I really, really appreciate you showing some of the the real life dilemmas and disasters of fish keeping. I think we always tend to, as you said: 'gloss over' the bad things when expressing a hobby or activity. Especially on social media. As a beginner fish keeper, I am so thankful for your honesty. I know it will prevent many issues in the future as well as bring about the right types of mindsets for these hobbies.

I actually have to disagree about simply culling about the tails... I've been breeding my goldfish for five years and have many babies that have grown up with that. They are amazing huge fish now that are extremely happy and healthy!! Please don't cull them, just keep them as pets. That's what I do and after I am able to sex them I keep them simply in a show tank. I have about ten adults like this.
@GalacticHeroEtna7 жыл бұрын
While that sounds nice, its not really possible. Goldfish spawns produce huge numbers of fry. A single person only has very limited resources to take care of them. We are talking room for them to grow, food, water changes etc. The hole point of culling is really to reduce the number of fry so that the ones you are interested in have a higher quality of care.

Ricardo DLT all my babies are extremely healthy, I still breed. And I do cull, but because i have enough space and funds I do keep the veiled ones just as pets. I love them and personally wouldn't cull them. But I do cull the fish I see health issues in.

Don't be discouraged. As you said these things happen to all fish keepers. My wife and I have been keeping fish for years and just this Friday lost almost a whole reef tank due to a heater malfunction. The heater was shocking the tank while we were at work and shortly after my wife returned home it blew up and started smoking. The down side we lost an aquarium that was one of the focal points of our house and had 4 years of growth. The upside we still have a home no people were hurt and did get to save some livestock. Keep on with the good work and try to stay positive.

Thanks so much for this video and your whole channel. I also want to thank you for telling us about Dandy Orandas because I am so glad I found Ken to buy fish from. I have only been keeping goldfish for about 10 months and he has been a godsend. I have had SOOOO many ups and downs taking care of fancy goldfish and it was so reassuring to hear you say that things have happened to you also. I think those of us who watch do think things go perfectly for people like you and Ken and other "professionals". Would love to hear more about your beginners mistakes too..... I have had fish get sick and/or die mysteriously but I have also accidentally killed fish...... My daughter is very supportive but she made a joke that was hilarious saying she was going to put a sign on the aquarium ______ days since last accident like at a factory..... I love your channel and you are the BOMB..... Thanks so much Jennie

Hey, Jennifer! My goldfish just had dropsy and we cured her with a 1% salinity epsom salt bath for 5 minutes and then put her in a 78° quarantine tank (we slowly raised the temp) with Seachum KanaPlex. We dosed her every other day with the KanaPlex coupled with an 80% water change. She was just added back into the main tank and is doing well. I hope this helps! Never lose hope!

Hello I have quite a few Goldfish (Fancy and Comet). I bought these fish about 6 years ago, and I was wondering if there is an accurate way to find the age of my fish. I'm sorry you had a bad week. Thank you for your transparency about disease and euthanasia, it recently helped me identify dropsy for the first time (new to the hobby) so that I could let my fish go before she suffered too much. About the fused caudal fins on your littluns- could you talk more about that? How will that affect the fish as it grows?
@anonymouse53137 жыл бұрын
I had a large crop of beautiful butterfly's but for some reason they all began to die. I let my other fish fall into awful conditions, like low water in the tanks and lots of algae and ammonia. I gave up and threw out my dreams as breeding and just the hobbie in general. I discovered your channel and it inspired me to start over! I properly cleaned the one remaining tank. I only had three Corey catfish, that somehow managed to survive. I am slowly rebuilding my self esteem and fish room. I bred my Corey's and only managed to keep on fry. But I was still thrilled 😁! I know have a large tank of silver mollys an my desk as I'm typing this. They are quite easy fish but I don't want to take any risks. But I plan to keep building my stock and I'm so exited to get back into the hobbie!! Keep trying to figure everything out Jenny!!
@heathero.76437 жыл бұрын
Would the dropsy deaths have anything to do with the age of the fish perhaps? I know that as things get older (people, dogs, cats, fish, etc.) they tend to be more susceptible to disease and whatnot. I know that goldfish are able to live upwards of 25 years, but those are typically the single tail varieties living in massive ponds from what I've heard. Plus, the smaller the fish, the easier it is for it to get sick.
