Euphoria’s Cassie Howard reminds us how far we haven’t come when it comes to slut-shaming. The show is the most tweeted about of the decade, and a massive chunk of these tweets are takedowns of Cassie. What’s truly revealing is how Cassie's friends (and the audience) treat her, and the damaging effect this has.

I have noticed that - while The Take is incredibly supportive of sexuality and sexual content - a line here and there have stood out to me as almost shaming people for not being sexual enough, of being prudish. This can sting a bit; I'm an Ace person. A lot of us face a lot of judgement for not being "sexual enough" to "function as people". I believe The Take as the best of intentions, but this was the impact. Perhaps I'm not alone in feeling this way. It would mean a lot to me (and probably other Ace folks) if you could check just a bit more than your scripts don't repeat that bias. Sex positivity means not judging sexuality or the absence thereof.

Only because he almost beat a man to death for (consesually) sleaping with Maddy - while they where brokwn up mind you, threatened him with r*pe allocations if he spoke up about it, strangoled maddy that one time, catfished Jules as Tyler, treatened Julles with the nudes she send him at his request as Tyler with pornography charges, used those nudes to blackmale Julles into giving a false confesion to the police about the night of the strangling, forsed the guy he beat up to take the fall for said strangoling saing that he is planing on pining him for it anyway so he just should turn himself in and when Fez kindly asked him to lay off Ru and Jules, Nate called the cops on him and caused a death (to be fair, the kid shouldnt have been there to begine with, so that is kind of on Fez as well). All season 1 and I sure he does more moving on. At this point, sleaping with a best friends ex is small potatos and I kind of saw it comming. Unfortunatly, Cassy only has this as a bad thing she did so people are getting mad at her

I love cassies character. Maybe I haven't seen a lot of movies but I haven't seen a lot of characters with mental problems depicted like she is. Like it's either the sweet anxious/depressed girl or the completely crazy one that's practically a joke. It's good to see a character who's spiralling deeper and deeper beyond help, hurting people around her, unable to break out of her habits even when she wants to. I've had depression too and been there, I want her to get better next season of course but it's sill kind of validating to watch? Weirdly enough. Honestly, I think that all this hate for Cassie is really messy and toxic... The main message of the show is literally " we all make bad decision, but nonetheless we're able to improve ourself. We should be less judicious towards others and ourself". But most people apply this message on everyone but Cassie. We all know Cassie has her fair share of mistakes, but its so overlooked that Nate is a manipulative person, not just with Maddy. We should remember that Cassie was deeply depressed and fragile, she felt empty and lonely, i personally think that Nate took advantage of her vulnerability to forget his feelings. I cant understand how so many people underestimate his influence on Cassie while Maddy has INCRIMINATED an INNOCENT person only to protect Nate. Also, i found the Lesley's play down straight cruel and humiliating to Cassie, because for me it was done with no particular moral intent, but mostly with envy. This is pure slutshaming for me. I think that season 2 was too ipocrite with the initial message and i hate the way Cassie has been represented. The narrative is really too ambiguous with her, because it begans to make her look like a ridiculous villain instead of a more real and complex character. We have all forgive Rue, even though she had ruined her family's life, she used to be manipulative and a liar, because she was obviously hurt. And likewise happens with every other characters. That comment on how Cassie has only been praised for her looks, made me think about how her ice skating must have meant even more to her. Because it was something that she enjoyed and was praised for outside of her looks, she was getting positive reinforcement because of her hard work. So, when her dad takes that away, it was like taking any chance for her self-esteem to grow outside of her looks.

So that means that Cassie would have been the perfect skater but most skater strugle with eating disorders and the standard to be thin tk be ablr to jumps and spin faster, so nope that would have been hell for Cassie too.

What doesn't sit right with me is how Cassie makes several cries for help and how neither Lexi nor their mom bat an eye and rather act annoyed and inconvenienced by her breakdowns, as if her pain is a burden. Just because Lexi adjusted to the family issues in less destructive ways doesn't make a difference because it is no child's fault and they are fair to be dysfunctional because of mistakes their parents made. She is a teenager and still has A LOT to figure out, just like every other teenager. After screaming in her face for breaking down and being depressed, her mother and Lexi having the nerve to put on that play and justify it is just disgusting to me.

I just think that Cassie is basically another victim of Nate. And it's so frustrating that many people can't see it. Nate is an abuser not only psychologically but physically as shown in season 1. And he is doing the usual abuser tactics: first, have sex with her and throwes her a love bomb telling her he likes her and so on, then he ignores her and finally traps her. His objective is to slowly pray around all of Maddie's life so then he can mess with her head and get her back eventually. He of course does all of this subconsciously , but Maddy is his definitive pray. And it is very obvious when Cassie storms out of Nate's bedroom and then he tells her he loves her when she is on the stairs. He is the ultimate villain here confusing women to pray on them and use them. He is the abuser.
@mermaidtingzzz

Literally everyone sees that she’s another one of his victims. Cassie is the only one that doesn’t seem to think so. She seems to be willing to ignore the same red flags she saw when it came to Maddy and Nate, only because now its helping her fill a void. Mind you she didn’t cry all season bc she was Nate’s victim, she cried because she didn’t want to be held accountable for her actions and decisions. Nate comes from a whole abusive household. If she’s getting sympathy he deserves it too. Knowing what makes someone tick doesn’t mean they can’t or should be held accountable.

I don't want to excuse Cassie for what she did, but people seem to be so desensitized with Nate and think he's only doing what's expected of him that they end up forgetting that he's the biggest problem here. Realistically, I would react the same way Maddie did, because Cassie broke her trust and if someone you bonded with so much just broke your trust and got with your ex-ABUSIVE boyfriend, that would deeply hurt you, but Nate needs to take responsibility for his actions as well, not just Cassie. He ain't even facing any consequences despite being so much of a jack-ass. He only got beaten once meanwhile Cassie always needs to take blame even before this entire incident. Plus, people seem to forget about Cassie's passion for ice skating. Instead of making season 2 about her trying to find herself after all the heartbreak, regaining her love for ice skating and pursuing it. I know that putting her together with Nate creates more drama, making it more interesting to viewers and that's what they want, but it's also kinda demeaning to Cassie as a person. I'm being way too invested but like I'm just kinda sad, I wanted Cassie to grow but her world only fell apart, and yes she did questionable things in the past, I don't excuse any of her wrongdoings but the point is wanting to see her grow and since she's literally just a character so I believe they could have molded her differently. Also like someone said, her true love doesn't have to be a man, it could be anyone, it doesn't have to be romantic. As long as it helps her grow and uplifts her, helps her become a better person, then that's who you can consider her true love. It's so sad to see Maddie and Cassie pitted against each other; "Bitch you're my soulmate"😭😭😭

One thing that isn’t often mentioned is that Cassie is also inherently lonely in her beauty. Since everyone around her puts her on a pedestal, people don’t even really see her as a whole complete person. And not even her *sister* (the person she *should* be able to love and relate to and confide in the most) sees her as a whole person because Lexi is jealous of Cassie’s looks, and is happy to hurt her own sister. They both have trauma from their father leaving them, and that absolutely plays into Cassie’s behavior, but instead of having an ally in her sister, Cassie just has an enemy. Lexi is all too happy to hurt and embarrass her sister publicly. This leaves Cassie complete and utterly alone in her struggle. Cassie has nobody to confide in. Everyone is gleefully happy to hate her. Nobody loves her. And she knows it. 💔

So why people can't even try to empathize a little with what Cassie is going through? This seems kinda misogyny to me...ops

Not to mention the way men sexualize her body and see her as object. Think about how her sex tape got released on 1st season, how mckay first idea of wanting to be with her was "youre the most beautiful women ive ever seen", and how he was made fun of by nate to be dating a "whore". which led mckay to even choke her w/o consent thinking she is liking it. guys think she likes to be treated like that just because is open sexual. which leds cassie into thinking that this is how women are treated, that this is normal relationships, because this is the only way she is treated. being pretty, having a sexualized body (big brests) is sometimes a curse

This is a braindead take, it is comically obvious that Nate is someone who can't change and has no interest in ever changing. But Cassie logically should be the one to change, but also has the capacity to change. You have to remember she PICKED Nate, she saw Nate and the results of his abuse to Maddie and went "Yeah that's the perfect man for me right there". Blaming Nate for anything is fruitless, its useless to blame Nate because his character automatically makes any failures associated with him, his fault. It is much more worthwhile to blame Cassie as she can and should actually learn and grow.

Can we talk about how different Cassie and Lexi reacted to their dad’s abandonment?! Cassie was obviously “daddy’s little girl”, but we have no idea how Lexi was treated as a young child. All the main cast had their own dedicated flashback to childhood to explain part of their personalities and problems episode…except Lexi. She was on the periphery of Cassie’s episode, but in her deeper dive episode in season 2 And flashback during the play, it doesn’t show her actual young childhood. Was she mom’s favorite? She’s always been in the shadow of Cassie because she’s beautiful, but did their parents neglect Lexi? Do we categorize this under “the golden child and the scapegoat?”

I was the "Maddy" in a situation almost identical to this years ago, and my "Cassie" and I are friends again (after a year of cutting off contact with her, then reaching out myself). And it was insane watching this season because my "Cassie" is almost identical to the character; sexualized at a young age, neglectful/absent father, almost hyperromantic as a result, etc. It doesn't excuse her actions (not by a long shot, she had to own it and apologize), but these things informed her behavior throughout her most formative years. And it took getting kicked out of our close friend group and being on her own for a year (without the guy) that finally gave her the chance to introspect and begin to heal. Cassie is not irredeemable, and right now she feels like she is. This is the first time that she's done something actively and unjustifiably bad; she's feeling the fallout, the loss of her friends, the judgment from her family, the stress and humiliation and the shame. She can't take back what she did to Maddy (and Maddy is not obligated to forgive her or make space for Cassie in her life), so she feels like it would be useless to apologize, especially since what she did was not an accident. She can choose to own it, grow from it, and never let it happen again, but that will take time. And I think the audience wanted her to apologize to Maddy right away. But she has not grown enough to truly understand the depth of the hurt she caused, so any apology from her would've been defensive and desperate, not genuinely earned. At the end of the day, I just can't see Cassie as anything other than a teenage girl who is learning what it feels like to undeniably and actively wrong someone who loves you. And it does suck that expressing empathy for her gets translated into supporting her actions, since the act of unjustifiably hurting someone who has never hurt you (in some capacity) is such a bitterly relatable and human experience.

Did she come clean and break it off with your boyfriend? What made you decide to reach out to her again, after rightfully cutting her off? Also, how has this affected your current relationship. Do you have boundaries, (like she can't meet your future boyfriends, or you no longer important/intimate share things with her) or are things back to the way they used to be. Has she taken any steps to earn your trust again? Sorry for all the questions, but as someone who takes trust very seriously, I don't think I would be able to be friends with someone who betrayed me like this unless they did something miracle to make it up to me.

I’ve never been in your shoes (I’m so sorry that happened) but I’ve definitely seen a few of my friends go through this. That’s the best part of what euphoria explores and one of the most complicated parts of being a teen: for the first time you have the opportunity to make some more adult decisions, and for the first time you see how your childhood and development impact who you are and the choice you make. And then you have to make the choice to change your nature.

Wow more people should read this, because it shines a light on real life situations, you don't have to excuse the behavior but you don't have to be mean either. In the show Maddy, Kat, Lexi, Jules, Rue, everyone specially Nate have done bad things some are actual crimes and people over social media is outraged because an underage girl broke the "girl code" come on! Specially if people can feel bad for Maddy without condemning her actions and without holding her accountable for her wrongdoings, for the ones that defend Nate because he's a victim that has gone through trauma, it's hard to understand why they're so upset about Cassie.

Yes. I had the same thing happen to me as well. It’s the same situation where she has been my friend since kindergarten and the guy was a bit like Nate. They got together right after we broke up and I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t even mad. I was WORRIED about her. For me, there was nothing to forgive. Some dumbass guy isn’t worth me dumping my friend over. To be fair, no lying was involved but it was something that would have made a lot of people angry. We’re still friends and she is not with that guy anymore, thankfully.

Oh yeah, I still think she's underrated... I think because her character centric episode was at the end of the first season, people didn't feel as much for her during the season. But with season 2, that's out of the way, and she's got more screen time this time around which gave her a chance to show her range. People are just pre-occupied with hating Cassie that they're overlooking the performance.

I think she's hated because nowadays as we finally get away from female characters that are only a pair of boobs on legs, and towards female characters that are strong and stand up for themselves, we forget that there are also women like Cassie who aren't strong, who are fragile and hurt and who make bad decisions sometimes. She's portrayed like a real girl and not like a character on a TV show. I think we all agree Euphoria does a great job of having complex, realistic characters all-around. I've known a couple girls like Cassie in my life, and what bothers people is that she's not an archetype they want to see on TV. Maybe they feel like she's bringing the feminist movement down, but isn't feminism supposed to be about supporting women, and not just the ones you handpick because they represent something you like/that is like you? I love Cassie. I hope she gets help and makes up with Maddie.

Exactly it's always the feminists who like to pit girls against eachother because "one is better than the other" when tbh we are pretty much all the same I thought sisterhood was including all girls and not just excluding women you think are supporting patriarchal beliefs. "Oh she cant be here because she's a wh*re" is sexist and demeaning. Women who do that are mysognistic themselves. They are not a girls girl.

And I don't really mind the ppl who are angry with her, ppl aren't supposed to accommodate u just becuz you're mentally ill. U hv to clean up ur own shiet. And I like how even her family doesn't like her, like that's very real, you really can't expect anything when you're unstable. tbh

Lexie's play was brutal. It was basically a stage performance of a "burn book". Granted, Lexie has been overshadowed by her sister but she is better off because she isn't under pressure. Being in a perpetual spotlight, Cassie feels an expectation of perfection. As perfect as she tries to be, the men in her life constantly disappoint. Nate told Cassie that she didn't realise the power she has. That is true. Maddie has power and knows how to use it. Cassie is totally submissive which sets her up for disappointment and the feeling of powerlessness. The scene of Cassie on the carousel was extremely humiliating but in spite of that, it is a scene that shows that Cassie can find what she needs when she relies on herself. That just wasn't the proper venue to make that discovery. Cassie's appearance should be an asset but not the only thing that defines her

Aswell as her father abandoning the family, she’s been exploited by a lot of her exes sexually and online - that kind of circumstance has traumatised some victims so much that they died by suicide soon after a video of them was leaked :( And I’m not sure if the show acknowledges or handles that in a sensitive or mature way. It was spoken by Demi's rehab counselor: "So many people look at someone who relapses and think 'omg how could you do that?!' when instead they should be thinking 'wow you must have been in so much pain to have done that'".... The writing of this season was just bad, and degrading to Cassie as a character. In the first season, she was flawed, but also sweet. She showed an interest in cars, was bit clumsy and even awkward, but also someone who had a lot of trauma and was a very interesting character. But she turns intro a caricature of herself in season two. Her trauma and 'daddy issues' becomes this comedic schtick and she just turns into a husk of her former self. She falls madly in love with Nate in the first episode (even though they didn't even like each other in season one, and she didn't became obsessed like that with other guys like McKay), and spends the rest of the season behaving in a completely irrational way. I feel strongly about this because I really related with Cassie in season one. Her need to please others was a very compelling character flaw, but in season two it just gets ridiculous. P.S I really dislike the way they started using Cassie and Lexi's mom as comedic relief in season two, because she really was a bad mom to her daughters. And it's absurd and horrifying that people found the "well, a corkscrew ain't gonna cut it" line funny. That is an insanely cruel thing to your spiraling and panicking daughter, no matter what she did.

Even if Nate did warn her that Maddy was never going to forgive Cassie, he led her on various times by telling her he loved her and tried to make Cassie look crazy when he said he wasn't getting back together with Maddy but he had all the intentions to. Also when he tried to break it off the first time and Cassie left, he chased after her and proceeded to hook up with her and tell her that he's basically head over heels for her. He definitely did manipulate her in some aspects, making Cassie want to keep going back to him, but yes this is also Cassie's fault since she has seen how Nate has previously behaved with Maddy.

The way people criminalize Cassie (a teenage girl) when she is a victim is digusting to me. Obviously, it is rare for high schoolers to actually get into the stuff in euphoria, but when I was in college, I saw many similar situations that happen to many of the girls have in the show. It sucks to see some of you replying to OPs comment shaming these girls and comparing their issues and vices. (Drug addiction, sleeping around, being a bystander, binge drinking, smoking, leading on your boyfriend, filming yourself doing sex acts, stealing, lying, being a bad friend, running away from home, shopaholic, unhealthy attention to men, unhealthy attention to looks, all of these happen in the show and are subjectively better or worse depending on who you ask) Nate IS a manipulative person. You may not have directly seen him do things to Cassie that were physical; however, he did a lot of horrible things to the rest of the charactes in the show (Maddy, Jules, His family) so that his character is portrayed as abusive. Cassie just so happens to only be emotionally abused and manipulated. Comparing abuse is not okay. For those who do not understand why someone like Cassie would keep sleeping with Nate, let's break it down: Cassie was never interested in Nate before he and Maddy broke up. He took advantage of her when she was drunk and persuaded her to have sex with him. She was just getting over a breakup. Many people sleep with people after breakups because they have a hole left from the person they were with previously. Now cassie has parental problems: her mom doesnt pay attention to her and let's her do all this dumb shit. MANY times in season 2, the script shows that her mother knew something was up with cassie and even implied that she was seeing someone ("single girls dont cry like that"). And we all know about her father, so I wont get into that. So with the lack of love she was getting from her home life AND her breakup, drunk Cassie needs to sleep with someone and continues to grip the only person who gives her attention. Physically, Cassie has the addiction to the hormones she gets from sex and the gratification Nates relationship gives her as well as the alcohol gives her. Statistically, people who sleep around tend to have lower self esteem, which is illustrated by the "beauty routine" cassie does and the outfits and makeup she puts on. She also uses these to attract Nate and the male gaze. Nate's abuse towards her instantly makes Cassie a victim and I IMPLORE you to look up why it is hard for victims to leave their abusers. Typically, victims of abuse are emotionally dependant on their partner and have low self esteem as well. Victims need a "push", like adrenaline, to get them to leave. But often they come back. This is shown in the scenes here cassie cried and starts pushing against Nate but ultimately he tends to "woo" her back. Now if you think about a normal relationship, when your partner is mad you dont try to seduce them into habing sex wih you. THAT is manipulation. Appealing to sex as a result of an argument or fight every single time is fucked up, and Nate continued to do it. I didnt go into detail about her drinking problem because most characters in the show seem to have that, but yeah when you drink, you tend to make worse decisions. If cassie is someone who is constantly drinking and is sleep deprived, it is going to be harder for her to leave an abusive relationship Tldr; i dont blame any of you for not understanding some of the content in the show bc that was how I was when i was a teenager. I remember being young and naive and always thinking "why does she stay with him if he cheats" and "why doesnt she leave if he is an asshole to her all the time and makes her cry." (This goes for men as well) Etc. Now I know that it just isnt that simple. And it is just something that you will have to learn when you get older and experience life and meet other people with different experiences than your own. You may not sleep with people and maybe you marry young and never understand that bit. But these things are the same whether it is sex or drugs or alcohol or even putting on 30 pounds because you "cant stop" eating sweets, or how you "can't stop" spending money on clothes or stocks or the casino. How you "have to keep working overtime" or "have to keep playing this video game." Everyone has their vices. And sometimes it is too complicated and maybe to difficult to explain to other people.

I’m just surprised at how much people turned against Cassie. In comparison to the vampire diaries triangle, viewers acknowledged that brothers shouldn’t have fallen for the same girl and then just picked the Salvatore they preferred. The audience mostly rooted for the brotherly bond and criticized /Elena/ for going back and forth between them. Maddie would most likely go back to Nate if she could, which would be just as bad, but I don’t think anyone would criticize her as much

@NS idkkkk from the hot tub scene, Maddie would go back. He has a privileged life that Maddie wants for her future, and I don’t blame her as she’s a teen. And so is Cassie. Maddie lied on Tyler and got him beat up and arrested because she loves the idea of Nate, Cassie got with her bffs ex because she needs attention from men. They’re both messy. But then Nate pulled a weapon on Maddie and himself, so idk it depends on sam levinsons writing if Maddie takes him back. To me they’re both victims of Nate. Elena for a majority of the show was just a whiny teen girl, and then was put in a sleep spell or something. People still think she’s the bad guy for choosing the wrong brother. Stefan was a ripper vampire who forced his brother to become a vampire, he’s not a good guy either

@NS I mean they’re characters. I kind of enjoy shows most when they betray each other. If people are gonna take it that personally then the abuse from Nate is still worse, and they wouldn’t be rooting for Maddie to beat up her former best friend if they cared about morals. Cassie was wrong as a friend. But she doesn’t deserve to violence for getting being with nate when he wasn’t with Maddie.
@dotcom3015
@dotcom3015 Жыл бұрын
@NS omgggg no teenage girls do not deserve to be beaten up. As a character it’s fine, cause it’s just drama and entertainment. But you sound like you actually support violence. Maddie is still guilty of getting Tyler beaten up and sent to jail for false accusations. Her consequence was Nate. Cassie’s consequences were from Nate, Maddie and her sister humiliating her. Her ex basically assaulted her and pushed her to have an abortion, she’s also had her nudes shared without her permission. Everyone on that show is constantly being traumatized, so no a girl sleeping with her friends ex is not the biggest deal to me. Sure betrayal hurts, but it’s a bit tame compared to the trauma every 5 mins. Even rue, who most people love, genuinely traumatized her sister. So yeh, hurting people you love won’t make you a villain in euphoria

If anything, Nate stole Cassie from Maddy. He saw her vulnerability as bright as day and focused on her as a way to: torture Maddy even more; prey on Cassie's grievous neglect and abandonment issues; and get them to both chase him, resulting in a rivalry he achieved in creating. And by the way, it doesn't matter how badly Nate abused Maddy right in front of Cassie's face because Nate is a manipulator. He manipulated Cassie using her yearning for love and validation into doing all of the things she did, because that's how abuse works. What I really want to see is Maddy and Cassie come to the conclusion together that it wasn't the fault of either of them and that they deserve better than Nate fucking Jacobs. I beg see the nuance and not state the obvious like 'sleeping with your bff's ex is wrong' because it's not an ordinary dating scenario where a friend betrays another. It's psychological torture induced by the common denominator: Nate fucking Jacobs. I repeat: the problem is not Cassie. It is Nate. Victims never get the compassion they deserve because people don't realise that what a victim does in the thick of the abuse or when they end up with PTSD doesn't reflect them as people. The abused party becomes a puppet for their abuser to fuck with, make them do deplorable things in the hopes that the abuse will stop or the abuser will be pleased that they did what they were told. That's the whole thing with Nate this season. He says and does things that Cassie has to play along with, which to an outside viewer like Lexi can be seen as selfishness, victim complexity and being generally insufferable. That's why I hate Lexi's play so much. The ignorance, despite being more knowledgeable and seemingly insightful than every other character, is absolute, and it's not even her fault. She's just as blinded by jealousy of her sister that Cassie is by infatuation with Nate. I hope these things get addressed next season. There's more I'm sure I could write but this is just a comment section and it may take up a lot of space.

Looking everywhere for this. The main issue I have with everybody's reactions to Cassie this season is that noone seems to take into account that she is being manipulated and abused by Nate, just like Maddy was before her. She does some shitty things but she is definitely a victim of Nate. There kind of is a line after their smackdown that points towards what you said. When Maddy tells Cassie "it's just the beginning" or something like that I really felt like she was trying to warn her that she is falling into the same pattern with Nate as Maddy had before.

"To be fair the first time she [comes to Daniel] she is on molly" and the second time she's drunk and emotionally vulnerable (after an actually horrifying night tbh). Cassie has an alcohol problem that imo always gets overlooked. The attitude surrounding S02 Cassie boils down to the good victim vs. bad victim mentality if we're being honest - which echoes the outro as far as "her still making the same mistakes" is concerned, which assumes her being taken advantage of, manipulated and whatnot is really her own doing which is... essentially victim blaming. Overall this is genuinely the best video on the topic i've seen so far, by a lot. Thank you to Anya from the bottom of my heart for not playing the Team Maddy vs. Team Cassie game and not being reductive or simplistic about this character. That being said I wouldn't say anything that's been done to her has been "deserved" (except maybe Maddy fighting her but even that was pretty dumb if you ask me) - and as empathetic as this analysis is I'm not convinced the show itself is making these points, as all of her vulnerable moments are quite genuinely played for laughs or to be gawked at and some characters have been rewritten to make way for this display of humiliation to happen

@@Indrea13 did you ever think Cassie could also have fallen prey to Nate’s abusive, manipulative tendencies? Or is Maddie the only one who gets to be Nate’s victim? Nate has been manipulating her since season 1, without her even knowing about it, by degrading her in front of the guys, in front of McKay, and TO McKay several times, leading McKay himself to treat her as less than, as an object, to not consider her feelings about the pregnancy, only thinking about himself and what being a father at that age would do to HIM. Nate knew Cassie’s history and that’s who he chose to latch onto, not because he genuinely cared, but because she was weak and easy. He could toy with her and always be in control. He could get back at Maddie for whatever perceived wrong she did him. He could ruin all of their lives and he’d be Scott free since he’s not a part of the friend circle, and no one expects any better of him anyway. Now, in my 30's, I find being plain or even being ugly at times to be empowering. I don't want to exist for the viewing pleasures of people attracted to women. If I choose to dress up, it's because I want to. Sometimes I'll put on makeup just to watch movies at home. I think what annoys Me is that a lot of people are putting the blame on Nate of “manipulating” and mentally and emotionally abusing cassie which he does but its only WHILE IN the relationship. Nate NEVER initiated the relationship, that was ALL cassie. In the beginning of s2 when they’re talking (cassie fully knowing how abusive and toxic nate was to maddy) when he asked her if she needed a ride to the party, she could’ve said “u know what, i dont think thats a good idea, i think im just gonna go home or take an uber to the party” but instead she said yes When they were driving in the car, it wasnt nate who pulled down cassie’s underwear, that was all cassie. He didnt force her to do it, or tell her to do it, he didnt even pulled down her underwear himself. Cassie did it herself because she took his kindness for granted and thought that he was interested in her ( which we dont know based on their interaction at that time if he was truly into her but in s1 he could care less about her, he saw her as disgusting) and because he’s a guy he probably thought to himself “well damn if she wants to fuck , then lets fuck” lol. And when they were at the party, he asked her multiple times “if ur ok with doing this, are u sure this is what u want, are u able to deal with the consequences?” (I don’t remember if that’s exactly the questions he asked, i would have to watch that ep again but it was about the same in that nature) and instead of saying “u know what, nvm i care too much about maddy to go this far” she said “yes” to all his questions and she continued to do what she did. Nate didnt initiate the affair, that was all cassie. Yes i do agree he was manipulative while they were having their affair (i dont call it a relationship because literally they were trying to hide it from maddy and everyone else so i call it an affair). So i think thats why i dont feel bad for her, and i dont relate to what she did cause she KNEW exactly what she was doing, she wasn’t manipulated into being in the affair, she STARTED the affair and i think a lot people forget about what truly happened for them to start the affair.

My problem is that no one, not Maddy , nor Mrs Howard ,nor Kat,not Lexi, not even the very sensible Leslie (who granted, had her own problems to deal with),absolutely no one pointed out that Nate was Maddy´s ABUSER; thats why what Cassie did was wrong! ,but everyone still reduced the situation as "she banged her bf´s ex" as if Nate is some property (not that i have a single spec of sympathy for him, i don't) If only Maddy and Cassie show this mindset i would have passed it as teen inmadurity and both of them as blind of the real dangeer Nate represents,but the series really framed Cassie´s beat up as something well deserved. Also, Cassie gets punished for doing that...but Maddy gets absolutely no retribution for helping Nate frame and send Tyler to jail? Because the second thing is worse honestly. Cassie´s writing this season was atrocious and unfortunately i doubt she´ll get better because the audience was not opposed to her decay, but cheered at her beating up scene.

The part about how actually relatable Cassie's behavior is to young girl's is true for some people. I've seen this behavior but also amongst grown-ups. I've done this myself to some degree but I could never loose myself for someone else. A bit like Maddy but not completely. Which is why I am so disappointed at Cassie but still gets her. And it's often because of this patriarchal society brainwashing everyone, with an uterus, to behave that way while at the same time shaming us for doing it too. Damn if you do, damn if you don't. And it does tells us, no matter what gender, to loose ourselves into this one person because that's true love. No that's what's called toxic monogamy.

I don't know- there's definitely a part of me that feels that Cassie just wasn't written well and that Sam Levinson needs more female writers in the room. She seemed overly hysterical in the way that men write women as her character wasn't written with much empathy or that no one pulled her aside and asked hey, are you okay? It's almost like the trope that women are men-obsessed and overly emotional which would be a great TAKE video. How women, not men are perceived as overly emotional and irrational. What do you think?

I don’t think it’s misogyny. Cassie actually does feel realistic in a way. Victims of abuse/neglect will typically seek out people they can latch onto for comfort due to past trauma regarding it, and Cassie being emotional over it is because she feels unloved by her peers. The crying is understandable since she latched onto Nate and he didn’t give her the time of day. The other female characters in the show don’t cry as much as Cassie because they haven’t been in her situation (aside from Lexi, though she processes her trauma differently).

Even after her tornado of violence and betrayal in s2e5, Rue still has so many fans. Yet why is there no sympathy or understanding for Cassie? Her issues with her dad abandoning her at a young age, being seen as an object by creepy old guys since what, 13 years old? No guy her own age likes or respects her beyond using her for their own gratification. When and how was she meant to have self respect and self worth and be confident when all the people around her only ever see her as an object of desire to be used and then discarded, never really sticking around for anything meaningful (in terms of the guys)? Loyalty to girl friends is one thing and she messed up big time in that department with Maddie, of course. But in terms of guys and relationships, this is all she’s ever known. Idk bro everyone hated Cassie in season 2 but I still loved her. I related to her and I saw the effect guys had on her and I saw it in myself. The way men treat her, the way that she perceives herself, nothing made her a villain to me. Sure, it was bad that she did sleep with her best friend's ex, but no one talks abt the fact that Nate slept with his ex girlfriend's best friend. The way men use her and her _liking_ it is my greatest fear. It's the reason I will never date men- for fear that the misogyny that I have internalised over the years will come out and I will become exactly like Cassie. People saw her as stupid when she went for Nate when she _knew_ she was abusive, but that's *exactly* what the crew was going for. Everyone is so caught up with $lut shaming her that no one realises the absolute heartbreaking internalised misogyny that Cassie has. She goes for a man that she _knows_ is abusive, but who she knows will give her validation in the only way she knows. Everyone blames Cassie but no one talks about how the people around her shaped her to be like that until she actually became the monster they had imagined because it was the only way she knew how to get the attention and validation she so craved after her father's death. Everyone blames Cassie but no one talks about Nate. Everyone blames Cassie but no one talks about her mother. It's horrible, and I always, always was on her side.

Somewhere in the mid 2010s we started actually educating girls and young women that they didnt need male attention to be happy. And somehow that internet conversation has circled back into shaming them. We shouldnt shame people for not being educated (in any topic). It's okay for people to have flaws! Of course Cassie (and other girls/women) should stop going back to abusive relationships (among other issues) But mocking them doesnt help them recover from their problems. No matter what a woman goes through --if shes vain and pretty, sleeps around, booksmart, workaholic, etc. -- she is ridiculed for it, and we have to stop! And calling someone a "pick-me" or "quirky" DOESNT HELP.

Um, no. Never have I ever acted so desperately, for any guy, in high-school, middle school or as an adult, and niether did any of my friends. I chased one boy when I was 6. Once I learned that it's not achieving anything positive I grew out of it. Let's stop normalizing unhealthy behaviors. Cassie is abnormal, that character represents a disturbed personality style. Most people don't have Cassie tendencies, they develop those behaviors by observing toxic characters like her in the media, and permitting themselves to act that way. Had most of you never witnessed this kind of behavior, your internal mechnaism - embarrassment, a healthy and necessary emotion - would've stopped you from continuing to act that way. But what Hollyweird is doing now is removing all internal mechanisms for decency and ethics by normalizing all kinds of F'd behaviors and delusions, to make the next generation quite literally insane. Mentally unstable people, with a completely distorted moral compass are much easier to manipulate and control. They have no principles to stand up for, they have no inherent morality other than the morality prescribed to them by the state. A perfect population - docile, complacent, unable to think critically or for themselves, desperate to conformn to the prescribed norms.

Was extremly clingy and every guy that gave her the briefest kind of attention she fell madly in love with. She was never single or not in love for more than a couple of weeks. In the end our friendship ended when she hit on my boyfriend. I think the writting was pretty accurate. Cassie doing shit she is doing is her potential as a character - show, that sometimes you can become fucked up person and hurt people around you, ruin your realationship with people and etc, because you did not go to therapy. Making her good person or just somebody who suffer over and over from men will not make her line as realistic as it is now. Women who live for being love by men usually end up withou female friends around , because of their deep trauma and needs of men attention. I know a girl like Cassie, and she would 99% do the same. She always was wondering why she had no real friends. But the answer was simple - women did not want to be around her, because she always putted men first, and all men saw her as a potential girlfriend, because she flirted with every man, because of her need of men approval. Therefore, I think Cassie's line is great and shows the possible outcomes of her trauma perfectly.

@@trinity3877 So a person can be given a pass for doing certain things because she was in an abusive relationship and others are just vilified for basically having a bunch of issues and lack of self-worth? Got it.... Sorry but what you're saying doesn't excuse Maddy from her actions either and I don't see the same energy for other characters compared to the people who lost their sh!t because of "girl code". I agree that Maddy was still a minor and Tyler was older but she did it only to make Nate jealous, she had already planned to say that she had blacked out and she didn't remember anything, she premeditatedthe whole thing... but granted she was still a minor, however the reason he was sent to jail was for what Nate did to her! She, didn't want that for Nate because she also like the lifestyle that he gave her, in the show she was never one bit of remorseful of what she did because again she premeditated it to make her abuser jealous (the sentence was going to be worse for Tyler yeah no doubt but still she didn't make amends at all, where's her lesson?) And despite all this I can still see through and understand thats she's a teenager and have empathy and compassion for her too but that's what I mean unlike Cassie (the other TEENAGER in the story) she had the support of her friends, school, public and most importantly her mom, (the dad at first did but he has his alcohol problems) Maddy's mom has always tried to give her the best and to protect her, she might of exaggerated about the p3do thing because was he was rrested but she was taking no chances to have Maddy exposed to that, whereas Cassie was sexualized since she was a kid, you can clearly see how uncomfortable she was even around her relatives or friends of the family when they where feeling her on her birthday and I ask you where's the empathy and compassion for this other teenager? So no, I believe strongly that other characters have done way worse than her and that everyone dismissed her feelings and only focused on that in the end, Nate was also responsible for what happened, she was remorseful, she tried to k!ll herself and Nate kept manipulating things saying that if Maddy found out she was going to k!ll her... but no the abusive part only applies for Maddy... And my intention is not to drag Maddy in the end she was hurt by her friend, she has the right to feel the way she does but what I find hard to believe it's that the audience (aka viewers) decided to basically lynch this "character" of a TEENAGER girl who made a mistake, dismissed all of her arc and gave everybody else a pass and she is getting the most hate? (I saw a comment comparing her to Hitler..saying that at one point he was also in a bad mental state and that he shouldn't be excused of his actions...like what? There's actual murders and very unstable characters and she's the one closest to Hitler?) Honestly if you don't see the hypocrisy than I don't know what to tell you...

Whats ironic about Cassie’s pursuit of love driving her to betray her friends is, her friendship with Maddy was the closest thing to real love she had in her life but she couldn’t see that and ended up throwing it all away. Maddy was her friend so her love was platonic but it was still love nonetheless.

But it’s hard to see a woman be desperate for a man who doesn’t want her because… who among us hasn’t been on some level desperate over someone who didn’t care, especially in HS? I feel sorry for her and I don't consider her to be a bad person. She clearly needs help from specialist, otherwise she's never gonna love and appreciate herself and this type of situations are gonna happen over and over again. Maddy is somehow obsessed with Nate too which is irrational due to the fact he abused her and i guess the minute she knew cassie slept with him could already mean maddy automatically won cause cassie fell in love with an abuser and a mentally unstable person

So why people can't even try to empathize a little with what Cassie is going through? This seems kinda misogyny to me...ops

We aren’t really judging her for being sexual or trying to figure out how to cope with rejection and accepting herself, it’s more so the fact that she stabbed her best friend in the back, didn’t take accountability for her actions and tried to compare herself to/judge those who live completely different lives and have their own demons they are battling and blame others for her actions. And then act like Maddie was wrong for being mad/hurt and that she was the innocent victim when she knew EXACTLY what Nate did to Maddie and how badly Maddie relied on her as her best friend to be her support system and be honest to. Cassie became a horrible person and I hope she can live with the mistakes she made and become a better person later on because she was wrong. She is young and has time to grow up, reflect, turn herself around, but she needs to accept her faults for what they were and how she completely ruin Maddie and hers friend ship and made it so Maddie is going to have a hard time truly trusting someone like she did Cassie. The way society sexualized her from a young age isn’t right and is vile, she is a product of her environment but it doesn’t excuse her actions herself and I hope she overcomes the role society has set out for her Edit: nate and Cassie are nowhere near the same for their actions. Cassie was wrong for what she did, and she needs to accept that so she can move on with her life and grow as a person, Nate needs to be in prison. Maddie did wrong too, don’t get me wrong, sending Tyler to jail was not right but I think she did it out of fearful love more than real love cause she was scared of nate and was in denial of what nate really was, which she learned after he pointed the gun at her then threaten to kill himself on top of her just to mess her up psychologically. Cassie’s betrayal is a personal one and very much realistic to how young people act but people need to look back at those problems and take accountability rather than just crying victim and blaming others for their actions which I hope Cassie does in the next season. I still hope the best for her character but this season was just so much of the worst sides of her coming out all at once and never letting people tell her the truth. She is emotionally hurting and I can understand it but it doesn’t justify her actions. Like rue did with Ali and her family, Cassie needs to realize what she did and apologize, not expect forgiveness immediately or ever, and go from there to be a better person

My issue with all of this is this: Maddie knows that Cassie is extremely naive and easily manipulated. She also knows that Nate is an abuser and manipulator. And her reaction to this whole thing is to beat Cassie up..? No concern whatsoever that Cassie might've been manipulated or is facing the same abuse that she did. It's just very odd to me. Also, the amount of abuse that Cassie is facing is absolutely ridiculous, considering that other characters on the show have done way worse. What she did was horrible, but nothing compared to a false rape allegation or physical assault.

I agree! Although I understand Maddy being upset since Nate had been such a tumultuous and intense chapter in her life and Cassie was her current support system. However, Maddy was manipulated into lying about that too, I agree with extending our empathy for Cassie and to me, she's a victim, but so was Maddy in that situation. They both have been mistreated and misunderstood. She wasn't in the right state of mind at all, as depicted in that specific episode, plus Tyler isn't innocent, he DID commit statutory rape (it's his responsibility as the adult to make sure she wouldn't be lying about her age). I think it's very irresponsible that those who side with Cassie tend to shame Maddy for this, but if women in physically and emotionally abusive relationships statistically side with their abuser, it's because they have been manipulated. It was also against her will to report it at all, which is incredibly traumatizing, and she was harassed by the police, it is clear that it wasn't a malicious action but a desperate one. As the victim of assault, she went along with a plan that Nate created to cover himself, it could have been anything. We as the audience may be in shock knowing what Nate did to Tyler in the first place, but Maddy herself knew nothing about that, or about Jules, and we need to understand her actions through her situation as a teenager being abused.

And I don't really mind the ppl who are angry with her, ppl aren't supposed to accommodate u just becuz you're mentally ill. U hv to clean up ur own shiet. Cassie was so beautifully written in season one, there was so much nuance to her character and how the world around her affected her personality and self esteem. For season 2, she was straight up written as a villain, and was almost a caricature of her season 1 self. There was very little nuance, and the screen writer literally scripting her as doing a whole host of terrible things (just for the drama, if interviews are to be believed) then daring the audience to judge her/see her as a villain is a bit strange imo. Like, what do you expect? We never even saw her feeling a shred of remorse for how hurt maddie would be, she got with Nate at first opportunity, with no hesitation, all he had to di was break the speed limit and she threw her panties off lmao. Idk, it really seems like Sam Levinson wanted to humiliate the character of Cassie just because. He wrote her as villainous and pitiful - a stark contrast from her season 1 self and where her character's headspace was at by the last episode of season 1- and didn't even show what triggered it? Has she never seen nate before or something? We didn't even get much of a look inside her head to justify it, or what it was about Nate that she even liked. There was nothing. I don't empathise her because she wasn't written as a real person, she was just a collection of "other woman" tropes. Sydney Sweeney is a great actress though, she really carried that role and did the best she could with it, but its a shame they didn't give her a less nonsensical storyline. Here's hoping for season 3!

Na, just na, don't try to justify her behaviour towards her closest friend since childhood with feminism, doesn't work. First of all: she is a 16 year old teenager not a woman, so of course we don't judge her sexuality here but it's fair to say that a 16 year old girl growing up in the 2000s should have been knowing better than to just act completely selfish. I am not saying we should be shaming people who did this for eternity or anything like that but we should definitely point out to younger people that no matter your gender or your disadvantages through society, you'll still have to stand up for your own mistakes, having it hard shouldn't make it easy for you to give zero fucks about your so called best friend.
