Master MIDI manipulator Jeremy Ellis recently stopped by our DJcityTV studio to show us his new routine featuring Native Instruments' Maschine, Maschine Mikro and some seriously funky samples. Who ever said drum machines had no soul?

Jeremy Ellis sees far beyond samples and buttons as he has developed his abstract thinking about music and music theory, which has taken him to a new state of creativity where percussive sounds are tones and tones are beats, an truly rich unity of vibrations, arranged to deliver one unique rhythmic and melodic experience.

what i like most of this guy is that he has a great sampling selection, so he comes up with a great songs at the end! sometimes i dont even care he plays it live or loops it with some software, the point is he is a great musician, i'm sure he knows jazz and classic music!

incredible jeremy, cant wait to hear ya in dc next week. at first i was wondering how you got all the bass, keys and drums perfect per pad on the maschine. spent hours figuring out how to create such tight resamples onto a single pad and in the right order. then i listened to the song you sampled and was like duh...lol. at least i have a better understanding of how to create choke groups and combining multiple pads down to one.
@PFantProductions
@PFantProductions 12 жыл бұрын
I apologize for using the word "purely aesthetic" as you are correct, he did use way more then 16 pads. However, the way you could mimic this performance would be to use the 8 different groups and program all the sounds used in the performance on one Maschine and switch between groups while letting a sample chop/crash cymbal ride out to give you enough time to switch.

Not only the finger independence he shows, but also the riddim tightness! And the musical feel in it!... Madness resulted in genius!... Jeremy what happens if you play the piano? Just curious ?

Some of the comments are ridiculous. First if all, why does every comment thread have to lead to a comparison with Skrillex etc - as it is totally irrelevant. Second, Jeremy Ellis does not only "make beats" or "selects samples from the best sample library", Jeremy Ellis is a profound and extremely skilled musician who can juggle with sounds and buttons/keys while staying aware of "the big picture" in music, the one that actually touches you as it is a real piece of art. Jeremy Ellis sees far be

At 0:47 the beat swings out and suddenly becomes awesome. So fucking cool. Tell you what though, this feels like smal room music to me - in a good way - the drum machine's like a folk instrument rather than a component in a record industry all of a sudden?

Thanks for confirming! I have always thought he was using MIDI mode but in MIDI mode the pad sensitivity is off. I have tried many tweaks to get the pad sensitivity to match the control sensitivity but never got close.

I expect it's just a small loop that increases and pitch (and rate) as he turns the knob. You could achieve a similar effect in most samplers by automating the transposition of the loop up over time. The sample increases in pitch by looping faster and faster. Then at the very end he pitches it down all the way, lower than its initial starting point, so it gets so low and so slow that it sounds like it stops. Hope this was helpful :3

you cleary missed when he used atleast 12 of the 16 pads at the same time as doing a full beat with his other hand. Explain how you can utilize more then 16 sounds at once on a pad with only 16 buttons? Also how would you arrange them so that was possible as well?... I think there is a very good reason he used two maschines. 1:20 is when he starts using more pads then one maschine can offer....for reference

So many single minded people commenting this video. Arab muzik- Live performer (hip hop) Skrillex - Producer/Musician and semi-live performer (dubstep) Jeremy Ellis - Live performer and Musician (Every genre) They are all good, to different people with different interests. That doesn't mean to bash on the one thats not of your interest. Saying "Skrillex or arab muzik is better" just shows what music you like. If you don't like this, then you don't appreciate music and you're probably a trendy.
