The Acoustic Sounds 33? Or the typical Verve one from a record store? The Acoustic sounds series 33 is worth every penny. So is the 45, but the 33 does well enough if you love this album. Worth the money over the regular verve version. It’s like $10 more. I know that doesn’t help you now but it’s worth it

33 RPM vinyl all the way on this. Sounds fantastic. I have quite a few vinyl audio file recordings and this is one of my favorites. I don't think it could sound any better, only different. But it's all subjective but there can't be a night and day difference.

I just bought the regular Verve version this week brand new for $20 and it sounds fine to me. Most people cannot afford these $150:to $200 and I have a very modest system too, I have yet to see anyone on You Tube give a bad review to any of these a high end sets. But when see some of these systems that these records are being played on they cost more then what I have in bank lol and I like Mike’s stuff on You Tube but it’s getting more and more geared to the high end people who can afford such things. Just my thoughts.

So, you taught me a lot about this album, and the reissues. I think I'll stick with my true 1st press NM. Thanks Mike. Edit: I got it, you sent it so quickly! Thank You. I love it, compared to the OG mono, although I found the OG warmer, but the Mono Girl from Ipanema is a bit warmer on the Impex as well, and sounds very similar to the OG. The mono on Side 4 was a great comparison for me. I love it so very much. With this special issue, we get more than we paid for in the world of Audiophile pressings.

I have the verve 33 stereo,this was my first copy and sound great,I then came across the George Marino cut acoustic sounds pressing that's very nice but the my father had his father's original mono in mint condition and I much prefer this one.yes it doesn't have the width but it has this sweet warmth and lovely layer up and down.i always go for the mono.

You are 100% correct this pressing has more EVERYTING I especially loved the percussion. It's a home run. I find the AP to be a bit bright. (sorry that I forgot I pre-ordered from Impex)

Angel's listening experience is like getting your eyes tested "which one is sharper, 1 or 2.....ok 3 or 4....ok 1 or 2" and that system works. Just pre-ordered this title from you, it's one of my favorite albums period.

A while ago I A/B'ed the AP 45 vs 7.5ips reel and was blown away the AP was muffled it had me second guessing my other AP titles.

Excellent review, Mike. Does your white-bordered original have catalog number SMAS-90438 on the back? These were pressed at the (at the time, brand new) Capitol Jacksonville, Illinois plant for the Capitol Record Club. Capitol mastered these in-house from tape dubs provided by MGM. Should have a stamped matrix.

Thanks for the review Mike when you get a record that you have listened to a thousand times and you know it by heart. This is a kind of record you can really do an in depth review on because you know what it sounds like so well. I had the same experience with the Donald fagen one step the night fly. I heard more of everything including the digital artifacts. For me if the 45 is much better I don't mind getting up it's well worth it. Most of the time I don't listen to records in their entirety anyway I'm probably only going to listen to one or 2 sides of the 45 and move to something else. Speaking of the vinyl I really like the mofi super vinyl. I think one of the reasons the one steps sound better is because of the exquisitely black backgrounds.

I gave “The Girl of Ipanema” a listen on Apple Music. Astrid is on the right on the stereo version, on the left on the Atmos version. The wood block(?) while Astrud sings trades places as well.

I have the OG (original) Canadian Verve pressing which sounds excellent. They didn't press near as many as the US pressing, perhaps that's why the vinyl isn't noisy. This record sounds stunning. Unless finding an OG is very difficult, in this case, I wouldn't need a reissue 60 years after it was recorded. That being said, finding an OG pressing is not easy but not as difficult as it is to find 1500 Lex pressings of Blue Note titles. The two track master of Getz Gilberto now, is not nearly in the pristine condition it was when it was first released. I wonder if Mike ever heard the original Canadian Verve pressing of this album.

I don't have a copy of this album you are talking about,but because of what you said about the impex version,I dont like the look of big packaging which is very nice looking,i love the look of the impex,and how there's linear notes showing the information,but I'm not a fan of discs with bonus tracks,but it's nice to hear them,and I use an atlp60 turntable plugged to gold wood 5210 speakers with a option for stereo or surround sound,and if I get a higher end system,and if I have a lot of money for records,then yes,buy the Impex,I wont be disappointed,and right now,I'm really better off,than you would with the acoustic sounds pressing 33 rpm,because I don't want to be flipping records every quarter of the album,and the 33 is longer and you can chill while listening to this album.

Unfortunately they misspelled Ms. Gilberto's first name in the booklet's liner notes. They spelled it as "Astrid" and it is "Astrud". A seemingly small detail I know. Yet, a bit of an embarrassing "boo boo" methinks.

Kind of appalling in this day and age where it's so easy to look up pronunciations in any language. This is a timeless classic; it deserves that much respect, at least, especially if you're monetizing, and influencing 50k+ people.

Folks, There are no 3-track masters available anymore. Lost or destroyed, Universal does not say. Impex used the best stereo tape available.

Obviously someone's preferred version depends on what they personally hear, their tastes, while allowing for the usual variables - e.g. record variables (e.g. source, EQ'ing, mastering, material, RPM, etc.), playback equipment, equipment settings, room acoustics, and so on, IMHO. While IMPEX is owned by MFSL and Mike is a MFSL music and equipment dealer, years of following his shootouts and buying accordingly have always proved he is consistently right on the best version of a record - without fail in fact! Thanks again Mike. So on paper IMHO the Supersense will not sound as good, but everyone's ears are the best test. It's much more expensive at $492 (or say about Impex's!!!) It's a 33 1/3 RPM versus 45RPM. It is a direct cut 12" acetate from a copy of the "original tape provided by Universal..." but what version is that which can still can be used? The Supersense packaging lacks the insightful information of the IMPEX too. Anyway, my 2 cents. I look forward to hearing the Impex! Thanks for the candid review Mike. Enjoy!😊

I agree the mofi vinyl VR formulation is amazing. The analogue productions clarity vinyl is “not” clarity. Too bad Chad is stuck on that. He needs to dump that clarity vinyl. It is significantly noisier than the mofi releases.

At a certain point they don't sound better to me, they just sound different. Not fond of 45 RPM records unless they have at least 14 minutes of music on each side. I think I have a Willie Nelson 45 RPM that has 8 minutes of music on one side and I have other 45 RPMs that have 16 minutes of music. 8 minutes is not doable for me. I love 33 rpm!

Isn't this record supposed to be heard in mono? I mean "Astrud on the right, or on the left" sucks. I hate the early stereo mixes of pretty much any album, precisely because of the aggressive panning which sounds horrible.

Mike you know you just assured Chad is going to take this as a challenge and do an UHQR of this now ;) Is there a reason why a new mix/master from the 3 track cannot be made? Seems that would solve the worn tape issue. The results with the Nat King Cole titles turned out incredible when they went back to the 3 track tapes. Defective 2 track… This is why plangent exists. I know, I know..digital step. I think practically though that “oh its a digital step, bad bad bad” argument is dead in the water now. You got warbly tapes? Plangent is literally a miracle worker. I mean these companies go through all the trouble of the beautiful presentation etc and attempting time and again the best audiophile version but leave the warbles. Seems someone could do this title with that process. Especially given the one step process apparently and overall in my experience so revealing when used with todays technology. That is the biggest positive and the biggest drawback it seems. Some albums it works for, others not so much. But in this case, when there are defects, they are also going to be emphasized even more. “It Must Be Spring” is a perfect example of the use of plangent being a total positive and the reissue totally benefiting from it and sounding very very good. So it does work and work well. Even if there was a plangent digital step to fix the warbles that doesn’t mean this title could not be done as a one step. We know who has digital steps in their product and who is many times very successful in achieving incredible detail. Santana Abraxas One Step being the audiophile posterchild for this. I get the “lets keep it pure” and I am generally an AAA guy, but to have so much positive yet keep it married to the negative defects that are even more emphasized when there is a tool to remedy this, does not make sense to me. Interesting that the Grundman cut is smoother but I was thinking Kevin mastered the AS version. It was George Marino. Which now makes sense. Marino’s mastering can be a bit aggressive at times. All that said, am I getting this? Of course. Just like we put up with a few crackles here and there for the pay off of fidelity with the best sounding lps, we will weigh the benefits of improved fidelity over the few warbles and dropouts with this Impex Getz/Gilberto. It does look pretty stunning, Ill say that much. And that is another pat on the back to Impex. Some actual interesting packaging, literature to read, fantastic photos etc. AND 20 bucks cheaper than the UHQR’s or the Mofi’s. Better product presentation, better sound and cheaper? That is a win. Wish Impex would do more titles. Whatever they put out is very very well done

Sorry but a small personal pet peeve: “Gilberto” is pronounced with a soft “G,” sort of like “giraffe.” For a record this important and commonly referenced, I think it’s worth learning this pronunciation. EDIT: I see Mike got it right at the end after using the wrong pronunciation at the beginning.

There is a problem with your logic. Firstly, the record isn't out yet. The actual price of the record is irrelevant, impex got Mike an advance copy, which means the actual benefit for The InGroove is that his early review will bring attention to his store. Secondly, he sells vinyl. Every positive review help his sales, so The Ingroove financially benefits, that's why he makes the videos. So every single video is going to be beneficial, to a far higher degree than the cost of a single record for free. Mike isn't an independent expert, he sells records!! So where does that leave us??? Well, what's his track record? Personally it's 100% obvious to me after years of following Mike's channel that he says what he thinks is true, and doesn't need to make stuff up. He's explained his opinion over and over, and if you find with experience you tend to agree, then MIke is one of the best guides out there. If you doubt this, give some examples, because i can't think of any.

I have the 45rpm, I wont be buying the Impex, it's not anyway near my top jazz record, I find the vocals mundane except of course for Astrud, it's a matter of taste ofcourse, if it floats- your- boat then fine, but not for me.

I have noticed everything Bernie does is “smoother”. To me, I don’t really like that. I want to hear more life like experience. Bernie likes nice soft music. Nothing bombastic. This is why he is not that good for rock. Bellman, Ted Jensen etc are better for rock. Bernie is great but his ultra balanced feel is daunting sometimes. Kevin Gray has the same issue. He gets way too balanced at times and loses impact. Some of these records need an aggressive hot cut. Maybe in this situation it is better. Mine is on the way.
