Hey Jenna!! Love watching your videos. So I'm a dental hygienist and unfortunately the smaller the breed of dog the more prone they are to periodontal disease which is what happens when gingivitis goes untreated. Gingivitis is reversible but periodontal disease is not. At that point the teeth lose attachment and become loose and fall out. I had my pets teeth cleaned once a year and put under anesthesia for it. They are also able to check for cavities or any other infections at that time. Skipping getting Matty's teeth cleaned because of fear of anesthesia could lead to serious health problems down the road. If you have any questions I'm sure your vet would be able to answer all them! Hope that helps!

My dog had the same thing so we tried the teeth cleaning treats but they didn't work. As time went on my dog had more of an attitude so we had to put him under and have his teeth clean and now he is fine and has healthy teeth.

I work at a vet clinic and a dental cleaning where your dog is put under general anaesthetic is the only way to really properly clean your dog's teeth. Your vet should do blood work before the procedure to make sure that he is healthy enough to undergo the anaesthetic and if he is then there really isn't much risk to a dental procedure. Once he has had his teeth professionally cleaned by a vet then you can brush his teeth every day to prevent plaque and tartar build up and consider putting him on a dental diet to keep his teeth and gums healthy. It is very common for small breed dogs to have dental issues and to need frequent dental cleanings so be prepared for him to need multiple dental cleanings done throughout his life. I have a 8 year old Havanese and I get his teeth cleaned every 1.5 years to make sure that he has good oral health.

Hancock Park Vet has anesthesia-free teeth cleaning-- they do the deep clean, but they don't anesthetize your dog. They just keep them very calm and comfortable. Recommend!

For mattys little teeth you can buy a spray from PetzLife that you just spray in his mouth and it dissolves plaque from their gumline and gives them fresh breath! Will get rid of the gingivitis too

For the gingivitis: what we did is, we got our dog's teeth cleaned once-- the whole shebang, sedation and everything, actual professional cleaning. And then we started brushing his teeth every day, right before bed, with this poultry flavored CET toothpaste. It's gotten to the point where my pretty puppy EXPECTS it and will whine if we don't brush his teeth. Since then, the vet says his teeth and gums look great, so he hasn't needed a cleaning.

Getting a dog a dental is completely normal. Very common. Recommended to do once a year. But if you really want something else get him nylabones. :-)

You have to put him under! As someone who works at an animal shelter, it's the real route to go. He will be fine, I promise. With not putting him under, they will just clean the surface and if your dog has terrible teeth, they will need to be put under. No reason you should be scared of it. If he needs it, then it's necessary 😊 .. do some google work and you will realize the same.

I've never noticed what they feed him. But, that can be a problem as well. I don't know if he just needs a bit of cleaning or like an actual dental. Dogs that young shouldn't have to get any teeth pulled. But, there are a lot more problems that could happen with him not going under vs him getting put under. We do dentals allllll the time and vets would never recommend anesthesia free dentals. He might be even fine if you just start brushing his teeth. ANYWAYS, talk with more professionals 😊
