Hey, hey, in this episode, we check out the mega shootout of Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat. Yes, I know, it's been an audiophile favorite for many decades now... Alas, it never sounded any better, especially the newly reissued IMPEX 1 Step! Let's check out how it fares against the Crystal Disc and Tidal stream! elusivedisc.com/jennifer-warnes-famous-blue-raincoat-1step-numbered-limited-edition-180g-45rpm-3lp/ elusivedisc.com/jennifer-warnes-famous-blue-raincoat-low-number-ltd-ed-180g-lp-blue-vinyl-only-1000-copies-43-60 www.crystaldisc.jp Thanks for watching the video Famous Blue Raincoat MEGA shootout!

Thanks for showing some of the details of the 1Step Box. I find it interesting to see how much you get from Impex and how less you get for about the same money for other box sets. I am now looking for it. I am also very happy that the crystal discs are so expensive, no motivation to go mad on that price tag.

Absolutely - I think that AS and MoFi missed the boat on their UHQR and 1 Step reissue packages... they could have done something cool and instead did the same old, same old...

I have worked with developing CD test equipment for a decade when it were a thing. And implemented test parameters from red book and many orange books (orange book is the standards for the CD-R/RW and so on) . We has those glas discs back then also. One thing that they are is that they are flat (no warp). But also that glas has a difrent diffraction index than polycarbonate. For the laser going through. One thing that were Intresting to see in the video were that even when they make a CD that usally has a fully reflective layer of aluminum. On this glas disc they have deliberate opted for a much thinner that we call semitransparent layer. (that is what we use on dual layer dvd discs were the first layer is semitransparent also. Otherwise we could never read the fully reflective layer behind it.) So what we have here shown is a CD disc that let some of the laser light trough and wasted. And therfore only a part of the total light is reflected back to the diode plate for reading the lands and pits transitions (that is what we read, the length between the transitions). That is Intresting in that way that people debate if aluminum or gold as reflective layer, about which one is "better". Remember that this manufacturer is also making optical media drivers! As we clearly see on a 900$ disc that we are most likely not interested in to get all light back.. 😂 In other words aluminum reflectivity is probably good enough. And to use gold for better reflectivity is to solve a non issue. 😂 One thing that it does is that it probably extend the life of the CD player with less wear on the diode sensor. 🤔

I wonder if the gold has more to do with the spectrum it reflects back rather than 'quantity'. Gold was used on JWST because silver, aluminium etc wouldn't work as well at the longer wavelengths they were hoping to capture. And as you said the semitransparent works fine for the top layer of a dvd
@AmazonasBiotop4 ай бұрын
@@weatheranddarkness It has nothing with spectrum of what gold reflect back. There is no spectrum of wavelengths in the laser. It has one specific wavelength of 780 nm. When the beam encounters a pit, part of the beam is reflected from the pit bottom and part from the flat region between the pits, so these two beams interfere with each other and canceled out each other. When the depth is one fourth of the wavelength of the light. So 1/4 down to the bottom of the pit and then again 1/4 of the wavelength back up to the surface/land. Then the light is canceling out the other light that is reflecting from the surface/land. So in total no light is reflected It is this cancelation that allows the player to recognize the beginning and end of a pit. As we see that this only works if we have a specific wavelength and gold do not change that. We are actually just interested in start and end of lands and pits. When we have a constant scanning velocity then we can determine the pits and lands lengths that is of interest. A common misunderstanding is not that there is ones and zero as a digital media. As can be seen in illustrations of a CD under a microscope, we see different lengths of pits and lands in between the pits.

There are so many variables involved in comparing the various formats that definitive declarations of one having superior fidelity over all others is problematic at best.
