Good day! I realize it's rather late to be posting Game of Thrones content so long after its...controversial finale, but this song is so gorgeous, and I've always wanted to sing it.
I'm working on several new Bardcore covers, but I'm also keen to sing some songs from various TV shows and Games. If you have any particular requests, feel free to comment below.
The Art:
Horae ad usum romanum. 1475-1600, Bibliothèque nationale de France.
Saint Jerome in his Study, Antonello da Messina about 1475, © The National Gallery, London
Lyrics:
High in the halls of the kings who are gone
Jenny would dance with her ghosts
The ones she had lost and the ones she had found
And the ones who had loved her the most
The ones who'd been gone for so very long
She could not remember their names
They spun her around on the damp old stones
Spun away all her sorrow and pain
And she never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
Never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
They danced through the day and into the night
Through the snow that swept through the hall
From winter to summer and winter again
'Til the walls did crumble and fall
And she never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
Never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
And she never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
Never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
High in the halls of the kings who are gone
Jenny would dance with her ghosts
The ones she had lost and the ones she had found
And the ones who had loved her the most

This woman is doing God's work. Thanks to her I have a full repertoire of songs to entertain the court without arising any suspicions if I ever travel back in time and accidentally end up stranded in the Middle Ages, forced to blend in and make a living as a minstrel. Which is a very specific but very real fear of mine.

if you don’t know the story behind this song, here we go - jenny lived in the ruined castle of oldstones, which was once the seat of house mudd, a vanquished line of the old kings of the first men. jenny claimed descent from their line. crown prince duncan targaryen met her and fell in love, and they married against the wishes of his father, king aegon v targaryen. he was betrothed to the daughter of lyonel baratheon, the laughing storm. king aegon urged his son to leave jenny behind and marry lord lyonel’s daughter, but he refused. when he was threatened with being disinherited, duncan willingly gave up his titles to be with jenny, earning him the title of “prince of dragonflies”. duncan and jenny were beloved by the smallfolk. king aegon in his later years became obsessed with the idea of hatching dragon eggs (dragons had gone extinct about 100 years prior and the remaining eggs turned to stone), and the entire royal family and many others went to summerhall, house targaryen’s summer palace. but when the fires they used to attempt to wake the dragon eggs burnt summerhall to the ground, much of house targaryen died in the flames, including king aegon, the prince of dragonflies, and possibly jenny of oldstones. this song was implied to be written by rhaegar targaryen, the great-grandson of king aegon v, who was born amidst the flames of summerhall. the song describes jenny dancing as summerhall burns around her.

The show did not deserve him in the end. Not with the writers of the show saying something as baffling as "themes are for 8th grade book reports". Djawadi's music had themes, but even better, it had soul - the soul of the source material.

"Ser Duncan!" Jenny screamed after him as he ran towards the castle. "Ser, please, I can't lose you too!" Young Barristan Selmy held her back, offering what comfort he could and pleading with her to rest. Duncan heard Princess Rhaella shriek. The baby was coming now amidst all this horror and heat. The screams of her labor were echoed by the dozens of small, crumpled creatures that had once been people before the fire found them. Aemon stumbled amongst them, blinking back tears. "Ser?" he asked, desperate, as Duncan ran by. "Ser! The fire! The fire has killed him he's...oh," Aemon sobbed, "Ser, it's too late!" "Tend to the wounded!" He slammed into a slim shadow that stood alone nearest the burning castle. The Prince's wan face was almost glowing in the half-darkness of the firelight's edge. Aerys was entranced by the flames, mouth working quietly. "My Prince," The Lord Commander said, "you must go to Ser Barristan." "The stone is melting," Aerys gasped, "can you see it, Ser? The stone melts! What fire can undo stone?" If anyone but his King was in danger, Duncan the Tall may have stayed. Instead he ran back into the inferno and at once he could feel himself dying. The fire was taking the air from him. He collapsed with a thunderous clatter of plate. The white armor was turned gray and it cooked him. He saw the fringes of his white cloak, turning black with ash, glow as a embers set it alight. Duncan crawled forward, damning his great size once again. The smoke was so close to the ground now. "Dunk the Lunk," Arlen of Pennytree sighed, he was sitting astride Sweetfoot, unhindered by the smoke and looking at him with sadness, "you've gotten yourself into it now, lad. This place is hotter than all Seven Hells." "King Aegon," he croaked, "he'll die." Baelor Breakspear sat atop a black stallion brown hair black with his blood. "All men must, Ser Duncan." "From hedge knight to king." King Maekar's hard face scowled at him from beneath a black helm. "Your Grace!" Duncan crawled forward, hemmed in by smoke and ghostly horsemen. His dead had come to take him at last. Not yet! "Your Grace!" "Ser Duncan!" The voice was a squeak of fright from beyond a looming doorway of high flames. "Ser!" It was a voice that had warned him that Aerion was hurting Tanselle. A voice he knew well but had not heard in decades. He followed it. "Your Grace!" The sound of a mountain crumbling and a blast of heat drove all thoughts of ceremony for his mind. When he yelled next his voice was a hoarse and cracked like he was a young man again. "Egg!" Dunk yelled. "Egg, tell me where you are!" He saw someone on the ground and pulled himself forward. The thing was small as a boy and hairless. As he'd been at Ashford Meadow. Just a tiny child getting in over his head again. "Egg, I'm here. Egg, get up we have to go..." Stone cracked overhead like the chuckling of a dark god. Dunk saw the roof giving way. The stone was melting, as Aerys had said. It would fall on his king. He covered Egg with his body and hefted his shield. The smoke was inside him body, mind, and soul. He tried to remember the shield prayer...but it was so hazy. Hard to think. "Egg," he gasped, "Egg. I'm here. I'm here..." Dunk whispered to his squire as the flames roared in triumph and ceiling fell. Summerhall crumbled inwards, defeated by the fire at last. Outside, the fire rose up in three long columns of snaking smoke. Rhaegar Targaryen took his first breath of smoke-filled air and his little cries joined with Jenny's mournful sobs.

Stunning. I don't do the whole "better than the original" thing on covers/adaptations (feels crass), but I have to make an exception here. It's not just your stunning and amazingly clear voice. It's the whole combination with the subtle medieval instrumentation, singular voice, consistent but gradually rising amplitude, and thoughtful use of silence. It's an emotional masterpiece.

This song originally had a medieval (sort of) setting. Hearing it sung in a traditional medieval style just adds to the song's plaintive, melancholy tone. Well done.

I’d first like to acknowledge that the statement is obviously meant as a complement. If we’re being literal though, I have produced hot steaming turds that were better than the last season of GOT. That is a fairly low bar to beat.
