The one thing I learned at work is to never fight other coworkers battles. I did that until one time my fellow co-workers did not back me up. After that I looked out for myself and got a promotion.

From time to time you will encounter in the workplace a coworker will "game" you. They will say things to you in hopes you say it up the line --because they are afraid to. Maybe it will be about a new work rule/change or a change in the Power Structure of the workplace. So know this. A lot of people do not want to deal with the Political aspects of a workplace--but you MUST play it when it involves you in one form or another.

There's a fine line between being used, and being abused. You're there to be used. That's the baseline expectation you should have for any job. There's no point pretending we are friends or family. You're there to be used. But you are there to be used well. The second you feel abused instead of used - get out.

The only battle I will fight for others is when they are being bullied or harrassed. Maybe it's a mistake for my own job security, but I really cannot live with myself watching someone else being humiliated, devalued and harrassed without saying anything about it.

@feliznavidad6958 Well, it has been rough. Almost 11 months ago I decided to take a stand against a bully in my office who has been terrorizing others. They eventually targeted me, so then I went after them and pulled in everyone else who had been bullied also. The bully has been spoken to and was given an ultimatum that the disrespectful behavior needs to stop or there will be increasing measures of consequences. Unfortunately I did almost lose my job over it. Had to bring in the Inspector General's Office (it's state government job) so that my boss would be forced to listen and do something about it. A big problem was that this person had been bullying people for several years and our boss never wanted to put her foot down about it. Until now. She had to. I was going to also leave voluntarily if she didn't find a way to solve the problem. And I told her that. So she solved the problem. Hope it sticks, but this bully person is definitely a pathological narcissist, and she will succumb to her need for narcissistic supply eventually and then will start devaluing, insulting, and bullying people again. But, now I have a letter from the Inspector General that states very clearly that "the behavior in question could and should improve", plus all of my documentation on behavioral incidents. She won't get away with it again, I'll just keep saying something about and enacting official procedures to make it stop. Prediction: she will leave the job. It won't be "fun" for her anymore if she can't bully anyone, and she will leave and try to find another job again where she can be sh***y to people and devalue them just to emotionally regulate herself. She'll leave, I'm just waiting for it.

Office environment is so shitty the healthiest option is to stay out of it. Pleasing power people and making yourself look like someone you’re not is a bad piece of advice even if it boosts your bank account. What for? The price is self-loath and complete numbness.

I've always tried to interact with those on the way up in a company. I wanted to be associated with them , not the already established players. I like being viewed as an up and comer. It allows for some opportunity to make a mistake or two without it negatively reflecting on you.

Creating a rep as an up and comer is ideal; it even attracts powerful leaders and can help you make connections and get mentors and sponsor at the company!

I've found that making connections with people on your level is actually the best thing you can do. I have made good friends with people at work when I was young and seen them years later when i was looking for a new job. It helped my career wayyy more than trying to know some old higher up

when you are at school , you have friends and best friends and in your mind this could last forever but it ends. it's the same at work. today doesn't guarantee tomorrow and it's like finance as well. that's sad but it is.

Jennifer apart from taking courses what can keep us updated & relevant in our field in career gap which can be used to answer in upcoming job interview when asked about what have you done in that gap year ? Also how Story telling can be beneficial in such a scenario ..

Definitely creating a narrative about how the career gap is serving your potential and the impact you can make on them. During my year long (force) career gap when I immigrated to America I didn't have the cash to enroll in courses at NYU and whatnot, and the online course industry that exists now did not back then. I did open learning courses with HarvardX - actually the first course I did was Game Theory! I was also proactive in industry engagement; I read academic journals, industry publications and blogs, and I curated and shared that knowledge, and also shared my unique expertise (UAQ). I also followed others in the industry, engaged in conversations with them, and benefitted from knowledge and resources they shared and curated. This was really key in me getting a great job offer - I established leadership within the industry which mitigated risk from a hiring perspective.
