your guess is correct. Irons performance in Dead Ringers was a tour de force that deserved at least an Oscar nomination. He didn't get one, but his Hollywood peers noticed the oversight, and IMO that's why the Academy voted him Best Actor in 1991. His performance in Reversal of Fortune was great -- has he ever delivered a sub-par one? -- but his work in Dead Ringers was out of the park and the 91 Oscar was a belated acknowledgment of that.

Jeremy Irons has great acting in Reversal of Fortune. Jeremy Irons had at first refused the role of Scar in The Lion King due to not being comfortable going from the dramatic performance as Claus von Bülow in Reversal of Fortune to a comedic role. Once he came in, however, Irons' performance even inspired the writers to incorporate more of his acting as von Bülow - even adding one of that character's lines, "You have no idea" - and animator Andreas Deja to watch both Reversal of Fortune and Damage to pick up Irons' facial traits and tics.

I just saw Jeremy Irons in the new Broadway play "Impressionism" now in previews and officially opening later in March for a limited run. He and the rest of the cast were phenomenal. His co-star is Joan Allen, who was in the last two Jason Bourne movies. Also in the cast is Michael T. Weiss who was in the TV program, "The Pretender." This was one of the best plays I have ever seen and if you will be in NY see it before its limited run is over.

Out of the nominees, this is a slam dunk. First of all, what an amazing part - Claus Von Bulow is such a mystery, alternating between cool/reserved to amoral, puncuated with asides of deadpan comedy. Irons manages to hit all of those notes wonderfully. Favorite line is when Dershowitz is warning him about getting all of the best forensic experts b/c you can't control him, and Von Bulow says "I don't care Alan, let the chips fall where they may". When Dersh tells him that's what an innocent man would say, a half smile escapes his mouth and he simply replies "I know..."
