How to Do Sublimation on Clear HTV Vinyl for 100% Cotton or Dark T-shirts

Sublimation has become one of my favorite ways to customize T-shirts. There are so many fun ways to do it! However, sublimation has its limitations. It requires a white or light-colored surface, made from (or coated with) polyester. Typically you can only sublimate on white shirts made out of at least 65% polyester. If you sublimate onto the wrong fabric, the dye will wash right out. How annoying is that!? And if you sublimate onto dark fabric, it won't show up, unless you try a method like bleaching for sublimation, which is super cool...but may not be the look you're going for. Luckily for you, I've found my new favorite way to sublimate onto 100% cotton shirts, AND dark fabric, too! Let's learn how to sublimate clear HTV!

How did those t-shirts hold up after a couple of washes? Do you prefer this method or the DTF method? With this method it looks like the image is sitting on the top of the shirt and with DTF it looks like it got into the fibers more. Which of these two held up better with washing?

Thank you for this video. Yesterday I done everything as on video but image looks like with white cracks but is smooth in touch. It’s look like ink doesn’t want “stick” in this places cos left on paper if does make sense. Thank you for any suggestions and advice

I haven't tried it yet, but you might be able to sublimate right onto the white Cricut HTV without the clear HTV. It works with Siser, and Cricut seems very similar in all other aspects.😊

It depends on how it is washed. Inside out, cold water, no fabric softener, dry low or air dry and no direct iron on the print.

I use sublimation htv for cotton shirts. And for dark shirts I use white htv underneath, the trouble is the white htv wrinkles a lil bit due to it being heated for too long once sublimation vinyl has been heated. I’ve also tried peeling the sublimation htv before printing then just heating for the usual time over the white htv, which comes out better but still not as perfect as I would like. Can’t wait to see if this video shows me how

Jennifer's looked wrinkled to me as well. So I can see what your talking about. I wonder if you do the sublamate off by itself first, then add them to the white vinal on the shirt last it would crack less.

The print I was printing is not a complete solid picture. I small individual pieces from the cricket. To move that to the second basic cut would be difficult? Thank you so much for all your video's, they are great!! But just a question..... I wached your video about sublimation on acrilyc. The paper sticks to the acrilyc and you have to wash it of. But what if you first press a layer of clear sublimation HTV on the acrilyc, and then press the sublimation design on top of the clear sublimation HTV. Would that prevent the paper from sticking to the acrilyc?

I know this is a video of 100% cotton shirts. So I tried this on a 50/50 poly cotton blend. Once I stick the clear vinyl over the white it looks as it’s bubbling up and once the image is on it has a cracked look. So my question is is it too high since it’s a poly blend? Or is it my white iron on (siser)? I’m just learning and you explain very well.

I am going insane, cant figure out what setting to use on my heat press for 100% cotton, i keep getting a yellowish brown "burning" around the sublimated image. Any help would be really amazing!

It sounds like you either need to lower the temperature or time or both. WE used 385° F (196C°) and the time to 30 seconds. Make sure to press the dirt first to remove any moisture. jennifermaker.com/how-to-sublimate-clear-htv/

With the clear HTV, does it still have the vinyl feel, or the design feel like a "proper" sublimated print where the ink is in the fabric? Obviously you would with the white vinyl, but I'm not sure what the difference is between this process compared to just printing directly onto printable HTV and using that?

This a great video, thank you! Its easy with solid images that you use. But how do you print and cut PNG files with transparent background with text that is not connected to main picture and has intricate edges? I just want a basic cut of the overall image, not all the intricate edges. Hope someone can help.

You would add an offset behind the words/image. Change the color of it to white and the select all of those layers and "attach". 🥰

I'm using HTVRont's white HTV transfer sheet and Makerflo's sublimation that came with my F170 Epson printer but after following the steps, peeling off the Makerflo's sublimation sheet ends up with the entire paper sticking to the shirt. What am I doing wrong?

My sublimation printer automatically mirrors the prints. In this case I wouldn’t mirror in Design space, right?

Are the press times and temperature the same if using an actual heat press like the HTVRont versus the Cricut Easy Press?

They can vary slightly. It is even different from the AutoPress 400 degrees/45 seconds, and the EasyPress 385/40 seconds. A traditional press 385/45-60 seconds depending.

I lo e this clear HTV. I try it before, my issue is when I used it on white t-shirt it get yellow around the design. I don't know if maybe I'm pressing to much.

Try adjusting the heat down 5°, you can remove those marks by spraying the area with 10:1 water/hydrogen peroxide mix and wash. That should help.😊🌻
