On the pay raise-- I applied for another position in a different department that paid more, knowing my boss would hear about it and ask me what what was going on. When she did I said, "this isn't about leaving. I love it here. This is about me having the agency to do more for the company and being fairly compensated for it. If you can make that happen here, I have no reason to be dissatisfied." I need to add that before doing this I performed a few extracurricular tasks that were crucial and demonstrated a value that my boss would be fearful of losing.

@JenniferBrick Update: my boss DID make that happen, she looked through the different company positions and their qualifications and opened up an opportunity for the highest position I could technically and confidently qualify for. It was a $12k/yr raise!! An extra $1000 per month and more agency/opportunity to contribute to the company. She wins (I don't leave for a better position elsewhere because I'm at a higher salary than I could earn elsewhere), AND I win (I love my job and I don't feel like I need to look for a higher salary/better position elsewhere). Bonus part just to brag: I originally started with this company 20 months ago at a starting salary earning $20k/yr less than what I'm earning there now. Two title promotions and a 73% raise in a little over a year-and-a-half.

You forgot the biggest mistake: thinking your company will reward your extra effort commensurate with the value you bring to the company. How often are employees expected to work as a manager for a year or more before actually paying them like a manager? If your boss can't keep you happy, don't worry about it - instead, switch to one who will. It's not your job to educate your manager; he's supposed to know, and if he can't manage that, it's the company's problem, not yours.

I've been reading into scapegoating, accountability/blame, and how it relates to consequences (up to and including cancel culture). Reviewing instances I've seen, and large scale cases we hear in the news, it's the folks who aren't publicly accountable to escape situations where they are (allegedly) VERY in the wrong practically unscathed.

Your coming in late example doesn’t make sense. Most companies have written policies about notifying for lateness. If you don’t call, you would be breaking two policies instead of one and would be in double the trouble.

In my work experiences, when I made an error, I received nothing but condemnation. But when others made errors, even more, serious than mine, they got forgiveness and sympathy. The last part of the video, about dealing with difficult workers, managers, and HR is not a police department. They are just workers like everybody else. If there is a conflict between two workers, they are going to do what's right for the company, not the victim. They usually try to get rid of the victim, especially if the victim has a low social status within the company. That's not right, it's politics.

The most I ever did was ask about some ideas on how to interact with a difficult person. I was asked if it was a problem and if I needed a new partner, just said I was trying to understand the person better to try and find common ground. A few minor points were brought to light and with some observation and an adult “let’s communicate instead of screaming” attitude it went fairly decent….until the person ended up fired because, well, they couldn’t stay adult for long periods of time.

There seem to be big cultural differences between countries. I wouldn't use most of these tips in the Nordic/European countries. For example, there are laws that require the management to get involved if the working environment is toxic and causing sick leaves etc. It is NOT the individual's problem (alone)! Also, if a team is under-resourced, it is the boss's/management's problem, not the employees'. Of course it's good to be proactive, but somehow I felt this video was aimed at people who like to act like work is all sunshine and roses and lack the courage to bring up difficult issues with their superiors because they fear more for their status and career development than want things at the workplace be safe and fair for everyone. In other words, the culture difference is playing for the team vs. (only) trying to save your own skin.

Yeah, most places in the US law skew heavily to protect employers, not employees. For example, most states have At Will employment which means your employment can be terminated at any time without notice for no reason and no minimum required paid leave. Pair that with forced arbitration and anti class-action clauses in employment contracts that aren't negotiable... It's wild here. But pay is high and there's opportunities 🤷♀️

Here in the US we don't have anti-bullying laws in the workplace as a whole. It definitely contributes to toxic cultures. Some states and companies have implemented anti-bullying practices but many places still do not have them and what's worse, many managers are the contributors to toxic environments instead of keeping the culture free of unhealthy attitudes and actions. But more places here are starting to turn things around & like Jennifer said, pay is good and opportunities are plentiful. If a place is toxic & management doesn't care, there are other places that do & are happy to have you.

Number two actually cost me my last job. I was so willing to "seek and accept feedback" that I became a lightning rod for all of the controversy and bad decision making going on in the business. I will say that other toxic workplace factors contributed to me inevitably resigning immediately/without a two weeks notice, but looking back the one thing I would change is accepting responsibility for all of the blame, regardless if I really was at fault or not.

@Concerned honestly, I hate playing the race card, and the height card, because that betrays "accountability". But considering many of my peers and superiors were taller and/or "more attractive", I have to wonder if there's a reason I was not taken seriously, and even made into a scape goat. I don't know if race was the problem, but I do think my overall small stature MAY have contributed to the issues.

I was waiting for “don’t talk about your personal issues” because I just disclosed to my manager that I started an antidepressant (don’t ask me why, I was EXTREMELY foggy…). Hoping that the fact I do a good job and am otherwise not a problem will allow us to act like that never happened…😅 Anyway good tips! I am 28 and have been with my company 10 years slowly growing financially and in my career. I use your tips a lot as no one on family really ever had a career and I didn’t go to college. Between you and Charisma on Command I’ve seen a lot of success more quickly in the last 2-3 years.

6:15 I don't agree. I work in department with 3 teams and one boss. Couple of times I had to do some tasks that were in charge of other two teams (not mine). My boss said that I did it so well, that I can do this now permanently. So unofficially they are my tasks now. Officially - still their. Have I got any raise? No. Every time I hear from my boss: "Ann, I know that it's their job, not yours, but I think you can do this better, so please do it." Thank you very much.

If you have no path for your pay and job title to reflect your work, take the skills and experience and market yourself to get it elsewhere. I've had clients get 30-40% salary increases AND correct their titles with new jobs when they were operating at a higher level. That's why I said in the video to look elsewhere if you're not actually getting the promotion that should follow 💜

Watching this video reminds me of when I was working under a bad boss who I later found out was undermining me the whole time. After the company decided to restructure our group and hire someone else to be our group leader, I pretty much broke all the rules: tell him he's wrong in front of others, set my boundaries, blamed him for the mess that he created in our group. Of course I did this all very subtly and professionally. I would say to the new boss "John and I didn't really see eye to eye on this issue, I wanted it this way because it is more organized and will help us work more efficiently. Whereas I'm not sure why John wants it his way because it doesn't make sense to me". He couldn't do anything about it because I had more sway with the new leader than he did, and I wasn't directly reporting to him anymore. I was kind of nasty to him at times because he gave me so much stress for 2 years and wasted my precious time. But yeah, if you have a toxic boss and can't work with him, find a way to bypass him or her to be in cahoots with his boss.

As someone who went to school and has a bs in international business orbit ended up in the esthetics business I’m constantly dealing with the issue that my managers don’t have business training and I can clearly see them making the wrong decisions. It’s so frustrating because as someone who did go to business school it’s clear as day how wrong they are but I just have to go along with their ideas. People should be promoted based in education and knowledge NOT time and friends in the company. Ugh.

Sometimes it works, but not all the time. Some bosses are happy to involve you and help see what's going on, but others not so much. I can't tell my boss anything because he just got fired. Actually about a quarter of the employees that were there a year ago have either quit or been fired. I've started looking for a job but I've been going through a roller coaster of emotions. Even though it is a dead end job and I'm likely in the next wave of people to get fired, part of me hopes somehow it will get better. I admit I'd rather get a cavity filled at the dentist than go through a job change. Has anyone else gone through that?

I have a few videos on making graceful exits. You can control you in this situation; be grateful, kind, and considerate on your way out. Personally, I used to document everything I did and have transition calls - and in two cases made myself available to answer questions after I left to make sure there wasn't major interruptions to operations (I was at senior leadership levels at that point). That said... sometimes people, including managers, feel hurt when you leave. But I think good leaders and good companies know that your growth will get to a point where an external move is what's best for you and will be excited for you.

I had to bring up a kind of people issue. We have someone who never turns up for a regular IT support meeting. My manager wanted to move it a later time and since the "early" meeting at 10:30AM was too soon in the day for them. The proposed time slot was one that I often have as break time , so I asked why it was OK to just change it for one person and if it would be OK for me to skip the meeting. No reply. We discussed it later and I said that in my opinion this co-worker would never attend and asked what action my manager would take in that event. I figured my manager was making a rod for their own back. The meeting time has so far not changed.

I am not following the emily story…she informed her employer for being late, i think that is the default thing to do. I am not sure what her lateness has anything to do with chad’s lateness. This doesn’t seem like a maneuver i would ignore unless i KNEW that the boss doesn’t know/care. Getting in trouble for notifying my boss of being late will have to be they way I learn that. And im okay with that.

This depends. I've worked in places where I had to do paperwork to categorize all external work (and they had to consent) in order for it to not be deemed company IP. So know what your employment contract says, and laws where you live. Also make sure they don't prohibit side hustles in your employment contract. Finally... gauge what reactions will be. If you don't have to tell them, do you want to tell them? Do you think it will help or hurt?

You would have to let both places know what days, hours, and times you are free to be scheduled to do both jobs, so yes. How can you do that if you don't. Most jobs don't give people the exact same hours/days anymore.

Hi @Jennifer Brick. I've just discovered your channel after a word search based on toxic, nasty co-workers and have so far only skimmed through your (and others' ) content. I feel like most of yours and other's videos are based on a stereotypical corporate office situation. However, my work life is more based around either hospitality, the performing arts, children's entertainment, and everything in-between! My 'toxic workmate' situation developed very recently and is beyond my experience in dealing with. I've met nasty, snooty, dismissive people before but this woman takes the cake in being manipulative and deliberately nasty. She targets the most emotionally vulnerable to the point of creating stress and misery for anyone who is sensitive. She's actually dangerous in this respect. I'm tough, but she's come close to causing me to crack. My boss did not like me bringing problems at all. During my first 6 months on the job I reported unpaid overtime, glass explosion, getting trapped in the basement during a fire alarm and being served deadly allergen by the office bully in the drinking water. He did not like me at all because I brought him so many problems! He just ignored me so I quit.

''It's not my job'' Yeah, I been in loads of places and like for some reason, they pass something to me that I have little knowledge about. It is crazy and weird. There are loads of people about who can do it, and yet pick me. I hate it, because it puts me on the spot, it makes me look foolish and the whole thing gets messed up. I have no idea how to do something. I know there is a few times I felt like telling them, but instead I show them. The thing gets messed up and they never ask again... phew.

Here is another good one. After being told what was not in my team's job function and to not do that task. We of course followed that direction. Yup, you guessed it, we got blowback. Don't say no even when you are told to say no.

I said this before but my boss had me doing 7 jobs and management work and they showed me off to other business owners. They wouldn't give me a raise. I said I could make more money else where. They paid everyone in the company flat rate.

The incentive encourages you to exit. You can likely get a job paying more, do only one job (meaning the valuation for your work goes up), and they'd have to 6x the expense (and onboarding cost) to replace you.

That saying “that’s not my job”… I just can’t stand it. I’ve seen medical assistants or the secretaries address the doctor with this statement while I was a patient. I’ve also experienced it when delegating a task.

Agh I hate those words! I think in healthcare there’s a big difference between something that’s ‘not my job’ vs ‘I’m not competent/ trained to perform this task legally or safely’ For example a healthcare assistant cannot adjust your IV or administer medication, even if a Dr asks them to but it’s so easy to say ‘sure ill just go and ask the nurse to come and take a look at that for you ’ if they ask why you won’t do it you politely explain ‘ sorry I’m not trained to be able to do XYZ, but I will get someone that can help with that’ staff should always work within and be aware of the limitations of their role so they don’t hurt anyone but a blanket ‘ nah that’s not my job’. Oooh that really grinds my gears! It’s like if someone asks a question in the workplace and you just say ‘I don’t know’ which is fine but I think it should always be followed up with ‘but let me ask someone that might be able to help’ or ‘ I’m afraid I don’t have the answer but I’ll certainly see if I can find that out for you .. how things are worded makes such a difference in my opinion

I once went to visit the ladies room at work and as I approached my bosses ,bosses boss stepped out, looked me straight in the eye and confidently stated “ I’d give it 10 mins if I were you!” 😂😂😂 She should NEVER have told me that! Ha! Weirdly it made me respect her more 🤷♀️.. I think that says more about me than her now I think about it lol 🙈

I told my boss maybe they should go find a new job, when I find new ways to make it work you’ll most likely get fired for it even if it doesn’t work-cost you both ways. HR manager will favor the company lie on report like police and your out unless you get a really good one that does there actual job otherwise if you have union talk to them they process you. If you met what I’ve met your workplace was already an (hostile environment) they’ve kept up good with it then doing actual work and minding there own dam business then to add weight to yours I don’t take bias as an excuse later to be told it was when people get fire and you were actually wrong for.

Don't blame someone else for your mistakes, when you should have been paying attention the whole time. The boss needs to own up to his mistakes fire chad and apolgize to emily.

Hmm, and perhaps if you’re gonna report your Boss to their Boss, it might be a good idea to not tell them; believe it or not, I’ve made this foolish mistake back in 2008…And speaking of things to tell your Boss (or not to tell your Boss), I have a perfect future Video idea for you, which personally applies to me…You See: As somebody who’s on the [Autism] Spectrum (“High-Functioning Autism,” to be exact), I’d love to see you do a Video someday on Disclosure of one’s Disability at the Workplace, specifically when it’s Appropriate VS Inappropriate to Disclose one’s Disability whilst on-the-job and, if to Disclose, how to do so…Such a Video would really hit home for me, as I identify as a “Disabled Adult” (per my being on the [Autism] Spectrum)…There’s a fine balance between using one’s Disability as an Excuse VS being too bashful to admit that you’re different and need some adequate Accommodations for your differences…Of course, such a Video on Disclosure of Disabilities at the Workplace wouldn’t need to be centered around [Autism] Spectrum Disorders (ASD) but, rather, it could just be based on Disabilities in General…I mean a lot of my friends also identify as “Disabled” but, in their case, they’re either deaf or Hard-Of-Hearing (hence, the reason why my friends really appreciate that you Caption all your Videos)…Originally Diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome the month I turned 20, I used to be very eager in my 20’s to hand out Disclosure of my Learning Disabilities to Supervisors like as though it was candy, but now in my 40’s I’ve been much more conservative in my approach, only Disclosing my Disability whenever absolutely necessary…Life Experience has taught me that Bosses and Co-Workers don’t need to know all the in’s-and-out’s about you, because when you go to work, you’re there to get a job done, as “Work” is an “Exchange Of Goods and/or Services for Money,” not a Social; although, sometimes, it’s 100% necessary for an Employee to Disclose his/her Disabilities to their Employer(s) and/or Boss(s)…But the Question at hand is when and, if/whenever so, how to go about doing so…P.S. - If such a Video (about Disability Disclosure To Employers) already exists here on your KZbin Channel, well than I’d love it if you could direct my attention to that Pre-Existing Video or, even better yet, if you could do an Updated Video on that…My Worst Case Scenario was a Supervisor defiantly informing me about a 5/6-year-old High-Functioning Autistic niece/nephew they had who behaves a lot maturer than me…That Supervisor and I never got along very well and when she threatened to fire me, I went over that person’s head, to which the Supervisor found out and lashed out at me in direct retaliation for my having gone to their Supervisor expressing my concerns of being threatened to be fired…That was fun (sarcasm)…To say that Disability Disclosure (to an Employer/Supervisor) didn’t go very well for me would be, like, the understatement of the century… . By-The-Way: Thank You Very Much for making your Videos so “Deaf-Accessible” by offering Human-Generated Closed-Captioning for all your Videos…Although I’m neither deaf nor Hard-Of-Hearing, I know quite a few people who are and whom decent Closed-Captioning is a total must for…You have no idea how many KZbinrs don’t even begin to consider “Accessibility” and being as “Inclusive” of their deaf or HoH Viewers as possible…Actually, on numerous occasions, my (deaf) friends hand me the Remote Controller so I can set the Volume Levels to where I like it while I meanwhile ignore all those Captions along the bottom of the screen that my friends need in order to know what’s being said in the Video…It’s tough having deaf friends while meanwhile not knowing any Sign Language, but there are numerous free Speech Transcription Apps which work on most Cell Phones…Communication between my friends and myself mostly just involves a lot of Back-and-Forth Texting & E-Mailing and me utilizing Speech Transcription software as my friends meanwhile Write or Text me their Replies…Of course, I know of a person who hears as well as I do but who says she prefers having the CC turned on so she can read what’s being said, nonetheless, as she says she’s a very “Visual Learner”…Well, and plus CC helps whilst viewing in very noisy environments and/or where it’s preferred by others for somebody’s device to be muted…And I still haven’t taken the time to look you up in Instagram (your IG that’s associated with this KZbin Channel, I mean), but I’m assuming you likely Caption any of your “IGTV” Videos, “Reels,” and “Stories” too…I still need to get over there and look up the Instagram (that goes with this KZbin Channel, I mean)…
