a blimp in our history . But the snow white from 70 years ago will continue to capture our little girls hearts the original snow white will live on in our memories she is iconic. And those feminist will never take our dreams of growing up to be a princess and meeting and falling in love with our prince charming and live happy ever after . It is so ironic that it actually makes me laugh at the idiots who put them together, who seem to be so ignorant that they can`t even see they write villains, but pose as heroes, but the audience sees through it. snow white was a nurturing character. the sweet, feminine, tender contrast to the dwarves. she got them to wash their hands before supper, like a mother does. cleaned their house, made it organized and put a warm meal on the table for them after their hard day at work. snow white is the epitome of a mother and a homemaker. i think that is the female strength that modern feminism is sweeping under the rug.

One of the most important things about this “strong female” character is that they do nothing wrong they are just a victim of everyone around them, and that is so true. As someone who likes to write myself, I know what it’s like to have a character who is only a victim and how difficult it is to break out of that mold, but professional writers shouldn’t stick to that mold. What creates good, relatable protagonist is making them morally gray. It’s making the audience care for them through the flaws.

as someone that came from a nightmarish home, I feel my husband did save me from it. I love snow white because she was never looking for a prince. but in her time of need when she thought everything was hopeless, he found her and pulled her from the dark that her family put her in. why can't we have a classic romance story without having this super strong single independent woman.

This!! They think that all women want to be the ""strong independent type"" and shun everyone who wants a more traditional life. They go against femininity whenever they can and this is so harmful, like imagine making a little girl feel bad for liking pink and wanting to be a princess? Ffs... (Very happy for you btw ^^)

The original movie does have her looking for a prince, since she sings that song. I can't think of an original fairytale where the girl looks for love. Nor are they looking to be rescued. The love comes to her because of her character. Concerning your husband...Congratulations! A good man is a blessing!

It’s weird because Snow White takes place in the past, where a woman’s main hope of security was through marriage. It makes complete sense in her context, and anyway, the Prince is almost an afterthought. Most of her time is spent on her magical adventure and then he saves the day. It’s so clearly a female fantasy (you’re so great and so hot that everyone is jealous of you/loves you). It’s one thing to modernize it, but this take has been done (poorly) by disney so many times it’s incredibly boring by now. Well, it will be interesting to see how they drop the ball.

@@krisxxn4756 Agree. Grimm Brothers recorded these in the 1700s, but the stories were hundreds of years old already. Society had very strict social levels. A person born as a peasant could only hope for better through magic. Typically, it is magic that saves the day in fairy tales, not a man. These fairy tales were told from peasant woman to younger peasant women. Nobility didn't really participate. The oldest Cinderella-type story dates back to 3 AD Egypt. The story has a Pharoah marrying a Greek slave & making her queen.

While I have mad respect for Jenna, Wednesday Addams is not supposed to be a Latina character. I don't think her being so in this current incarnation is a big deal, as what she brings to the character is nothing short of magnificent. As for representation, we have plenty of that, to the point that it is the rule. The only ones who care about race, are racist. The problem with Snow White being cast to a Latina, is that her whiteness is the number one physical descriptor of the character. She is the fairest of them all.

Actually, I quite liked the woman in Jungle Cruise. I think that sums her character up pretty well. She loved and supported her brother. She knew that sometimes, she needed a man's help, and she wasn't afraid to accept or ask for it. She was smart, and sassy, and slightly intimidating, but also brave and loving and nurturing and reassuring, and supportive. I said support twice. Oh, well. She did support really well, I thought.

This is why I like Katniss Everdeen. Even though she's somewhat different in the books than in the movies, it still shows her weaknesses, her being calculative due to the nature of her environment, the many wounds she gets because she's not a perfect fighter, and her resourcefulness. Her unwillingness to spearhead anything because she feels like she's not fit for it, is something I can relate to. While other people believe in me, I ALWAYS doubt myself. Of course, I can't relate to everything she's been through, but I understand that these make her stronger than many of the characters in the books. This is the kind of modern-day woman I want to see.

Snow White may not have physical, mental, or political strength. But she has *Emotional* strength. She has a nice and patient soul, allowing her to be loved by all, her kindness and empathy is what's needed from her. She's just a 14 year old girl who's feeling lonely, and wishing she had a lover that could hold her. But she's *not* crying in her room. She has multiple run ins with death. Befriends creatures of the forest, including 7 DWARVES lives in happy community AWAY from the evil Queen, her kind naivety gets her fooled like any other child, but luckily a handsome prince decides to 'respectfully kiss her corpse as a send off to the afterlife' which revives her, and she can ride off into the sunset having her dreams fulfilled. Not every one wants to rule the kingdom. Snow never aspired for that. Falling in love is a normal thing. It's not outdated or weak. LOVE is not weak. What is weak, is an empty girlboss for girlboss' sake. Snow White's issue wasn't taking down the tyrannical ruler to take her rightful place on the throne, that's Gira's job. Her 'purpose' was to survive assassination and dream like a 14 y/o should She can be a role model She can be a normal 'not aspiring for greatness' young girl. *Why can't she be both*

When you ask people who the “pillar” or “anchor” in their family is, it’s usually that grandmother or mother in the family who did stay at home. The “housewives” that we so devalue in our society for not bringing home a paycheck we’re also usually the individuals most focused on not only their family, but their community. As we lose that type of strong woman in society we are becoming more and more lonely, angry people yet are offended if you examine why. Woman are very powerful, but usually not in the same way as men. If men are swords and shields, women are the forges that produce those swords and shields and the welds that hold them together. We are equally strong in different but equally important ways and todays “strong female lead” is a woman who shows a more masculine expression of strength, often to the detriment of more feminine types of strength.

I feel a lot of main female roles back in the 80s and 90s, even early 2000s were written sooo much better than now. The best example that a lot of people will know is Ripely from the Aliens franchise. She showed emotion (cuz god forbid a woman actually cries in a film because doing so she's automatically "weak"). She stepped up when needed to even when scared shitless. She wasn't afraid to rely on others (men or women). She helped the opposite sex without belittling them to prove she was "better". She even got laid, because at the end of they day we are humans and we need that affection (since women now are all about "we don't need no man" BS). There are so many more females leads back then that were written just as well and people went to see the movie because it was actually good and didn't have some bs agenda. Write a good script with good characters and people can careless if it's a man or a woman. Write a crappy story line with crappy characters and the movie will tank. If any retired hollywood writers are seeing this, please come back and teach these newbies how it's done because I don't think I can take anymore of these type of female characters.

Jenna is smart and she sees the writing on the wall in Hollywood. She's even going at it with the showrunners of Wednesday trying to stay true to the character Wednesday. Jenna is fighting back against the same people who fought with Henry Cavill over his character. The woke mob is attempting to rewrite humanity as a whole making characters more flat and unrelatable and, in some cases, completely outside of the characters themselves just to push a message. It's becoming annoying and is making most of us seek other forms of media that are actually written well. Women and men should unite against this attack on us. This is a mockery of our humanity as a whole in media and we should no longer support it. Hollywood feels like a disgusting, slimy church where people go to worship woke culture and politics. It's turned into a disgusting soapbox of depravity that points at everyone calling them depraved projecting all of their faults onto the world around them. No one wants to get lectured by the biggest hypocrites in the world especially when they are going to the movies to get entertained. Hollywood is imploding. Jenna and others see it.

I think an example of a female leader that Disney actually did well is Mulan (the original, don’t get me wrong the live action ruined the heart of the movie) because, as he says in the video, she actually has to WORK to be heroic. She’s relatable because she’s not just “born perfect” she’s inspiring because she keeps her gentleness, kindness, and love for her family while pushing through real challenges to become the hero little girls can look up to.

Here’s the message they’re sending to children: Girls, you have to be absolutely perfect no matter what, and forget that falling in love crap. You need no one. Boys, you are completely worthless and a waste of skin. You’ll never have any worth. Show your kids the older stuff. Let boys have their super heros and girls have their princesses back. Teach them men and women are ment to work together and compliment one another. It’s sickening what Hollywood and Disney are trying to do right now.

Not going to be dreaming of true love, she says. She’s going to be “the leader she can be”. With that paradigm who is she planning to “lead”? Who is following her exactly? Where is she “leading” them if she doesn’t believe in true love-a misandrist utopia wrought with endless mental suffering. This girl is very immature if not straight up ignorant.

my first thought after hearing this was: what's wrong with dreaming about true love? why they treating it like something awful to do? not everyone has to be some sort of leader or fighter and that's perfectly fine and it doesnt make this person weak.

A good leader actually knows that he or she needs someone to continue what they have built. This is the issue we have with several characters but also in real life. Everyone should be doing what they want, thats fine, considering how many single working women we have that certainly aren`t happy you have to ask: What is wrong with love and family? It is easy to preach some political agenda if you are rich enough and good looking, so you propably get someone if you really want, but for the average person? If you miss the window of finding a partner, you might be lonely for the rest of your life.

Just because my dreams are different than yours doesn't mean they’re unimportant!”, Louisa May Alcott, Little Women. This is one thing I adore about little women, it doesn’t scorn the idea of making women have happening endings and romance. Women don’t always have to be strong, sometimes simplicity and the everyday tasks of motherhood are enough and it doesn’t make fun of that.

For a young woman Jenna is incredibly mature and intelligent. She sees right through all the sh$t and isn't afraid to make her point. Opposed to the people making these movies who are immature and infantile in their mentality. Ignorance, selfishness, bigotry, arrogance etc are NOT signs of strength, they are signs of weakness. Every female character now has these traits.

What sucks is that she says “she’s not dreaming of true love anymore” as if women don’t dream about being in love or have a type that they fawn over. She’s basically saying women don’t have a dream dude and that it’s wrong to dream of it, even in the 1930s

You, for some reason, cut the most telling point of Zegler's interview where she says 1937 with complete disdain and then laughs about it. I find it humorous and very telling. When Jenna Ortega calls out bad writing and ensures the character she is playing is true to the roll and the end work is better for it she is applauded. When Henry Cavill does this he is portrayed as an obsessed and crazed fan who is a disruption and is ruining the work of wonderful writers, even though anyone watching the show know that its success was his contributions and guiding the story back to the source material.

@@ema-db9ri I specifically remember article hit-pieces going after Henry shortly after he announced his departure from the show. They tried to make it seem he was obsessed and harassing the show runner. But funny enough, those articles never provided PROOF he actually create chaos on the set or made cast/crew uncomfortable. As for Jenna Ortega... actually, I recall HER receiving shit too. The writers of Wednesday weren't so happy when she mentioned in an interview how annoyed she was by some of the dialogue and the work she changed herself to make Wednesday more... Wednesday lol. Some overly sensitive writer prick got on her for that (taking offense that she called them out for their bad character writing lol). And then later, that same writer made a passive-aggressive bitchy comment about 'seeing her in the lines' (the Writer's Strike). It was pretty petty. In the end, it doesn't matter if you're a man or woman. If you're a geek who is passionate about the content you love, you are already perceived as a threat and target for egotistically driven assholes who got nothing to do but to self-project their self-esteem issues onto you. Crikes, it's like middle school all over again lol...

Sylvie from Loki is exactly this toxic girlboss type of character. Perfect, superior to all Lokis, everyone likes her as soon as she shows up, smug, no kindness, only punching. Why does stong female now mean no feelings no weaknesses no kindness? Its like Hollywood tells us these qualities are bad a weak trait! I think you nailed it with how you said these girlboss characters tell girls they dont have to work or get better or grow. Because thats not a good message for life. I noticed that already on social media. A girl posts an opinion. Someone disagrees, that person isnt necessarily rasist or sexist, they just see things differently. And the girl immediately insults them and blocks them. Problem solved. But this aint real life. In real life, you wont be perfect for everyone. You will encounter people that will dislike you, and they dont even have to have a reason. Thats just life. But these girl boss characters teach girls nowadays that if someone dislikes them or something they do, that makes that other person immediarely a villain and they dont have to include those people in their lives. I really dont know how these girls wanna go thru life, because they will have collegues or neighbours or sisters and brothers in law who will dislike them. What then? Will they refure to look at themsleves, admit they might be in a wrong, because these movies taught them that Im a girl and Im awesome authomaticaly and everyone is evil?

There have always been writers, directors, performers, putting their own spin on characters in movies. The woke take it to a whole new level. They can't resist going out on the promotional trail with the message "We're going to take this beloved character, and totally subvert our portrayal. Because we want to show just how unique we are, in our contempt for the character and the fans. It's almost a narcissistic *need* (no, *not* 'almost').

Honestly this actually spoke to me because I always thought these “modern strong female characters” came off as the quote on quote “pick me girls” who are like I’m so cool and badass I can’t be compared to any other girl. Witch… for real women in the world looking at that is unrealistic/not relatable. Most women I know who are strong in my life all have soft spots and back stories and ways about them where they struggle and are HUMAN. Removing that human quality and making these super women in every single movie makes them seem like goddesses/gods instead of real people or “an unattainable expectation of what women are and can be” so I agree 100% with Jenna Ortega on that basis. We learn this “othering” in art school where they create the idealized powerful women who are so disconnected from the human experience they are basically an idealized god who are superior to humans so instead of relating to them we just see another unattainable expectation of women.
