I think a great term to describe what you were saying about the emotional energy that goes into something like a doctor's appt is "mental load". Basically, your mental load under that circumstance is greater than Mr M's, which is draining and can be upsetting. I've used this to explain my experience of my anxiety disorder to my partner - that by the time I actually get somewhere, I've already lived the whole journey out in my mind in a million different ways. Thanks for discussing this, Jen! PS. The up-do is really cute!

Jen with you talking about how you present yourself to Drs really hit a chord with me. I had my appendix out last week and it was after nearly being sent home by a doctor who didn’t believe I was in pain, and oh my fox my discharge letter really makes it sound like I was making a fuss over nothing, when the actual surgeon who did my surgery came and spoke to me loads about all the intricacies of what he’d had to do, and he said I’d feel like I’d been kicked by two horses. And yet the ward doctor said oh you can’t be in that much pain it was a simple surgery.

I really loved this video. As someone who is losing their hair due to various reproductive syndromes. I have started to look into wigs and different extensions. Its nice to see someone else also experiment with wigs makes me feel a little less alone. I also feel for you with the process of IVF I've had a such a long winded treatment journey and I havent even started IVF yet so I send you well wishes with all that.

Jen, though I am in a very different situation from you, I have been dealing with cancer since 2006 and have dealt with some very apparent side effects. Listening you speak about gearing up for appointments and the looks/reactions from people is absolutely like standing naked in front of a crowd. I so appreciate all of your commentary and am hopeful for one day folks are more aware of the harm they are doing with the side glances and whispers. Take care, my friend.

This is such an interesting talk and helped me so much with gaining insight in myself. I always make sure that I don't wear concealer when I go to the doctor for my asthma, because I want to make sure they see that I don't look well. And at the same time, I have really learned to make them not perceive me as weak because with invisible illness and a plethora that relate to stress, you really have to advocate for yourself and your un-wellbeing in order to get help with a lot of doctors.

Hi Jen. Thanks for your videos. I realised, with the help of your videos, that I might be reading too many books about “othering” without realising it, and that it could have been retraumatising me as a disabled person with complex problems. Thanks for raising awareness about disabilities. Your book suggestions about feeling included have been very healing for me. Have a lovely Autumn. 🍁

Just starting the video but what you say about the ratio of talking about disability to experiences of disability is so true. It makes me think of a tiktok I saw some time ago about chronic pain where an able person had told the person in the video that “oh, you can tell me anytime you’re in pain, always feel free to complain, I won’t mind” (or something to that effect) and the person was like...I don’t really believe that’s true because you have no idea how often I’m in pain. And I’ve often felt that way where I start to mention something disability-related and I’m like hang on, have I talked about it too much this week with this person? Idk

I get what you mean - a fraction of it, anyway. I have what's considered mild ME (doesn't feel mild, but of course it is compared to those who are bed-bound) - almost 4 years now - and I feel like I constantly need to explain things, particularly with work. And that in itself is so exhausting. I also totally get the planning to go out - now I do it rarely, but always have to work out the pros and cons of different methods of transport, what I am likely to be able to manage - and then often I can't manage as much as I would like when I'm out and end up frustrated. It does help to hear someone else articulate it though. x

I haven't read Adventures of China Iron yet but just wanted to mention that it's a retelling/fan fiction of Martín Fierro, our national classic here in Argentina, which has shaped Argentinian literature, culture and politics since its publication. Also, I can't recommend Dead Girls highly enough. It was one of the first non fiction books that touched the subject, even before the women's movement here started fighting to get more policies and state action against domestic violence and femicides.

I'm trying to buy less books this year, but I was sorely tempted to buy some from Charco because of this video and the sale, especially since I want to read more about/from South America after reading Cantoras by Caroline di Robertis, which I adored. Right before checking out, I decided to quickly check whether Scribd had any of the titles available and it turns out there are *a lot* of Charco Press books on Scribd! Very happy to have added Elena Knows, The Rooftop, Theatre of War, The Adventures of China Iron and Brickmakers to my TBR. Thanks for the chat on disability and hospital appointments. I just had to pause to say that I'm ashamed that the NHS made you answer those questions about parenting as a disabled person, like you need some sort of license to do so. I'm really just so dismayed that this happens. Like a non disabled person has the right to judge whether a disabled person is OK to be a parent. More doctors and healthcare professionals should be watching your channel Jen. I often think about what you said at the beginning about preparing for an appt. I know that what is one of my daily appointments is something that for some people it was a big deal to book, something that they've thought about and planned, and has potentially big consequences. And I think it's good that we remember that. I'll keep watching now! Xx

We're about to have a major blizzard here starting tomorrow (like over 2 feet of snow and hurricane force winds) so I think I'll wait to dive into a book set during a blizzard. :) But I just checked out another pile of books from the library, so I am set for this weekend! You look lovely today (as always) Jen, and I'm just trying to picture you with mask, wig and eye patch and thinking that a stuffed parrot would have completed that look and perhaps kept the commenters at bay (because the parrot would have been a step too far for them). Probably not -- people do seem to feel like everyone else needs their opinions and advice despite the fact that virtually no one does. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

If you were for example interested in doing some videos about IVF and the process would you consider maybe doing a panel or group video with other women who are going through the process as well? Maybe if you had it where it was more of an open discussion and you're all providing different information or your individual experiences you would feel more comfortable. You could have a few able-bodied women as well as disabled women who are going through the process. I personally would be interested in hearing information that you have about the subject. Also, never feel like when you discuss disability or disability representation that you are rambling or preaching or on a soapbox or whatever it is that you fear you're projecting. I think anyone who comes into your space knows that this is a subject that's important to you and comes to your channel because that's something that is both interesting or familiar to them. As a chronically ill person it's very difficult to find representation within the media that are similar to experiences that I can relate to or that I've personally, have had. I always feel like I'm in a safe space when I watch your videos because I feel more seen. Thanks so much for your content Jen, lots of love to you and yours, and stay safe.
