DIY Custom Shadow Boxes: How to Design Your Own!

Since then, I've seen many more variations on shadowbox themes and folks keep asking for MORE. But here's the awesome thing -- you can design your own custom shadow box, with just the imagery you want ! CUSTOM SHADOW BOX MATERIALS LIST (contains my affiliate links):
* 65 lb 12″ x 12″ white or light colored paper - I think 80 lb paper is too thick and won’t allow the light to shine through well - amzn.to/2XXsWMf
* Clear adhesive 3D Zots or something else to space your layers - amzn.to/2T7btNE

In order to design a custom shadow box, it helps to understand how shadow boxes work. Essentially, you stack many layers of cardstock, with each layer having different elements cut out from the center. Then when you shine a light from behind the layers, it comes through in varying degrees of brightness, creating a lovely 3D effect.
The secret is to always have three things: a FOCAL POINT, FRAMES, and a BACKGROUND.
A shadow box's focal point, usually at the center, is the element you want to stand out. It's often the silhouette of a person or people, an animal, a character, a building, or something else meaningful. It isn't likely to be large, but the eye will be drawn to it. For the best results, your focal point should be clearly defined without other layers overlapping it.
Frames are the elements at the edges (top, sides, and bottom), like trees, flowers, other less-important buildings and animals.
A shadow box's background appears behind the focal point and frames. It can be as simple as a plain, uncut piece of cardstock, or you can add extra layers behind that for depth, like a sun, moon, stars, or even a reflection.
Look closely at the shadowbox I designed. The focal point is the people on the swing, the frames are the foliage around it, and the background is the sun.
Layer order for a shadowbox, from front to back:
First layers are typically the frames, and there are usually at least two of these layers (more layers will give you more depth).
The focal point layer comes after the top frame layers.
The background is at the back of the layers.
The simplest shadow box design, and the one I recommend you begin with if you're new to this, is simply two layers of frames with a single focal point layer and a solid, uncut background layer. From there, you can introduce more elements and more layers, just be sure to keep that central focal point nice and clear.

I love Jennifer Maker!! I absolutely loathe watching any video tutorials and would rather read how to do something in an article because watching videos takes so much more time from having to sift through all the unnecessary content and irrelevant stuff. But, I love that she gets to the point quickly and is thorough with explanations. After many years of trial and error of self taught fundamentals of Design Space, Adobe Illustrator, and Canva, I’ve come to understanding exactly the little tricks and ways to make a design especially in Design Space. So, using the contour tool and slice and weld tools too, was something I had discovered by just playing around with different things and trying out all the buttons and functions and through the trial and error process, I was able to self teach everything you could do and even some difficult things on my own. But, I’m also a fast learner and have been a stubborn critic to myself all my life so learning Design Space my way was the only option since I hated watching videos and it seems as if everything is done with videos anymore. I love that Jennifer Maker also has alternative ways to learn something or a project with instructions that don’t require a video tutorial rather step by step instructions on her website. With so much competition today in craft masters, Jennifer is still at the top of this game in my book!!!

I was hoping to just go online and find designs for layered photo frame shadow boxes. I buy one for my mama every year for Christmas and put my kids picture in it. I didn’t find any premade designs for the photo frame but many, many shadow boxes. I am really not overly computer savvy, I can design things though. I am hoping to use this to design my own layered photo frame mats. I’m still in shock that they aren’t out there somewhere! I just want to try my hand at making them instead of buying them at Michael’s and Kohls every year. Thank you for this tutorial, it explained a lot to me. Thank you Jennifer. This was an awesome tutorial. I am a new Cricut Maker owner and so this was very helpful. I made a Halloween design and when my daughter (30 years old) asked when I purchased the shadow box as it was so awesome, I was over the moon excited. Thank you. Here's the new owner's question, how can I make the cut lines in the box become score lines without changing all the lines to score? I looked at your video about changing the cut lines to score, but I cannot find the layers in the box design (included in the 9 inch shadow box design) to store the finished shadow box layers together.

You should be able to ungroup the layers and then select each individual layer to cut or score.

@@JenniferMaker Thank you, I ungrouped the layers to get the box layers and frame layers all separated. But when I try to change the cut lines to score on the box layer, I cannot figure out how. There is no option to ungroup. On my computer, the box layer is just one layer. So I copied all your dimensions and started from scratch and designed the boxes. They came out fine, a score line here that wasn't perfect or a cut line that was off a smidge, but worked for me. Thank you again for putting up this tutorial. I am having such fun making holiday shadow boxes to switch out as the seasons come and go. I find you are the easiest teacher to follow!!!

Oh girl, thank you soooooo much for making this tutorial! I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE these shadow box art! .....ever since I first saw them online, years ago! I love anything i can incorporate lights in. Speaking of lighted art work, I think you should do a video on those foam core boards with an image and lights poking through the board. Example....one I've seen alot is the tower in Paris made with vinyl and lil string lights poking through as the lights on the tower. You are such a wonderful teacher and sooooo creative I just know you can come up with a much cooler lighted artwork. These are just so awesome and I never thought I would ever be able to design my own but you have taught me so I understand how these are made and the layers aren't complicated at all! It's so hard to believe you have only been cricuting for just over 2 years! I got my cricut several years ago but found myself getting way too frustrated to make much. However, between your videos and a few others have helped me tremendously helped me get through the chaos and focus through it all. Tip, tricks, and hacks are some of the best. I was so happy when I discovered how to use my character map, and a program called Fontlab pad! Cricut really needs to work on how the fonts come together in DS! It's so ridiculous to have to use a separate program just to write! I would love it if you could do a tutorial on fontlab pad, and how to use the character map in the computer. Sooooo many crafters do not know about those and you have a rather large following and could reach alot of people. I am trying to get my ADD under control so I can start doing some tutorials and reg. videos on KZbin because I'm a jack of many trades and could really do some interesting, fun, silly, and informative content. Not to mention my son (almost 13) has been dying to start a youtube channel, oh dear, lol! Thx again! Happy new year

You can use this same tutorial, Karen! Just find a sloth outline online by googling "sloth" and insert it into my Design Space template where you would like it to be! 😀

Hi Jennifer. This is the best how to video I’ve found. Explains it perfectly. Thank you. I do have a question about the actual process of putting it all together. I would love to see a video that shows step by step of adding the light strip. I read they are cut-able but what happens to the rest of the strip. Great video. I'd like to make my own 3d cards (pop ups or tunnel cards) and this is a very similar principal. I'd love to see a video about all the different methods to assemble those, like notches/slits, accordion style, etc. and which you think works better.

You and your video tutorials, especially this one are SO AWESOME, however, just a little friendly piece of advice...you are very detailed with showing us how to design/create each layer but, when it came to the arranging them you went WAY to fast and I was really confused with how you taped on the reflection and the copy paper rectangle. I had to keep rewinding and pause it. And I know that I am a newbie but, you skipped over the printing portion so, do I load each cardstock piece separately for cutting or all together and when it's finished with each layer it will push it out like a printer? Thank you so very much for making these videos & being so sweet! p.s Your voice is SOOOO soothing, you should think about doing meditation audio KZbin videos, as well! Seriously! I have an anxiety and panic disorder and found myself to be so relaxed while watching your videos! Stacie in Youngstown (area), Ohio
