There's no shame in that... it's a totally different arm angle and as a baseball player when you've never seen the angle and the spin it's very difficult to hit. No one's fastball is good enough to actually rise in baseball, not the case in the softball. Also this is like one of the greatest softball pitchers of all time.

That must be so bizarre for a major leaguer, to see a ball rise. When a ball is thrown from an overhand position, that’s physically impossible. Some major league pitchers make it look like it’s rising but it’s an optical illusion. But thrown from an underhand position, yeah, it’s possible.

laughing at all the people who say this is on purpose. true that softball players probably wouldn't hit baseballs either; the pitches are completely different and you have to change the direction of your usual swing. finch was pitching balls, because they're rise balls. their point is to look like a strike and then get out of range. because of physics, baseball players have never seen a rise ball. don't feel bad. 😂 less reaction time too probably caught him off guard.

Yeah I saw that video and thought it was funny. all he was doing was bunting, literally the easiest hit to put down.
@MST3Killa
@MST3Killa 7 жыл бұрын
he was sort of bunting, he was just poking at the balls one handed but he sure made contact easy enough. It's really just a recalibration of where the release point and flight pattern of the ball is. Anyone who legitimately thinks that major league batters simply "can't" hit fp softball pitches is just ignorant. Will they hit EVERY pitch... no. But neither do softball batters. Baseball players aren't hitting baseballs at 1.000. Only thing that I see as being a vast difference is the power needed to hit the home runs. Busch stadium is something like 335 ft to the poles and 400 to center. MLB parks have a minimum distance of 250 feet. meanwhile, fp softball for women is a maximum of 250 feet with most parks averaging out to 220. Obviously a softball does not travel as far or as fast as a baseball off the bat, but... I have to believe that MLB hitters can put it 250 feet with some level of consistency.

According to ESPN sports science, an MLB hitter has (about) 20% less time to react to this pitch in spite of the slower speed because of the shorter distance from Jenny to home plate. But when it comes down to it, he's just not used to it. Pujols is used to hitting 90ish mph fastballs from 60'6" away. He practices that. A lot.

She's pitching from only 38 feet. And the ball crosses the plate at a similar speed to a 95mph baseball pitch 👍 That's because baseball pitches lose a ton of speed from 60 feet, whereas her 38 feet pitches lose much less. That's why they're almost impossible to hit. She's basically throwing 95mph riseballs from 38 feet. Softball is a much lower scoring game, in general, because the pitchers are so hard to hit.

Is it harder to go from a longer distance baseball mound to plate than a short one. It looks like because softball is so much shorter, the ball trajectory and difficulty can escalate much quicker. No they werent. She was throwing low-RISE fast balls. They look like they are coming in at your knees, then rise. It's the exact opposite of a curve ball in baseballs. A curve balls drops...in softball, they rise because one is thrown underhanded and the other is thrown overhanded. She had one of the highest climbing low-rise pitches I've ever seen in softball. The damn thing looks like it's coming at your knees in the strike zone then it just rises like it's climbing a hill. The ball ends up chest or eyelevel when it finally comes in. Shit is insane when you're one in the batters box.

She's pitches over 70 mph underhand and she's at 43 feet away from the home plate. That's equivalent to over 95 mph baseball overhand pitching. Maybe use your head before talking. Plus her riseball is one of her best pitches. Most of her strikeouts come from her riseball because people can't lay off it. It looks like a strike because it starts off at strike level but jumps like 3 feet high in a split second. She's that good.

I think the reason that you don't see softball players hitting of of baseball pitchers that often is because most of us don't care about this made up rivalry between the sports. I know that I would strike out quickly for the same reason Pujols struck out here, because of the different look of overhand vs. Underhand.

The argument of softball having a less reaction time than baseball is assuming that you wait to react and swing at a pitch when it's thrown. Any ball player knows that you anticipate a strike to have you're heel down by a certain time. To keep this simple...if pujols just went up with the approach to make contact then he could probably hit the ball at least 250ft...which would be a homer in softball

to put this in context, albert is use to being pitched to from 60' 6". fastball pitchers throw from 45 feet. given that albert isn't use to that distance, it takes some getting use to. jen is really good, probably on of the best fastball pitchers in the u.s. she has a terrific advantage. give albert a pat on the back for trying and if he practiced for a while he would catch up.
@mikeholton9876

she's also throwing a larger ball 20 MPH slower than pitchers he faces in the majors, the difference isn't in the arrival time, the softball moves differently a pitcher like Jenny can move the ball in literally any direction, and the fatter laces and larger ball creates more deflection. what you dot see in this clip is the curve, slider or drop that she is equally adept at throwing. her slider is insane its like a righthanded Randy Johnson exploding slider. she didn't even need it to get Pujols, but if she faced him again she could really bend his knees if he tries to sit on the riser. i spent a lot of time around fast pitch softball, seen some phenomenal pitchers, she's legit dude. i mean she's seriously legit.

@@mikeholton9876 i played a lot of fastball as a kid and i was a pretty good hitter. couldn't hit a riser to save my life, so i know what you're talking about. i also played hardball and i could hit a baseball a lot easier than a fastball. you have to take it in context as well because i never hit a pitcher of this caliber. i have a picture of a guy on our team swinging at a drop pitch that literally bounced in front of home plate. i'm talking amateurs, i can't even imagine what would happen with a pro.
@AwakeningWarrior
@AwakeningWarrior 3 жыл бұрын
BS I played both baseball and softball, it's not that hard to hit both. It's easier to hit a baseball, but you don't need much practice to hit a softball after you've played baseball your whole life. Softball pitchers are fierce and you can do more with your pitches than you can with a baseball in terms of catching batters off guard. I love how everyone has excuses for why softball pitchers can strike out MLB players, though. Ohhhh girls aren't really *that* good, they're just two different sports so it's like, not that impressive. Nonsense. Softball is actually harder than baseball. I was pissed when I switched. With baseball, pitching was my main thing and when switching to softball I spent an entire season practicing just to be able to pitch in a game and never felt comfortable. The ball may be bigger and slower (ha not really though our pitchers were topping 75mph) but it's harder. Softball is harder. Baseball players don't know how easy they have it until they try to play softball. Most just cry their way back to their baseball field.

Distance, speed and size of the ball have little to do with it. The underarm motion in fastball is more natural and puts less stress on the arm. I once saw a fastball pitcher in a tournament pitch 21 innings on a Friday evening, 13 innings the next morning and 9 on Sunday with no ill effects. It is common to see a fastball pitcher pitch three or 4 complete games in a weekend tournament.
