Maplins used to sell these "smoke" generators for under a tenner each although they were too large for 00. Down side to these units is the "smoke" is heavier than air, so once it leaves the exhaust, it drops to ground level before dispersing. Another thing to consider is not getting any water onto the circuit boards.

Many thanks for this video, Jenny. Even if in Italy most locos are electric, many diesel one are in active use, so that device is worth to be considered.

Well I have a different take on model train "smoke". Now I know that some like/love this "smoke" but I am not one. No matter what scale the smoke unit is in or whether it is steam or diesel, my perception is always the same. To me, it always looks like an ash tray with 1 or 2 lite cigarettes in it with tobacco smoke curling up from the lite end. On my model railroad, all my engines are DCC and have sound, but if I see smoke coming from any engine that is running, I know I have a real fire coming from inside. I guess it should be said "To each his own".

When the smoke is timed to the engine operation -- whether diesel or steam -- I think it adds an additional level of operational detail. If you can see it in real life it's nice to replicate it in scale. Of course, if you have smoke coming from your electric loco, your assumption of fire is correct! 😄

would of liked to have seen the size of the unit so could get an idea of what space would be needed to fit one. but certainly a good thing :)

I think the steam looks fantastic on steam trains but it still looks like steam on diesel engines, so it doesn't do it for me. It is good that there is no heat to cause a scald. Incidentally Jenny, the 'other' types of smoke come in all different smells. I have three on buildings. I chose burning wood and coke smells, because that is what the fires were in WWI. However, you can get all sorts of pleasant fruit smells as well. I don't get any residue that I can see, possibily because I don't run them for very long. It's really for photographic effect for exhibitions.

Well i get the smoke thing but im not real keen on the idea of having any moisture anyware near my electrical items and like locos and rolling stock. The other issue would be where there is moisture there is a chance of growing mold on the layout so its a no from me. I love the idea and it is a cool one but i believe that any good diesel blows no smoke and just has heat haze. I know this is a model and is a great invention and addition to locos. Cheers from John in Australia

"Just add water" that's pretty cool, you were right - I DO like this!😂😁😁 Wish you'd shown me this t'other night!😁 For me, the only thing "missing" is that slightly blue / black tinge to the smoke, but clearly that's going to take more than H20!

My thought, too -- could something be added to darken the steam to look more like smoke? What about coloured water?

Tres cool! Very realistic sound and smoke on a loci that has been appropriately weathered. Jenny, what is rhe second exhaust outlet, farther back and offset to the right -- it was smoking too. Does it need to be primed separately?

Thanks It's some piece of neat electronics. Is moisture build up on the body of the loco something that happens much? I wonder how some weathering techniques will fare if there is a bit of 'condensation' and a wipe-down is needed? A new angle to the weathering? !:^) Seriously, I do hope it holds its own. Anyway, great article; so much more advanced that a 'hot-oil' alternative. It's good to have a closer look at the 'Vaporising Smoke System' up close and in action so thanks again Jenny. Keep Safe now. Cheers!

I don't do DCC as I do not like wasting money on status symbols that don't work half the time. Is this available in DC too?
@JenniferEKirk
@JenniferEKirk 2 жыл бұрын
DCC has been around for decades now and it's a reliable technology, not a status symbol. As for this being available on DC, no. The smoke generator is tied into the locomotive's electronics, it won't work without them.

It's really a question of how much scale realism you want -- lights, sound, smoke, weathering, etc. There are still people who run squeaky clean trains on shiny layouts -- I'm into more realistic and less tot-like appearance but that reflects my modelling experience and artistic bent. I loathe the term "playing with toy trains".

Look good but needs some work improve realism A constant stream of "smoke" is ok but need to tie it in to the accelertion of model so that revving up produces more smome and at idle it needs to back down again.

The ONLY downside, which is evident here, is it needs a dark background. But for a diesel, you don't want steam like smoke coming from it for the most part. If its a healthy engine anyway!

Nah. The only diesel they have a chance of making work is a Deltic due to its distinctive two stroke exhaust. Will anybody every be able to replicate a 40’s exhaust at full chat on a heavy freight at 30mph? I doubt it.
