In 1996, we went to Achill Island and hiked out to Achill Head. We hiked out on the head until the path was very treacherous and falling either side would be catastrophic. So, we picnicked overlooking Croaghaun and its huge cliff. On returning to Westport, we stopped on the island for Irish sweaters to bring back to family. The proprietor asked where we had been. Then he asked if we could see Croaghaun. We said yes, because it was a cloudless day. He told us he had never been able to see the top, normally shrouded in clouds. We considered ourselves blessed by extreme dumb luck.
@craven53282 жыл бұрын
I have a distant cousin I've visited a few times, who lives just outside of Westport, and he's driven us around Achill a few times. Nearby on the mainland is also the holy mountain of Crough Patrick - and they have a saying about it, something to the effect of "If you look up at Crough Patrick and don't see rain clouds - wait 10 minutes. If you look up at Crough Patrick and you DO see rain clouds - also wait 10 minutes.". I climbed Crough Patrick the next day, and it clouded up and cleared out at least three times before I reached the top, and probably a 4th time before I made my way back down. Still though, when it cleared out, the view of the 360 odd islands dotting the turquoise waters of Clew bay was spectacular!

It’s one out of a few good Irish movies made over the last few years. Many people who don’t understand what it is like to live on an island are going on about this incredible movie in a bad light that was so well put together with reflecting issues of living away from the world and how one can go mad to find ways to entertain oneself on a small Irish island. Congratulations to the filmmakers for once with this great blue moon in light of the list of very bad movies we are getting today. Amazing dark but funny movie. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
