2 Week Bunny Update

I will be on vacation next week and there will be no video, just reminding everyone again. Thanks for allowing me to show our process so far and how everything is going, I have gotten wonderful advice and reassurance from so many of you and I'm so so grateful to those of you normalizing this experience and giving us great things to keep working on that have helped you in the past. We have also had access to a lovely behavioralist on the phone named Bonnie that has helped with lots of our questions. We will be back in a couple of weeks and seriously thank all of you for your support while we go through these beginning stages with Bunny.

My favorite story ever - 49 dogs were rescued from the Michael Vick dogfighting ring. Because they were in really bad shape and trained to be aggressive, rescues thought most would have to be put down. In actuality, only two were put down, and only one due to aggression (the other one was put down because he was so injured). The other 47 lived long, happy lives, many of them in families with little children. A few were never reliable enough to live in homes, but they lived happy lives in dog sanctuaries. I think one was trained to visit nursing homes. You can find photos of one happily wearing a tutu. It took a lot of work, but dogs can definitely be rehabilitated.

Best Friends Animal Society created a lot of propaganda regarding those cash cows, and because of BFAS lies human fatalities caused by rescue dogs has increased 778 percent since the Vick dogs were confiscated and the pit bull initiatives propaganda campaign was created. Look into lawsuits against them. There are plenty.

As a dog trainer who works with rescues, I'm so pleased to hear you're using positive behaviour training. Don't even worry about crying. When my dogs get a knockback or training goes wrong (because it will) I will cry, and they're not even my dog. It's just so hard to see this animal that you love and are trying to help not realise that, and not realise that everything you're doing is just for their own good. As a current vet student and former vet tech, I thought the same thing! All this positive and encouraging fear-free training is exactly what we are taught in veterinary school from one of the best veterinary behaviorists in the country, and it makes me SO PROUD to see my favorite humans being such caring and responsible pet parents!! Bunny will have the most wonderful and loving home any rescue dog could ever dream of :) For the person who asked if Bunny is a bit skinny - all greyhounds (especially those in racing) are at their healthiest body condition when you can see some of their bony features, though I do personally think Bunny is a teeny tiniest bit more thin than I would like to see, even in a greyhound. I’m sure that once she starts to feel more comfortable and settled in her new life she will be perfect! If our original commenter is a veterinarian I would love to hear what they think as well, but from what I have been taught she appears to be a body condition of 3/9 versus the 3.5 or 4/9 that is preferred for greyhounds.

@@lauryn.00 greyhounds are naturally very lean dogs. Bunny is a touch under weight but not severely. The knobs of her spine and wings of her hips shouldn't be quite as pronounced as they are. However, even at her ideal BCS you will be able to see her hips, ribs, and spine. That assessment also come with a grain of salt because you can't truly assess BCS with out touching the animal.

I've never rooted so hard for a dog in my life- when bunny looked up at you after the 'drop it' command that was such a beautiful moment! Thank you so much for getting that break through on film- I hope that's done wonders in teaching people who follow you the importance of patient and compassionate training techniques! Breaking the instinct to resource guard in dogs is a little bit like teaching turn-taking in young children, and while people sometimes like to couch it in dominance and control, it really is about teaching good toy manners to a dog who hasn't learned them yet, and establishing trust just as you said that the toy isn't going to go away forever, and that she has nothing to fear of a human asking her to step away from something potentially harmful. Watching this really reminds me that even if Jenna isn't on KZbin, she's still going to be out there making the world a better place. I has a question about dogs xD My border collie pup isn't too food aggressive with people, but she is really aggressive with my other dogs... How would one help her overcome that? She had to "fight" with her brother and sisters for food, because they were just kept in one of those tin tubs, used for feeding cattle. We got over the food aggression with her normal food with people, but if we get any other treat, or another type of food and put it in her bowl, she is guarding it, and growls when someone gets close. With normal dog food, all it takes is another dog being within 5 feet of her pen and she mows the food and then barks and growls at the other dog. (I grammar well). But uh, I've been looking online for help, and nothing that has been recommended has helped.

My friend had a problem with her dog drinking the pool water and the vet told her that the reason why her dog is doing that is because she’s attracted to the noise the pool makes you can hear the water flowing so my friend got this little water fountain for dogs at the pet store and her dog hasn’t done it since...kinda odd but hey it worked 😂

It works so well because instinctively dogs know that clean water (in the wild) tends to have a rushing sound, if it flows it’s usually much cleaner then still water that harbors bacteria and insects. The filter’s in pools circulate the water to keep them clean, which happens to make a similar sound to a small stream or creek which is a great source of fresh clean water. However they don’t know that pools are treated have chlorinated or salt water to keep algae and bacteria at bay so dogs don’t realize its actually bad for them.
