I was six years old when my mom came and grabbed me and said they’re making a movie at Blocker’s Garage around the corner from our house on El Bosque rd. in Montecito... We witnessed the first scene in this movie where she drives up and talks to the actor playing the guy at the gas station ... Of course I was too young to know who the actress was or what it was all about but later on I managed to watch this movie and there are many scenes pictured the old Montecito that I grew up kind of fun to see that the house where it was filmed it’s right up the road where they pointed to and it’s one of my favourite old houses in Montecito and course things are different now but I have a lot of fun watching this movie yes there other things that show the Montecito store and Mount Carmel church and downtown Santa Barbara ..... Big fan of Ida Lupino and her quest to make socially relevant films and happy to have witnessed this little piece of movie history...

@@kathyhanes1905 Growing up in Montecito at that time was like growing up in Beaver‘s neighbourhood and I was the Beaver. The gas station is still there but doesn’t sell gas anymore it only does repairs for the rich folks that live there now as I said Oprah‘s house is just up the street . Strangely enough I now live about 8 miles south in Carpinteria.

I liked this movie, but Ida Lupino was truly a gifted actress and a gifted director. Her early films show what a petite, delicate beauty she was and remained so to the end. Ida and Howard were married, I think. I do love finding a movie I’ve never heard of or seen before. It’s unusual I never saw this on TCM and wonder why. I haven’t had TV for a while and appreciate the old black&white movies from any era.

Sooo many creepy red flags 🤔 ... The bottle of scotch in her groceries that she didn't order & happens to be Jim's fave brand (& later on the beers in her groceries he admits to ordering), the countless times he appears in her house uninvited, the way he stands close to intimidate her & playing with her cardigan which she is clearly uncomfortable with yet says nothing. And when he appears at the record store, etc.etc.etc! And his handwriting was the same as Jennifer's diary. The music & close dancing finally complete his creepy seduction of her. And in the end he says that she was sick & lonely like Jennifer but not anymore! What the?! It's true though, lonely people who were traumatised in childhood can be suckers for a smooth creep like him. Reminds me of the Stockholm Syndrome ... There can be a fine line between fear & desire. Anyway, that's my psychological analysis of it 😅

They had quite the tempestuous marriage. Howard was a good actor, but apparently didn’t have the charisma to make it at the top. He definitely had the charm with women and would have loved to have had a longer term relationship with Ava Gardner, I’ve read. Still it was Ida’s longest marriage and she was devastated at his death. Seems there are few happy endings in Hollywood.

This movie is "much ado about nothing!". It is a prime example of a "B" movie trying very hard to be an "A" movie with a strong cast/deep cinematography complete with shadows, and a spooky singing choir throughout this movie! The centerpiece for this movie is the combined effort of married couple Ida Lupino and Howard Duff. The script and opening dialogue is hilarious between the gas attendant and Agnes "are you planning to buy that house?" I don't know any gas attendant that would poke their noses into someone else's business, especially when you don't know them! Also, I would have been easy to have Howard Duff in tell Agnes right off the bat that JENNIFER WAS ALREADY DEAD INSTEAD OF WAITING TIL THE END OF THE MOVIE AS AGNES HERSELF IS GOING INSANE!". WEIRDNESS AT IT'S BEST! However, a paycheck is a paycheck!

summer rose The shadow that starts and ends this flick is a metaphor , it symbolyzes a mystery that exists only on people´s mind. The use of shilhouete shadow is very effective , it misleads people to think it is Jennifer hidden somewhere in the house , the ghost of this woman or something else. it has been used before , try to take a look at Giorgio de Chirico´s paintings to understand the effect they have on your mind.

Can't go wrong when directed by James Wong Howe! Not to mention Ms. Lupino.👌

I thought this movie would certainly be a good movie with Ida Lupino and Howard Duff in it. Boy was I wrong. It's a real dud.

I liked it, it was really atmospheric. Thanks for uploading! Spoilers & Questions So was he just gaslighting her and Jennifer was really in a sanatorium the whole time, did he knew about that before? Or was she killed? Who's shadow is it, the creepy gardener's maybe? Agnes surely wasn't crazy and was clearly just reacting to the suspicious behaviour and the things she found. She could have simply mistaken the face for Jennifer's in her fear. None of this makes me think she was losing her mind. Didn't that note say 'furnace', personally I think that maybe he led her there to see if she actually knew the truth and would have killed her if she had. He led her there without being shown and without the note. The owner of the house doesn't seem bothered when Jennifer is mentioned to her when she'd have known at that point what had happened (if the sanatorium story were true). Maybe they didn't kill her, just drove her insane or forcefully committed her (no one would believe her blackmail then) and left her to die in the asylum.

Why is it that flashlights in old spooky houses always have weak batteries.. and the creepy mirrors.. deliciosly scary in B&W.

I'm still wondering why the college kid, who looks older than the age he played, was rummaging through the desk of his boss and what he found. The music was a bit melodramatic. Love Ida Lupino, but this movie was a bad one; not even close to "The Hitchhiker" which she directed.

Reads in the diary "oiled the sewing machine" cue the ominous music. What an odd film. Who keeps a diary for such mundane things?

I really enjoyed this. Ida Lupino is great but I think the real star of the show was the house. It was such a big empty place, with every sound reverberating. Unlike some I liked the music, it set up my expectations for something grim or even supernatural... so much like Agnes I let my imagination go wild. The ending is just a touch anti-climactic, though I like the shadow... which left things just a touch open-ended. Agnes had thought someone was in the house. And for a 'what if'... what if, at the very end, the camera had panned up and revealed the shadow to be the owner, just finished getting Jennifer's body out of the boiler room... suggesting Howard Duff was lying all along and taking Ida off to be murdered in the woods?

The 50’s overdid the music so often and the 60’s did jazz too much. It’s interesting how you can tell the decade of movies from the sound track.

Ended very quickly with everything apparently explained, but for that shadow. Who is it? My guess is that it is a 'presence', perhaps of the house itself, and had something to do with 'Jennifer' going mad and Agnes came very close too. A hint of the movie Black Narcissus in this.

Ida Lupino came from a family of classic actors. Her anglicized last name would be "Wolf." She and husband Howard Duff formed their own mopix company at some point. Didn't look this up. But maybe this was one of them.

Never understood what Ida saw in Duff. He wasn't much acclaimed as an actor, and seemed to have little to lay on the table? Maybe I'm just insanely jealous? Glad she finally dumped him!
