Comedy-horror Jennifer’s Body, starring Megan Fox, is a case study in how camera framing, subversive writing, and self-aware characters can bring a female point of view to an overwhelmingly male genre. Yet when the film premiered it was met with negative reviews from audiences and critics alike. Director Karyn Kusama and screenwriter Diablo Cody hoped the film would appeal to teenage girls, but the studio insisted on marketing Fox’s sex appeal to men, a strategy that garnered misogynistic reviews.
Then, over the years, Jennifer’s Body quietly became a cult classic, loved by fans of genre films and gaining public praise for addressing predatory male behavior long before this was reckoned with in the mainstream. Jennifer’s Body cemented its place in feminist horror by reclaiming the revenge story formula for women, to focus less on what’s done to them and more about what they feel as they navigate a world that doesn’t always value them.

Seriously, I honestly never knew why people hated on her, aside from thinking she was dumb. She never came off as silly or anything in actual interviews. Shoot, one of the highlights for me in those terrible Transformers movies (god, aside from Bumblebee they all actually really suck in hindsight), was the fact that she was a gearhead and had actual agency and wasn't a damsel in distress. If anything, she was the one saving Shia LeBeouf half the time; she was his plot armor. Was she attractive? Oh, absolutely...and still is. But nowadays we hear about Joss Whedon being a toxic director to women (to be clear, we heard it from half of the Buffy and Angel casts, just for some reason no one ever believed them >.>) and we all know Micheal Bay is actually a hack who is really good at exploiting explosions and "flash" over substance (and also kind of a raging dick to everyone on a movie with him, so I've heard). Also, was I seriously the only guy out there that thought (a) "Jennifer's Body" was a pretty good dark comedy horror movie and (b) that the real villians of the story were all the "nice" guys she killed and were sacrificed by? I mean guys...it's called "Jennifer's Body"...that fact alone should have made you see that it was about more than "Megan Fox as a demon killing boys". The fact that it focuses on her "body" and makes that the primary thing any of the guys like about her should have clued us ALL in.

Megan fox is literally getting an apology for what was done to her just for being a woman in Hollywood and I think that really speaks volumes about how we punish woman for being human and not objects. Fairly certain that her going above and beyond to sound edgy in her interviews and public appearances back then, and mistaking this for being outspoken and honest, had more to do with her never being more than a flavor of the week than the fact that she happens to be female. @Exiest_Osas Saso 1. I'm not a teen. I'm 26. 2. The movie is called Jennifer's Body for a reason. All of the boys and men in that movie only saw Jennifer for her body. Not her as a person. The band sacrificed her because they thought her body was a virgin. The boys at her school only wanted to have sex her, again because of her body. 3. She's a demon. A predator. A succubus, a demon historically known to prey on men. Do you expect a man-eating demon to devour females instead? 4. If misandry is all you took from the movie then you completely missed the point of the movie.

The Promiscuous Girl who's murdered as 'punishment' for her sexual activity is something I've always despised. To portray that women can't act on their desire without a horrific end is vile and cruel. That's why I hate the movies that portray this misogynistic character trope again and again and again. @@lostinthestorywithjeremymi9385 the promiscuous girl trope is less misogynistic and more a reflection of real life, granted they don't usually end up getting killed. Promiscuous women in general end up on ssri(anti-depressants), alcoholics, and unable to form/maintain healthy, long term relationships due to forming multiple attachments to different men. While there's nothing wrong with a woman acting on her sexual desires, she must also not be reckless in doing so. While promiscuity is bad for both genders, it's almost always much worse on women due to biological differences. Nothing good comes from that lifestyle.

It's great that society wants to rid itself of such a plague. I don't agree with them being "lesser people" but I understand the general idea. "....shouldn't lead to them being unhappy." Don't know where you're from, but I'm from America. A lot of the women here follow the "Sexual liberation" orthodoxy and are INCREDIBLY unhappy. Women are more free now than they've ever been in history, but also more unhappy than they've ever been as well. It's as if feminism backfired on women. Again, nothing good comes from promiscuity.

Megan fox is my idea of feminism. It should be supporting womens voices and minds and opinions. She has the right to be sexy without being silenced or made to appear that he voice doesn't have value. The worst thing a woman can do is criticise other women for being sexy, feminine, gentle etc... all the qualities that make women femme. If we just encourage women to have masculine qualities and call it "strong" we're just amplifying the problem which is that femininity is seen as weakness. Be strong, by being kind and forgiving, tenacious, supporting yourself and supporting other women.

Because the movie initially bombed, I'm not surprised, but since it's gained status and traction over the years, it would be nice to see more on this. With adolescent girls, especially when there’s a social power imbalance where one is more conventionally beautiful/popular and the other isn’t, close friendships can be extremely intense. Women aren’t allowed to express anger, jealousy or negative emotions and we’re taught to blame/hate other girls rather than a patriarchal system so we’re often forced to repress and resent which allows toxic patterns of frenemyship that expresses itself in every way, sexually, emotionally, subconsciously, but openly. The male gaze also goes both ways. Some social second class besties have, alongside their male age mates, idolized their toxic popular BFF to such inhuman sexual levels they no longer see them as normal people. They’re so desperate to be them they think they want to fuck them cause it’s the only way they think they can relate to them or come close enough to become like them.

Even though we initially went to shit on it, I feel really lucky to have seen it during the original theatrical release, I'm glad my friend and I were able to change our minds and really enjoy it, we love showing it to new people and I hope it gets another theatrical release so people can enjoy it the way it was originally meant to be enjoyed in theaters. 10:34 not even just two women. It damaged the lives of all the mothers who’s sons died. I noticed while watching that the only people we ever really got to see deeply mourn, as in full out crying in agony, were women. The mothers of the boys, the girl in the hallway after the fire, needy herself. Yes the male teacher and the first boy Jennifer killed cried too, but not with the same heart wrenching screams of agony as we saw from the women. The message that the violence against one woman reached out to affect the lives of so many women was a painful reflection of the way the fear of violence against women reverberates through entire generations of women. There isn’t a single person raised as a girl that I know, including myself, that doesn’t have that same fear.

Meanwhile, horror has been telling meaningful stories since its inception and is one of the few genres that has remained popular from the inception of the film medium through present day. People are only capable of recognizing certain horror films as "elevated" are simply failing to analyze the rest of horror films, and that's a fault of the critic and not the medium.

I loved that film and there are multiple levels it can be interpreted on but this video was also a pretty great take on it.
@diabloakland
@diabloakland 2 жыл бұрын
The flaw in that is teenage girls do not sexualize themselves, they are often sexualized by society, pressure, patriarchy and them em surrounding them at a much much younger age. They are in fact victims of this, i know i was. The fact that your boyfriend didn’t acknowledge that and dismissed it, respectfully, shows that most men don’t notice out of ignorance and benefit or turn a blind eye to it. It’s very much a deep thing.

Your boyfriend is definitely wrong, you were right about seeing hidden meanings and the movie *is* deep. However, saying that teenage girls are given power through their looks basically comes back to the male gaze: you're viewing teenage girls as receivers and not makers. I think Netflix's Fear Street trilogy definitely fits into the "horror through a female gaze/feminist perspective" category. It not only passes the Bechdel test, it blows right past it and breaks the sound barrier. The characters, even those who die, feel really fleshed out and humanized. There is a lot of bisexual lighting, the relationship at the heart of the movie is between two girls, and even the (brief) sex scenes are filmed in such a way that it doesn't feel exploitative or male gaze-y. Aside from the great dialogue, layered story-telling, and awesome soundtrack, I think these movies are great simply because it clearly demonstrates that you can make horror films that are scary but also are not reductive or simply excuses for displaying violence against women. I would really love to see the Take analyze this trilogy!

Excellent explanation of the film. I’m so happy Megan Fox is back and this time she’s allowed to be her. She’s strong. She’s sexy. She’s a mam. She’s sexually active in a positive way. She’s cleaver. She’s tough. She endured so much hate and still stuck to her beliefs and her morals. She never caved and she’s come through it looking even more like a goddess. I always felt like she was used by the industry and it’s clear she was. Good on her for all she’s done. Shine bright and never dull it down for anyone. X

14:32 I disagree. I think Chip's skepticism was reasonable here since he saw nothing to prove it. He didn't call her hysterical or delusional. He said he believes her but it'd be weird if he just blindly believes the story. Similar to any character who professes having seen something supernatural.

I'm a woman that was 19 in 2009, saw this movie in theaters, & LOVEDDD it 😄.... i'm bisexual so maybe that's why the "straight male" oriented mkting of this horror comedy got my attention, but the content & storyline is what made me love it - it was ironic, funny, smart, spooky, sad & there were messages criticizing misogyny in life and art 🖤🖤🖤 that movie was a good one👍👍 but i remember a lot of people dissing it as if the whole thing was terrible. Fucking sad really. Subconscious, systemic misogyny at work 🤣 No wonder more people didn't like it! Many an insecure, dullard sheep out here.

So I was confused and it block me to see beyond a stupid sexy movie for little men at some extent. So sad the studio was so blind but kind of ironic that in an attempt to make more money by trying to be empty mainstream, they totally missed the point and cause the flop of this film. I just remember I thought it was a fail attempt to copy Teeth. But even if they are at some level in the same topic, they are totally different movies with completely different approach and genre.

I love this movie so much. I'm often flummoxed by most studio's willingness to completely ignore or disregard half of the population & their buying power. They regard women & teen girls as less worthy of catering to. Due to this complete disregard they are missing out on a staggering amount of profit they would otherwise get if they included women & teen girls as a demographic worth catering to. Women tend to make most of the financial decisions for their families so the overwhelmingly male CEOs of these studios are doing their companies a huge disservice by doing this nonsense.
