I think abandoning the "production" aspect he mentioned last time has inspired and reinvigorated J-unit to make contents again :D He just wants to talk about the machines themselves, not sit on a computer d1cking around with editing and whatnot, and I don't blame him. Uncle Tony is the same way with most of his vijayos - one shot, maybe a quick edit here and there, and that's it. No fancy animated intro, music, etc... Just hit record and go.

I have A Cub Cadet lawn tractor with the Kohler Couage motor and it has had that tick or knock noise from Dat one when I shut it off. I took it back the first day I had it and the guy at Home Depot showed me 3 others and they all had that noise. I have owned it for 10 years and change the oil every 40 hours. It has 160 hours on it now and is going g strong. I enjoy the banter between u and Camera girl. God Bless U guys and keep those videos coming.

I want to start by saying I love these style of videos. I'd much rather have an abundance of smaller videos than one video that took many days to create about a single topic. I also would like to talk about the kholer courage! I worked at a lawnmower shop for about a year and I wouldn't consider myself an expert by any means but I personally don't hear anything out of the ordinary there. I've seen maybe 4 kholer Courage engines come through and each machine had close to 1k hours on it. If I remember correctly, those engines had a problem with the bolts on the oil pan coming out and causing the engine and pan to move separate of each other. I would just keep an eye out for oil leaking between those places and run it like it is. If anything, they are super simple to rebuild. There's no transmission to mess with. Anyways, good luck with your purchase and keep up the great videos. I've been a long time viewer and fan. You've taught me a lot. Thanks!

Super common on those courage engines to crack the whole jug off, engine bolts go loose and hit the flywheel cracking the case. They never used locktite on the hardware. I recommend you go over them!
@notajp20 күн бұрын
Yep, those are poorly designed. Common also to leak oil from the valve covers. The plastic cams fail. I’ve seen many of these come thru the shop with failures. Next to the Triad engine, this was Kohler’s worst engine design.
@GratefulBamboo21 күн бұрын
The mower could make that noise for years or two days and blow up. No metal in the oil and low hours are a good sign. Do not worry about it, just use it. Its not worth stressing over.

I work at a mower shop. When we get spindle housings with double sealed bearings I just pull the inner seal, you just use a soft drywall screw into the seal and pull on the scree. Even John Deere will source spindle housings with the wrong bearings and sell them with their 80% tax.

@reesewalker870821 күн бұрын
Sounds like the valves need adjusted. The reason they blow up is because the lower case bolts loosen, and the engine rattles itself apart until the case cracks.

@notajp20 күн бұрын
That’s just one of their issues…😂 Actually what breaks the case is that when the bolts back out, they catch on the spinning flywheel teeth and the force busts the case.

Welcome to MTD. Parts fit many many models. The LTX1040 from the factory had no grease zerks and sealed bearings but the spindle housing can be shared the upper teir models that had greasable spindles. Otherwise I had the same mower for 10 years and only changed the oil after the first season and had no issues with it. Couple of batteries and air filters though. The auto transmission is very light duty and it’s difficult to get the correct drive belt for it. If it’s a bit too large mower will operate slowly. Even the OEM replacement wasn’t as good as the original. I wouldn’t worry about the tick sounds like mine did.

@mikespain865519 күн бұрын
I have a small engine repair shop. The Kohler engines are good, but the Kohler Courage (especially the single cylinder) is a dog. It has several potential issues that can be a problem. Make sure the four engine mounting bolts are tight. Remove the plastic engine shroud and check all the sump bolts for tightness. They need to be torqued and Loctite applied. If they work loose they will damage the flywheel and crack the block. It is a bucket engine with sump cover on top instead of bottom. Also the starters can have issues. Also the valve covers will often leak next the exhaust is directly below the valve cover and cooks the gasket. It is a poorly designed engine. Cub Cadet is made by MTD and is a decent mower, nothing great but not terrible. 90 hours is low hours and you can expect 500-1000 hours if you do regular maintenance and take preventative steps such as checking the sump bolts for tightness. Hope this helps.

Replaced spindles on a similar Craftsman LT1000 and its the same story, sealed bearings with a grease fitting. No grease needed unless you want to make the next change out even more messy. What I did need was a fender washer (just like the ones used at the end of this video) between the pulley and bearing to raise the pulley to the right level after chewing up a brand new spindle and bearing when one pulley didn't line up with the others horizontally. Re-leveled spindles worked great all this year. I bought a carb kit and ended up using the original pintle because the new one made it run terrible. Dont know if a whole new carb would been better. The anti backfire thing on the bottom of the fuel bowl also gets buildup that can just be cleaned off. The headlights run off the magneto and are not direct from the battery which makes them dim or bright with the engine speed. Been trying to figure out a safe way to connect them to the battery directly without tapping into anything near the gas tank.

If you loosen the bottom clamps on the fork tubes to let it relax the top clamps should come off. The pressure is from the forks being twisted (from a crash) and I would fill that spindle full of grease to help keep water out. Water can get into the bearings even with the “seals” and it will help for future removal to keep rust out. Love your videos.

Yep I got one for free. Actually got paid $300 for selling them another one. The engine split in half. bolts all loosened up and it self destructed. I put a briggs twin on it. If you pull the flywheel and locktite all the bolts it will last longer. Also If you speed up the video a bit during the edit It will appear you are more exuberant without actually being. I watch it at 1.25 or 1.5 speed to speed things up anyway

Ive had an old husky from 03 with that same family of engine, I've done 1 head gasket, and a few valve covers gaskets on it, honestly it has ran great with over 600 hours on it mowing a 1 acre lawn, check valves and compression, could need a push rod, so far it has been a good mower, very common for cover to leak and will gas you out.

Great tip on the fork tubes. I have seen that trick in an old I believe it was a Yamaha service manual. As for the mower probably an exhaust leak. If you feel it could be something internal maybe go to a thicker oil. I run 10w40 motorcycle oil in an old John Deere 318 garden tractor I own. I have 2-318 from the 80s and they are super tough machines. Google their specs. Thanks for the videos.

The grease fitting is more for the shaft even if the bearings werent sealed you have to pack the bearing full of grease first, the grease squirted in there just cools it a bit, i would squirt some grease in there. The Cub Cadet is not that bad, what you got for 50 dollars is a good deal, nothing rusted out looks good, yes the courage has had its problems, what i heard is the standard KHOLER sound, noisy, they do not run as smooth as motorcycle engines. If you keep the oil changed and add a little Marvel Mystery oil to it, it will quiet down a bit. Dont over rev the engine and it will be fine. But i dont run engines at full speed i try to keep it around half throttle when mowing. Over revving the courage is bad it doesnt like that.

almost all spindles have sealed bearings and some even have grease nipples. Brand new OEM John Deere spindles are even like that. The theory is that people don't grease their spindles enough so sealed bearings will last longer. Yet people want to see that it the part is serviceable. Solution is to have sealed bearings with grease nipples. putting a bit of grease in there is still not a bad idea to keep moisture out.

The seal on the bearing is a simple dust cover that can easily be penetrated by grease under the pressure of a grease gun. The first time you grease a spindle, it will take a lot of grease to fill the cavity and push through the bearing. After that, just a pump or two every 25 hours or so for maintenance.
