Blake1013 omgg me too, I got a 30 gallon to start with and I can't make up my mind in what to put in it. I used to have a 120 gallon tank, I had a silver dollar in there, three giant bristle nose pleco, a spotted catfish, idk what they're called but I call them sharks, we had one of those, he got about 7 inches in length really quick, we also had a couple tetra and two kissing graumies(don't know how to spell them) but we would add them one by one to get used to each other and we never had a problem with how they behaved with each other, eventually I added a rescued female beta fish, even she behaved herself and had a little corner of the tank with her leaf bed and nest. Just goes to show that not all fish, even with tempered behaviors around other fish, can coexist. We had no problems....besides one..this was all when I was around 10, and I insisted I got a little black and white guppies that was so cute, and it lived in there for about to months then died, we never figured out why. Oh and we had a snail infestation, dont know where they came from there were so...so many snails.

I use coconut oil to lube seals and moving parts in my aquarium equipment. That may just work for your ball valves. I love your videos Jennie! If you don't mind a suggestion, I think these new tanks give you an opportunity to dig into the science involved with environmental preparations. Topics like the nitrogen cycle, gas exchange, etc.

The schedule 40 valves you used can become stiffer and harder to turn over time. Though more expensive, true union ball valves that are typically used for reef tanks are much easier to turn and do not become stiff over time. I have used and reused them for years without issue. Check Bulk Reef Supply for Cepex ball valve. Love you see your progress.
@zsxking7 жыл бұрын
+1, true union ball valves will be the best. Since it's from tube, another cheaper alternative can be Two Little Fishies Ball Valves that are made for their reactors. Those are pretty easy to turn as well.
@michaelgroves39197 жыл бұрын
Put all your valves in one location on either side of the racks. You started you are using half inch cpvc pipe. By moving the valves to a centralized location you can use a smaller valve Tay quill be easier to turn. It will also reduce the number of barb fitting you use thus reducing the number of possible leak points. If you have be any questions let me know.

I would leave the racks OUT from the wall, so you can access the back when you need to. Build doors at either end to block out off. And I'd replace the clear tubing with no-kink, I think. Everything looks great, though :)

Something I've wondered with these racking systems is how you get to the drainage valve once it's in place. Is there a gap between the shelf and the back that you can access from below? Also, wouldn't you want to have control of the water before it gets to the hose barbs (so they don't pop off due to water pressure)?

@maddiew50075 жыл бұрын
It won't run uphill, that is for a future tank that will run downhill through that pipe and then with the rest of the runoff from other tanks. As far as the receptacles go, it looked like there was enough room to still use them, not sure though.
@jordang63587 жыл бұрын
Love that goldfish drawing you made! Not sure if you are looking for tips, but maybe consider moving the ball valves for filling the tanks over to the hardlines. This way the water pressure is not on the flex tubing and the potential for leaks will be greatly reduced and turning the valves will be easier as well. Keep up the good work and I think the pond will be awesome. I have many ponds and goldfish seen to do so much better with the extra space and with the live food sources a pond provides.

Unfortunately those valves are just tight. They will loosen up some but not much and I don't believe there is any way to lubricate them. Have you thought about a true union gate valve? Easy to adjust water flow and you will have the ability to disconnect with another inline union.
@shewantsthediscus78906 жыл бұрын
I love the ball valves from Two Little Fishies, they can be found on Amazon or Bulk Reef Supply, and likely other stores. They are very easy to turn, even the large sizes, and they are already barbed since you are using flex tubing. I've been using the 1" size to drain my tanks for 1 year so far, and they are still just as easy to turn as when I bought them. I use them very regularly, often daily.

Hi, It is going to be a great set-up. If you use black ribbed pipe it will not kink at the bends like the clear hose does. Also best to use jubilee hose clips where the hose is attached to the rigid fittings on pipes that are under pressure.

hi jennie, i got 7 pearlscale goldfish a few weeks ago online. 2 of them have a bent/crooked tail and im not sure if it is caused by ammonia, not enough space or the shipping bag. the others are fine. thanks :)
@mr.tuxedo15147 жыл бұрын

@saarxddd7 жыл бұрын
Mr. Tuxedo mostly when a tail is in a weird shape, it won't go to normal unfortunately. The fish can still have a good life, but the tail can bend even more and become a problem and they'll have trouble swimming. Just keep an eye on them, I don't think there really is a lot you can do about it.

Check out Bulk reef supply for ball values that are easy to open/close. Also, I would suggest upgrading the clear tubing to reinforced tubing as you might have higher pressure then the regular stuff is rated for and put plastic or metal hose clamps on all the barbs to ensure nothing blows off.
@kimber-lynnward55457 жыл бұрын
use o-ring lube from a pool store for the rings. Vaseline works but it will break down the rubber over time. check the set up of your drains. i'm looking and i'm hoping you will install the ball valves after the unions, but if you don't, i'm worried its just going to drain continuously. i hear valves and i only see unions, so i thought i'd just say something to look out for you.

Question how do you plan on getting to the ball valves once you have all the racks in place and push against the wall? Seems like access would be limited.
@Mitch-rd9gs7 жыл бұрын
Your system is so smart but so simple. Amazing!
@Aiken477 жыл бұрын
I would keep the gap between the rack and the wall so you have easy access later. You can use irrigation solenoid valve to time your open/close for the water change drainage. You can also add an internal piece of pvc as max depth drained with a guard to protect the fish from draining too much water. A float valve can be used to assist with stopping refill water at your preferred height. To lubricate the ball valves, you can use silicon grease used to coat O-rings on water proof camera housing.
@Rogue-Rusher6 жыл бұрын

@captivebredcanada7 жыл бұрын
I didn't read through all the comments but in case no one else mentioned it, you should replace those cheap ball valves with high quality ones. They will cost more but in the long run you will be better off, try a plumbing supply store that specializes in plumbing parts, or baring that a reef shop may be able to help you out since high end plumbing is usually more of a saltwater thing. I am in Canada so I can't recommend a specific shop but I'm sure there are tons of places you can order online if you can't find them locally. Even the union ones at lowes are higher quality then what you have.
@joshchaney88227 жыл бұрын
Those ball valves are always hard to turn at first. Once you get them to turn a couple of time then they will become easy. I use similar ball valves on my Kio Pond and my 200 gallon fish tank. Unfortunately I have not found a good lubricant that wont hurt the fish and stay on the ball valve.

In my fishroom, I've had some luck with Cepex ST Series true union ball valves. They are of decent quality and easier to turn than the standard pvc ball valve. I believe I paid about $20 each, so they are a bit more expensive. So if you need around 20 of them, it's a big pill to swallow for some stinking valves. I'd try one out first before making that kind of investment. I've had my fishroom for about 15 years. Lots of upgrading, downsizing, and getting things just right before I plunged for the better quality valves. I finally settled on a central system, with 24/7 automatic drip water changes. Just three valves in my entire fishroom, instead of the 20+ valves I had before. Needle valves can work nicely also, but they get really expensive. They are super easy to turn on/off and to adjust the water flow. I use one for my drip system. Luckily, I only needed one. Anyways, have fun with it all. Glad it's not me doing all that work!
@chefkda7 жыл бұрын
Also, the clear tubing that goes before the ball valves will eventually expand, almost like a balloon, due to the water pressure. May want to switch to braided tubing.

Gate valves are for fine tuning flow rates. They're not intended for constant on/off applications. Like she will be doing. Use sch. 80 ball valves.
@truly16767 жыл бұрын
I find that standard style gate valves, not cone style gate valves will always perform smoother and remain turntable as opposed to ball valves, which always become hard to turn and freeze seeming, all together. I feel that in the tight quarters shes going to be working, the ease of turning a gate style valve would be best served here. IMP

I had a 30 gallon ready because I was planning to order some over the summer so it wouldn’t be cold for the fish, but I went to my pet store to get some corals and shrimp for my saltwater and I always have to look at the goldfish. They’re my favorite fish I just love them so much. And I got so lucky, they were having a sale on them too. $5 each!!! It was a deal I couldn’t pass up. So I got two.
