Love buyers nitpicking about checking in a nitro lacquer on a 20+ year old guitar. Probably also the same people who pay a premium for a relic on a new guitar.

@Mike Jackson yeah, it's just such a loser thing to do. Like putting fake blood on sports equipment. If it's honest wear or dings and stuff other than damage, then that's cool. Sure, it may hurt the resale value if you decide to sell it, but most people would mind. I don't mind if you buy it new and it has some factory aging. That's totally different to me; it's just a type of finish IMO like satin or gloss. But seriously, to make it look like you've worn the paint of your new 60s strat, but you struggle to play fuckin Louie Louie is pretty sad.

LOL-I'm a guitar player from New Orleans, and I know T-chene! (I think that's how he spells it). I think he's from and actually lives in Houma, LA, and he's been around the scene for years. And that story is absolutely consistent with his personality! He's good at heart, and means well, but lacks somewhat in social skills. Plus, his business acumen is pure Cajun/south Louisiana. (which is NOT the same as the city of New Orleans). In that culture there is a general distrust of financial institutions (really any mainstream financial/governmental institution) that goes back hundreds of years. Cash is MUCH preferred to check or debit/credit card, much less Venmo, PayPal, etc. I'm sure T-chene thought Jeremy was nuts for not taking cold, hard cash for that guitar. And, I'm going to look at Jeremy's channel now!

i stopped using reverb when they tried to make me fill out a 1099 for selling used guitars.
@ZonkerRoberts2 жыл бұрын
It's not so much that they do the 1099 form but that they report the gross sale as income. So if you pick up something on Craigslist for $800 and sell it on Reverb for $1000 they report it as $1000 of income rather than the $200 you actually made. Perhaps you could work around this by setting up a legal business in your locality and keeping full accounting books and on and on. I haven't looked into this because it's far too much hassle for me (and, I expect, most people). So yeah, I've stopped selling on Reverb, too. Between this and their bigger commission fees it's just not worth the time and effort.

A few years ago, selling a Fender tube combo (not on CL, so I have his contact info, should anything go awry). Potential buyer was very interested, didn't make a counter offer, wanted to come by to buy it. I said fine, bring a guitar if you want to hear it. He shows up, wants to try it, I ask if he brought his guitar, he says, "Don't you have one I can use?" I said, "I have many, but none that you can use.". He looks at me, and says, "I have $X" which is much lower than my asking price, which he never made an offer before coming to buy it. I said, "That's great, the price is $Y". He gets mad, doesn't make another offer, and complains about driving out, that it's a good offer, etc. I said "Look, if you didn't plan to pay my asking price, you should have made an offer before driving out here." He left without the amp, and without any violence or mayhem; which worked out well since this amp is my kid's favorite amp for a few years now.

With reverb, I had the exact issue. I described and provided videos for a high end Gibson, only for the seller to want a refund a day after for the issue I explained in detail. Thankfully reverb took my side and the “sell as described” option was in my favor. I believe they’re more reasonable now but the seller fees are abysmal compared to why they used to be

It is ironic that with all the time spent with our faces against a smartphone or a tablet, we don’t take the time to read the descriptions. I have bought on reverb and eBay and there were maybe two times when the seller didn’t mention a very noticeable ding in the body or neck. The only reason I didn’t return it was because it was such a sweet deal for a very rare guitar and also because I didn’t want to pack it up again, take it to the post office and ship it back to them. I do agree tho that these marketplaces aim to side with the customer, although that may be necessary in some cases, mostly buyers will tend to take advantage of the situation.

I have a Reverend Flatroc that has the serial number written on with silver Sharpie. I believe all Reverend guitars have only written on serial numbers. This is practically worthless in case of theft. While I do like the guitar, I can't see purchasing another without a permanent serial number.

It pisses me off when people try to use reverb as the value. I've gone to buy stuff, that was still available new in stores, and had the seller try to tell me his used model "is worth $×××××" then show me the reverb ad. I always just say "do you think I don't check the pricing before I come here?" And they usually drop the issue. Nothing is worse than somebody trying to sell something they know very little about.

I do a similar business as Jeremy, but I have found the sweet spot for guitar hunting is about $500. Anything more, you get people that will nitpick any flaw, & anything less you get beginners that don't appreciate the cost difference between a Silvertone & a Mexican Strat and haggle relentlessly. I have the luxury of driving 900 miles to my job once every 3 months, so I can cover a large area & see a ton of gear that is just not available in my home area & I get to hit pawnshops and other places on the way down. You meet some very interesting people & it breaks the monotony of a long drive.

I do exactly the same thing as Jeremy by guitar is cheap so I’m flip them put the extra money in my pocket and put them by guitar I really want that I know that naturally I could just not buy in the store I’ve also had those major nightmares on Reverb and it might description I’m very clear there is no refunds this is what it is all videos everything or taken and reverb still tries to do stuff and I usually go above and beyond for all the people I sell to throw guitar strap exercise strings I’ll make sure the guitar is in perfect plan condition set up ready to go but the people who complain the scratch I never saw scratch or something of that nature wonder of just stop selling on Reverb

My Dad had an ovation 12s in the mid 90s, it was his favorite guitar of any he ever had. He was a teacher, and would play for events at his school. One day he went to get it out of his classroom and it was gone. They checked the cameras and it turned out one of the Counselors stole it to give to her boyfriend. He gave her a chance to return it without incident, yet she persisted to deny it was her on the tape, leaving her office, then returning to her office without it after exiting the school. She was fired, charged and eventually fined, and my dad never got his guitar back or any restitution.

Need Reverb advice: I just bought a used (but supposed to be mint condition) guitar off reverb. The seller did an awful packing job (little, to no padding on the guitar box for a caseless guitar) and the box was badly damaged to hell. The guitar has an ugly/deep bump that is not fixable wihtout stripping the paint, adding wood and refinishing the instrument. It seems the seller bought safe shipping, but it does not cover badly packaged instruments. Question: DO I go directly to the seller, or to reverb?
@timdouglas80222 жыл бұрын
I would always go seller first unless the situation seems sketchy. Just be polite, honest/state all the facts, and obviously don’t be confrontational or emotional, and the average reputable seller will make it right. But if the seller gets defensive, confrontational, or anything, go straight to reverb. But I think rule of thumb is to always give the seller a chance to make it right unless you genuinely believe he or she is dishonest, good luck!
@charlesbolton84712 жыл бұрын
@@timdouglas8022 I completely agree, and from the description of the incident it at least seems like the problem was just poor packing. An honest mistake that the seller can learn from as opposed to being something intentionally done with malice.
@MrDream-zm1pw2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the replies. The only hesitation that I have is reverb's own policy: "Reimbursement will not be provided when loss or damage is a result of improper, inadequate, or unsafe packaging or wrapping, which shall be determined at Reverb's sole discretion." So that is why I am debating just going straight to reverb....
