I'm usually not interested in opera music which might be the reason why I missed the release of this song. Luckily you got it requested and did react to it. Gave me instant chills all over again and again during your whole reaction. Very well explained but I still wonder how someone is capable of such perfection if not being a dedicated opera singer for many years. This one left me just speechless. So thanks again Jen!

Rob shines so bright in this one. I have to give props to Austin for getting Rob on this project, especially knowing Rob, as a rusty but trained opera singer, was going to outshine him. I love how little ego there is in Home Free and how happy they are to bring attention to each other's talents.

isn't austin the one that (IIRC it was a live show?) laid on top of the speaker and asked tim for a back massage? i know for a FACT he's got a cat named DAWG... although he never SPECIFIED what he was looking for... otherwise it could have been located and returned to him....
@lrfcowper Жыл бұрын
@@cynicalminion He sat on a speaker and asked Tim to hit a bass note so he could "feel the bass in my butt". Tim did and he stumbled off the speaker and said his eyesight went blurry. There's a video out there somewhere. And yeah, Austin has a cat named "Dawg". Sort of. Dawg is kind of a neighborhood cat, so even though he often sleeps and eats at Austin's place, he isn't always there. He and Amberly also have a cat named Winnie that they rescued when they were at a bash in Winnie, TX. Winnie had been rejected by her mother and was literally screaming, so tiny she didn't even have her eyes open yet. Amberly swore they were just rescuing her and weren't keeping her, and Austin was like, "I'm thinking that's not gonna happen." She's turned into a beautiful cat who loves to travel with them.

Rob had some* experience in College Musical Arts Program .... he has the Lower register and easier chest voice projection and rolling Rs and of course his silky smooth Mid Tenor vocal talent. Austin just hits the notes with practiced Lyrics (IN ITALIAN) as his challenge ..... the vocal, dynamic and higher part in solo or harmony is harder to hit cleanly .... but, then THAT IS WHY HE IS SO GREAT .... shear ability in the upper register. GBjj

Thank you for reacting. Rob said he studied opera in college but hasn't sung it in about 15 years. I read that he did this for his father who loves opera. This video brought Dad to tears. Austin was the mischief maker here and encourages Rob to do this video. Rob's nerves were for naught. They were awesome.

Great analysis of this Jen. Nice to hear someone who's knowledgeable enough to review this. My mother was a great opera fan and I was the only one who'd accompany her to a performance, and I've always been grateful for the exposure;which hardly qualifies me as an expert. Like others here, when I listened to it, my impression was that Rob was singing opera(as suited his training) and Austin was performing musical theatre(as suited his training); although he apparently had Rob give him a crash course in the genre, so it came across kind of as Teacher/Student. Still lovely to hear; them singing and you intensely watching/listening and giving honest voice. In all the ugliness in the world right now, a couple of minutes beauty...but then that seems to be the men of Home Free's mission.

I consider both of them to be highlights of my life, and I have never before or since seen so many thousands of people weeping tears of joy at Pavarotti's performance in his home town. The song still brings tears, and I was delighted with the performance from Rob and Austin.

I like how the old training shows with both of them. Rob has had operatic training..and it really shows. Austin's musical theater training shows, as well. What I'm amazed at as how many people didn't realize or notice how much Rob holds back when he's singing with a group, so as to not overwhelm the sound.

Yes this is wow, wow and wow.. This is insane. It is extremely good. Fantastic. Both are doing great. But Rob, I'm perplexed. His voice is just magical, so rich, so warm and powerful. Chills just ran through my body. It flows into my heart. For me he will be able to stand with the greatest of opera singers. It's not often that I listen to songs by opera singers 5 times and more in a row. But here it is. Of course I hope that both will always continue to do Home Free, but I wouldn't think it wrong that such "trips" are made more often. Opera, country, ballads, soul etc. I think anything is possible..

While I was in Italy, I attended an Italian opera, which, at the time, I had no idea what to expect. By the time it was over, I gained a respect and a liking for the music. Rob (who actually studied opera) and Austin (studied musical theatre) do a wonderful job! Another singer who has done this song is David Phelps. While studying music at Baylor University, his instructor tried to get David to do opera, but he chose to sing for the Lord. He mostly does gospel/hymns, but has done other genres...Can't Help Filling In Love (Elvis), I Have Nothing (Whitney Houston), and Hello Beautiful (Alzheimer).

Rob definitely approached this from a traditional opera styling, if a teensy bit rusty (Imagine if he had been singing opera for the past 15 years.) Austin approaches it from a musical theater performer sings opera. I hate the slide from Austin, and I see I wasn't alone questioning that one duo note at the end... I love this performance, from both of them, but Rob was making me swoon. Lol. I will say if you go back through Rob in Home Free, I think you can now really appreciate the versatility of Rob's voice. Listen carefully to parts where he blends with one of the other members. He has the ability to really darken/lighten/bring forward/narrow/and widen his timbre to match each of them. He really does glue them together.

Thank you. Yours is the first actual analysis of this performance I have seen from a vocal coach so far. Oh I think Andrea Bocelli gives Pavarotti solid competition on this one 🙂 Homefree did not specialize in country music until the SingOff talked them into doing it for their competition in 2013. Tim and others have talked about it in interviews. What a singer's musical training is can be very different from what they end up doing professionally. Case in point, Avi Kaplan is a formally opera trained basso profundo who sang pop acapella in Pentatonix and now sings his own compositions in folk rock. Maybe we should get Avi to do a bass aria out of Cosi fan Tutte (The Magic Flute) by Mozart next? Rob is an opera trained tenor. Rob hasn't done singing on his own. Austin is also formally trained but sings in more of a musical theater and pop classics direction. He developed his channel as did Tim Foust as their income sources during the pandemic quarantine with no touring for live shows which Rob and Austin used to release this performance.

Oh yes, Avi and Rob together, LOL...

@@npilot4445 bass and tenors don't normally sing arias together in opera. One or the other and bass parts are missing which is part of Avi and Tim Foust's motivation to write their own music.

Jenn, Rob was actually trained in Opera. They made me cry it was so beautiful. Truly enjoyed watching your reaction and your analysis.

You wouldn't expect a country singer to attempt opera. It's not what they do, but they did bring their strong vocals and did amazing with it for people that don't do opera as a job. It was beautiful and yes Rob amazed me the most because if I closed my eyes I can hear Austin's voice as Austin, but wouldn't know Rob was the other singer because he is singing lower than I would expect and it doesn't sound like him, but that is excellent.

From all reports that I have seen, Rob and Austin were pretty nervous about doing this as well. I have been waiting for your reaction. Thank you.

I'm also a huge fan of Pavarotti and his version of this, and tbh as much as I love Austin and Rob, I was very wary when I checked it out, but they did an amazing job! Rob could fool many as an actual opera singer... His phrasing and style is extremely close, and like Pavarotti he makes you FEEL the lyrics.

That is because Rob has done opera singing and is trained in opera singing.

Nice Jen :)!!! I'm not an Opera fella, nor do I know anything ... We do get a few pieces from Austin (solo stuff) that has given hint or leaned toward his operatic ability(s)/sound likeness. Rob on the other hand - well .. a surprise/not a surprise (for me anyway). Knowing he's an absolute beast ... I mean, we get so much different things out of him (variety) ... and he kills it. Here -- such power ... and I believe he was just getting warmed up!!! I think there is more there; honestly, believe he's holding back some (and not to over-power) - very controlled. If this style were more regular -- it would become so much more refined and freer ... Air & Diaphragm! Thought it was tremendous. Yeah, I do have that smirk on my face!!! And yes, I did watch most all clips of Pavarotti's performances (for comparison). Hmmm -- Could Pavarotti pull off Country??? :) Thank You!!! Be Safe

I feel like Rob is really connecting with his inner depths in a similar way he did during End of the Road. Even though I realize the styles are very different, it seemed to me that this was him reaching for something similar as far as digging into the depths of himself to get that rich sound. I read in another chat that he excelled in opera when he studied music at University. He was very nervous because he hadn't sung opera in 15 years. Austin was very nervous to step this far outside of his comfort zone. This made me think of the comments of one of the Sing-Off judges that any time they have an opportunity to "step off the ledge" they should do it. I'd say this qualifies.

I just went to my first Home Free concert on Friday! They did not do this song, more's the pity. I went for the bass notes and really enjoyed the rest. Tim did not disappoint.

This is so very awesome! Rob does have training in opera. He just and sung opera in about 15 years. He does as well as Austin have musical degrees from college. Love your reaction!

I really enjoyed this groundbreaking performance. I loved the courage and passion to explore something new and different. I have no musical expertise of any kind, but I am awed by what I heard. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Rob and Austin. I am glad Jen that you seemed to enjoy their performance as well ! Greetings from the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
