I was definitely one of those people who didn't want to "waste" my supplies, I didn't experiment, I didn't color mix, I didn't try new things, and I was afraid to mess up a project. Once I realized that never using my supplies was truly the biggest waste I began experimenting, learning, and progressing super quick!

I really really enjoyed this exercise, so I decided to make myself an "easy button:" I used pencil to draw the 3 x 5 square pattern on one of those thin plastic cutting boards, then cut out the 15 little squares with an exacto knife. Now it works like a stencil! It will be easy to do 1-2 color charts every evening - can't wait to get started! :-)

I am just getting started at 67! I have been thrust into being Jacl of All trades just after I retired as my husband was diagnosed with cancer, and the a second cancer, and now while cancer free he has many complications due to his first surgery...so now, I am finally putting me in the front line and chose this art form, love that it "mixes with water" 😆 ! Just got my recommended brushes today and waiting on a palette pan and paper... I did order a set of clors and so am just going to begin filling in the chart that came with the set! I don't have favorites yet!

TIPS FOR A4 SHEET AND CM: A4 sheet is 28cmx21cm; split the sheet in four rectangles of 14cmx10.5cm. To obtain 3x5 (15) squares then proceed as follows: 1) split the biggest side of each rectangles (14 cm) with this sequence: 1cm-2cm-0.5cm-2cm-0.5cm-2cm-0.5cm-2cm-0.5cm-2cm-1cm; 2) split the smallest side of each rectangle (10.5cm) with this sequence: 1cm-2m-1cm-2m-1cm-2m-1.5cm. Use pencil HB to draw this scheme and then make it light with a kneadable eraser before proceeding with watercolor.

Fascinated by this and can't wait to make a start with umbers and reds. My favourite of yours is the sweet pea colours, opera rose with cobalt. Last week I dug out my daughter's old paints and was horrified to see what a mess she had left them in - spent ages cleaning them up ... now I feel a right nitwit! Especially as she went on to get a first class honours degree in fine art & I'm just her old mum starting out with your lessons for beginners! Lesson 1: Mess up your paints to look like you know what you're doing but treat your paintbrushes like priceless treasures :) Thank you for a really valuable tutorial, one which gives you something to hang on the wall too!

This is by far the best color chart method I've seen. Thanks Jenna! Love how it enables me to learn about values and color mixing potential of my paints all at once. I'm going to follow your suggestion and do this for all my colors. I loved how the color chart made tangible the meanings of a Color's Hue vs. Color Values; hear that sound? that's me smacking myself in the forehead! Also, I loved the colors you got by mixing Opera Rose and Scarlet Lake ; perfect shades for a Ruby throated humming bird -- it's makes me think of a Chinese red -- that sort of blaze red orange that I see in my mind & can now mix for myself! Oh man, I discovered a lot of fun colors :) I like some of the combos using Naples Yellow and Prussian Blue, Naples Yellow and Cerulean Blue, and during my "let's discover different orange shades using my different red and yellows" project, I really only discovered one orange, which is Lemon Yellow and Scarlet together. But there are lots of pretty colors on the page...just not many oranges ;) But hey, not a waste! Lots of other fun colors, like the mid tier of Lemon Yellow and Crimson Red. By the way, I'm a STRONG type A person...so I appreciate the organization of combining colors...and also find it somewhat relaxing, and I feel creative...even though I'm not really (and not artistic). Lol. Thanks for letting me join you in this journey, and for all your instruction! I've watched many of your videos.

My favourite colour was with the blues and yellow... I love green! Those greens were wonderful... The deeper greens in the patriarch out were so delightful to me... I got excited to try out what I have. I have Windsor and Newton 24 half pan set. I need to expand my paints, but yes, yes, yes, they are costly... But I am convinced the purchases will be well worth the expense. ... I have water colour pencils I will try out this way too...

What is it called when the colours separate when dried.. It's so pretty, I love that effect.

Hey Vanessa! So glad you enjoyed the video! Some pigments are granulating pigments and separate more easily than others, but as for a specific term, I'm not sure! Color separation? Haha! I don't know if there's a technical term for that. Maybe...??

Really good and informative video. I find this chart technique to be great help in future while creating a specific color in future drawings. Also seeing all those shades of colors was really pleasant to watch. Also these swatch practice is helpful with light colors as sometimes adding white to a color has proven disastrous for me in past. So that's a big pro that I see in this video. Video was excellent however I did miss the loose watercolor technique of yours where brush just glides over the paper to create a beautiful piece of art. Keep up the good work Jenna :D

Block rectangle or colour card are 3 inches across x 4 1/4 inches deep. Metric: squares are about 20mm with 3mm gaps. Rectangles are 66mm across x 112mm deep to the nearest easily measured amount 112mm is about 4 1/2 inches so works out just a little larger. It's easier to measure squares as 20mm rather than 18mm square. Less maths! Love the mixing concept. There are more options with a typical 12 colour sketching palette. Using postcards with a holepunch in one corner to tie them together with a tag is an easy organisation method. With a split primary palette alone is (I think!) 15 rectangles!

HELP!!! What pencil do you use for your grids? You are the most entertaining you-tube-artist-instructor! You have obviously studied art and are willing to share it, that's amazing! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am so excited to try out my new Daniel Smith 5 color set, that are coming today, and his 235 dots!!! What kind of a pencil should I use? What kind did you use in this video? I am scared to waste my first expensive paper!! Do you have a custom grid that makes the 3x5 grids or do you truly use a ruler? You are the best! Keep you goofy- confident personality- it makes your extreme talent fun and relatable!!!🤗🥰 please suggestions on my DS colors to blend...😊

Just finished a ten-set colour chart and yea verily it was fun and produced pretty results, learnt a lot. In addition to your eight sets I had room to do one lemon to viridian (some lovely cool greens resulted) and then went mad & tried lemon to royal purple! It produced some lovely rich browns and delicate sepias so well worth the experiment.

Loved this video-how fun! What do you do if you want to cover a big area with one of the low value swatches you made? Maybe that’s a silly question, but I’m trying to wrap my head around how you get a lot of one colour that you achieved by dipping your brush in water. Also, I’m new at this and finding out that I’m a type A painter. I’ve been watching videos and stressing out whenever I see an artist going from one colour to the next. I would just like everyone to stay in their own lane on the pallet. Also, everyone just mixes in wells that still have pigment on them from last time. Clearly I need to loosen up.

Loved the singing and dancing. Fun Fact did you know that 1 drop of water is exactlay 1cm wide on a dense surface. The metric system was invented by the Egyptians who knew this centuries ago not the french who claimed it centuries later. They also painted with Watercolors. The inch system was invented by the romans who divided the foot originally into 16 parts which they took from the greek but than later into 12. Thx for the Video I just bought your book and thought I check out the Channel. ;)

As a beginner, I love the color chart I created and refer to it a lot. I'd especially love to learn how to create lots of different shades of Green so I thought I'd create another study chart on the reverse side of this chart! If you were going to do a Color Study Chart for greens what colors would you experiment with besides, or in addition to the blues we have in this chart? Any help is appreciated bc paper is so expensive I'd love some guidance. Thanks
