Have you read any of these? Would you like to? What were your favourite books of 2024? x

Hullo Jen! Happy new year! I am planning on reading Butter soon and will probably recommend Pet to my book club. I really can't remember the last book that I absolutely loved last year. But we started January with 8 Lives of a Century Old Trickster and absolutely loved it!

I have read Enter Ghost, The Pachinko Parlour and Pet. However, my book of 2024 was Soldier Sailor. I’m a mother and a former antenatal teacher and nothing has encapsulated how complex motherhood is (for me anyway) as Soldier Sailor. I would also suggest reading Matrescence (sp?!) which gave me a similar feeling albeit NF.

@ I've read Matrescence. And probably would have enjoyed Soldier Sailor more had I not read so close to giving birth.

13:00 Ooh, that really is a good first line! I've also got at least 3 or 4 of those picture books on my TBR already, thanks to you, and this is a good reminder to see if my library has them. 💕

The Fortnight in September was absolutely wonderful. One of my favourite books of all time

My main takeaway from this is… I need to read The Hopkins Manuscript! But loved the whole video as usual. The way you describe some of these books is magic. You definitely opened my eyes to stuff I didn’t notice in The Pachinko Parlour (which I enjoyed nonetheless!)

Having just gone to my notes to add The Hopkins Manuscript… I see you already recommended it to me earlier in the year. But always good to be reminded 😅

Hey Jen! I became a mom to my son a few weeks ago. I watch your videos when I do the late night and early morning feeds as I find so much comfort in them. I wanted to know if you have any good book recommendations centred around motherhood and post partum. I’m reading Soldier Sailor at the moment and though it’s so brutally honest, it’s been so cathartic to read.

Matrescence by Lucy Jones and The Unfamiliar by Kirsty Logan - both great on audio! And congratulations ❤xx

Love A Fortnight in September so much! I think my favorite book of the year might be Sipsworth by Simon Van Buoy. It sounds very twee but really isn't in my opinion. Another cozy slice of life book about an elderly woman who saves a mouse OR does the mouse save her?? 😂 Describing it is very difficult and makes it sound like a Disney movie but it's not! I think you would enjoy it. Love the video as always!

Hi Jen my favourite read was There are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak. I was given a Persephone Introduction box for Christmas which includes The Fortnight in September. Cannot wait to get to that one. Just finished The Safe Keep. Great twist.

Adored Enter Ghost. Also Happiness by Aminatta Forma. Couldn’t take the small rodents in Stoneyard Devotional but highly recommend Woods earlier novel The Weekend. Also hugely enjoyed The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller. Now loving Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevins even though I am old and the young characters are gamers. Thanks for all the lovely reviews and suggestions.

Read The Hopkins Manuscript on your recommendation and lived it. Will read the September book soon. Favorite book of the year was Leonard and Hungry Paul because I love off beat characters, especially those who the defy the current day, or whatever this is. Read Sweet Bean Paste and the Harold Fry book much enjoyed. Also reading Richard Osman’s series.

Hi Jen, just before I started watching your video, I picked "Stone Yard Devotional" from my TBR stack. What a coincidence! Thank you for the great recommendations as always. The best book I read in 2024 was "Piranesi", loved it!

Thanks for the recommendations, have Butter and trying to get into it, and will definitely pick up the fortnight in September! Wonder if you have any comforting audio recommendations for late pregnancy into early post partum when concentration is a challenge? Most of my usual tbr feels too much 🌵

I really loved listening to thrillers - Frieda Klein series by Nicci French being my main recommendation. It does have a child abduction in the first one, though, thought it best to mention that! Other ones which are slightly easier reads and great on audio: Mr Loverman by Bernardine Evaristo, The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow and All The Little Bird Hearts by Viktoria Lloyd Barlow x

Are you saying 'menusha'?(a small or trivial details: from Late Latin mintiae, petty details, from Latin mintia, smallness, from mintus, small) That's a new word for me. Out of all the books you mentioned I only read 'Pet' but DNF'd it. My favourite reads of 2024 were 'My Year of Rest and Relaxation' by Ottessa Moshfegh, 'The Trees' by Percival Everett and 'In Memoriam' by Alice Winn.
