I was a senior at RHS when this happened. It happened during 2nd or 3rd period. They made a cryptic announcement and then kept us in our current class for an hour or two after it happened. They then said that we could leave for the day, which many people did, though the school did remain open. If you want any other details, I'd be willing to answer any questions, though it was almost 30 years ago so some things may have faded.

As much as the song clearly hurt the family, I hope they understand that it, and its accompanying video probably saved untold numbers of lives. I know as a depressed teen I heard that album, went out and got a guitar, and put all that emotion into music, and I'm sure I'm not alone. There's something strange about the mother, though. In an interview last year, she claims she has no idea why he committed suicide, and kind of made it seem like everything was just fine. Obviously there were clear signals of a severe case of chronic depression, and likely other mental illness. Again, I understand her pain, but Vedder's intention was good. Teen suicide was rising, and he wanted to shine a light on how devastating it can be for everyone involved. Unfortunately, this is still a major issue, and more kids seem to want to take their classmates along with them. I just can't imagine being one of those students. - Quick defense of Eddie & PJ - The article that went along with the interview mentions that Vedder is now worth $90 million. He was broke when he wrote it, and Pearl Jam has been one of the most charitable acts in the history of music, including suicide prevention. Anyway, thanks for the vid.
@HayleySulfridge5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I agree, especially with all I read here from the report about his mental illness, she seemed odd in that interview. And that came out a couple weeks after I did this video, and a few articles on the web used it, so I wonder if she is now trying to do PR damage control, since the story is coming up more and more now. He didn't even live with her, and like I say in here, a girlfriend of his called her to say she was worried about Jeremy and the mom seemed like she couldn't care less, yet she now claims they had plans that afternoon or something. Don't get me wrong, she suffered a great loss and everyone handles grief differently, but something rubbed me the wrong way with that interview. But 100% my opinion, as I don't know her and didn't know Jeremy. Jeremy's story is so important to tell, exactly for all the reasons you stated.

It's incredibly difficult for kids that are in school though because a child's years spent in school are so very long. They can't understand "This too shall pass" if they are hurting and battling depression and or bullying. Parents and family need to listen and understand what the child is saying and enduring and if it means taking your child out of the school then do it. Get them a qualified therapist and proper diagnosis. It could save their lives and they need to be heard and understood.

There is little competent therapy today. Unless you have a lot of money. But most run of the mill therapists give them drugs and pop therapy....but no real deep exploration into the heart of the matter. People who talk about suicide to friends are saying ....'I'm desperate and afraid...somebody help me.' He should have been hospitalized for a couple months at least. And then given extensive therapy...including the family. With intensive follow up.

He didn't go for therapy in the morning, according to the police report he shot himself at around 9:30am. He had been going for therapy but that day was the first day back, he'd been in iss since before Christmas and it was his first say back in normal classes. The family didn't like the fact a song was written about it, but reading the report, it seems like the reason they didn't like it was because it made them look bad. The police report mentions that the father didn't seem concerned or upset about his son committing suicide. It seems like the father used it as a way to have a dig at his ex wife, commenting if you look in the dictionary at the definition of hysteria, it would be his ex wife. I was a teenager in the early 90s when this song came out, it didn't sensationalise what happened at all and it doesn't make suicide " look cool" like the family claim in their statement. It was a really popular song, but that was more about it being by Pearl jam than because of what the song was written about.

A chemical imbalance was out of his hands, he didn’t Kno anything about it or how to get thru it and unfortunately ended up making him take his own life. That is the sad reality of the world now, if they want to do something bad enough innocent or criminal they will find a way always. It is those that are left behind being blamed for not “doing something”, sometimes you do all that you can but being put in the same situation day in and day out there is no fixing it. Bullying is very real and it isn’t just done by peers but more so by school personal, or other adults that know better. Unfortunately we all know that kids can be cruel but you don’t expect an adult to be cruel to children of all ages. I'm a grown man and own a .357 magnum, I know how powerful a weapon it is. Such a senseless tragedy. So sad. Thank you Eddie Vedder for bringing this topic to the forefront of our attention.

She probablu was. I imagine she's been trying to paint herself as 'the perfect mother to a sweet innocent angel that never had any problems when she was parenting'. She also probably blames it all on the father. Just just seems like another entitled parent to me. She'd have more reapect if she just came clean.

We usually feel compelled to try and look for some reason or a why to make some sense of things like this. Sadly it often defies any real understanding and doesnt seem to yield too many results. In the end the pain of loss does not seem to diminsh. The only thing that can be done is to try and do your best to go on and to somehow make a positive difference if possible or one tragedy gives birth to another.

As a mother, if any of my child's friends call me in concern about my son "acting strange" in my opinion that's a sign for help. What kind of mother just brushes that off in an act of not caring. If a 15 year old boy is making comments of extreme behavior then giving a note to another friend to mail. Obviously it's a cry for help. What kind of mother ignores this. What a shit bird of a mom! Sorry, but that's the mother he had. I can sense when my child is upset. It's doesn't take a phone call from a friend. Bless his heart!

We don't know about her past in order to know why she was despondent. She might have needed help herself psychologically.
@helenkeller94585 жыл бұрын
I'd like to add to my previous comment. If you are going through depression please seek help and don't be afraid. If you are in school and are the victim of bullying, stand up for yourself and if you are in a position in which you cant, turn to an adult that you can trust. Don't allow others to dictate the way that you feel about yourself. School ends and 90% of the time those who bully you are going through much worse at home and feel the need to put that off on someone else. The term "kill them with kindness" is a lifesaver at times, if you are being bullied by someone, try and reason with them when they are away from friends. It's easy to tell if they are hurting inside or just an asshole by the way they treat you when no one else is around and you may just save them from the same fate as Jeremy with just a bit of kindness. Above all! Never let another human being devalue you. Life is worth living regardless of the bumps in the road. Much love to all of you.

It really pisses me off the way parents are either that they are not responsible for their child and or try to play down their role in that. As an Empath and as a child who went through similar ignorance with my family, I can honestly say I don't trust what Jeremy's mother words or her picture perfect outlook from her side. I see her as a passive aggressive monster, I know what that looks like. Damn her and parents like her, it's so fucking sad and it happens way too often. And drugs...is not the root cause. Therefore, that was not the real problem. If you don't want children, please don't create them!! They are not there to make you look good or some shit. And the fact that the mother is doing charity work toward the issue makes me even more sick. What- she cares after the fact...and showed her good side on that tv news report. Disgusting. I can't say enough about this... Thanks for your video. I'm a "client" of mental health services and there is still so much work to be done. Parents would get more respect for stepping up to say, "yes I made some terrible mistakes..." But if they're selfish and self involved, why would they?

The other day my psychology teacher played the music video of the Pearl Jam song Jeremy. He asked if anyone knew the song... I was too embarrassed to tell everyone what the song was about so I just let the song play out. I’m a huge fan of Pearl Jam and probably the only fan in the classroom other than my teacher since he had good taste in music as well. Not only did it fit perfectly into the mental disorder and suicide unit but it was the one music video EVERYONE was into. I’m pretty sure at least half the class has never heard of Pearl Jam before (most of the class is girls I am 1 out of 5 boys). And now it’s scarred into their minds because of that one song. Good work by the way! I’m going for a computer science career but if that doesn’t work out I’d like to be a therapist and help the suicidal find better solutions than just ending their lives.

My son, Tyler, shot himself in his car in the parking garage at college at age 18 (2 years ago). I have read many of your comments and would just like to offer the perspective of a parent and a little about what I have learned about this particular child. I read that he was on drugs, stole, and drank alcohol, although he tested negative for all substances that day. According to my son's suicide letter, some are just not committed to life, and don't really feel they belong here, or see the point. My son was highly intelligent, but bullied a lot when he was younger. He never drank, did drugs, or had a crazy girlfriend (not saying Jeremy did, I'm just stating the conditions that seem to initiate suicidal tendencies were not present with my son). Tyler could've been a world class, award winning actor if he had chosen that path, as evidenced by the shock and disbelief everyone in our family experienced. We were dumbfounded. His father and I were divorced since he was fice months old, and he lived with his dad, but I saw him as often as he would see me, sometimes a lot, sometimes infrequently. We had fun when we were together and the only disagreements I can remember were about him not wanting to leave video games to come to my house for the weekend. I loved my son dearly, and admit I was not Mom of the Year. I had my problems, but if he would've let on he was hurting or depressed or anything, I would've been there for him. I tried the same thing at age 15 but they saved me in the nick of time. When I awoke in ICU to my father crying over me (he was a Marine..they don't cry) and saw pain on my parent's faces, I swore I would never hurt loved ones that way again. My fiance killed himself in 2010 and it really tore Tyler up, so I was doubly shocked when he did the exact same thing. Both of them were too good for this world, honestly, but my heart was broken by both of them in a way that I cannot allow myself to feel love like I used to. I exist in a type of detached existence where no one can get too close to me anymore...and I have a 25 year old son and a 9 yr old daughter that need me. I am a better mom now than I was for Tyler, but in some ways I am worse, because I can't feel like I did. I am.broken forever. Life can be very painful, it can seem that suicide is the only way out, but it is selfish..The damage it does to those who are left behind is immeasurable. There were many times since my attempt at 15 that I wanted to die, that life was absolutely not worth living, but the image of my stoic father crying and the pain I knew I inflicted on my family kept me from ever attempting again. Life is hard, life is painful, but I found I had to keep putting one foot in front of the other, as badly as I wanted to stop, because people who loved me deserved better, and by God I cannot hurt someone who cares for me like that again, regardless of how bad I am hurting. The minute that seems like I can't take anymore, I tell myself to try five more minutes, and when I get there and am still hopeless, I tell myself fuce more. I hurt for my son, my soul mate, for Jeremy, his family and any and all people everywhere who have lost someone to suicide or who.feel that is their only way out... you are in my thoughts and prayers every day, and I truly wish for things to become more bearable for you. No one ever told me life was going to be easy, and the pain and suffering in my own life is mainly self inflicted, but whenever I lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel or do not think I can go on hurting for another minute, I think of my dad, his tears, and how fucking selfish it is to think my problems are so huge they warrant tearing someone else's heart out. If you ever feel like taking your own life, think of the pain you feel, and imagine the person you care the most about having ten times that pai because you are no longer here, then try for five more minutes to continue....then five more...then five more, and eventually, maybe life won't seem so dark anymore and the light will slowly come into view again. Sorry for the length. I just felt I had something to offer having lived on both sides of the suicide conundrum. Take care, everyone. Please be compassionate to everyone you meet, you have no idea what burden and pain they bear...trust me, I wish I had known of my son's. I'd give anything to get him back. Peace

I just watched a video of one of his classmates and she said they all rushed to the back of the class and huddled when it happened I cant imagine the trauma it put them all through or the teacher sitting right next to him when it happened. So heartbreaking

Loved this song as a young teenager, never knew it was based in reality. I always figured it was more a parable. Thanks for the info on this, very enlightening.

Haggis Warrior thank you! So glad you enjoyed! I love finding stuff out like this, especially when it’s something as simple as a good song you grew up with

@@HayleySulfridge it was my pleasure. I myself suffer from depression and anxiety so I'm grateful and appreciative of the work you did in this video. Hopefully your video and others like yours will help someone whom maybe is suffering in silence and let them know there are people they can turn to and talk things out with.

I've heard this song many many times in my life, and always knew it was based off of a true event but never had my empathetic side come out about it until seeing this video and really thinking of the impact the song must have had on the family. As many times as I've heard it, imagine hearing that and it be a constant reminder of your real life lost son. So sad. I'm never going to hear it the same way again. Great video by the way 😊

How about some concern for the ease in which firearms are acquired? The whole scenario of bullying and school shootings needs to be stopped. The trauma that everyone suffers and for life if they survive. What incredible foresight Eddie Vedder had in creating this song and performing it so brilliantly.

Jeremy and I were probably the same age, I was a teenager in the 90's and I understand the time period, in general kids just weren't as sensitive, PC culture didn't exist (especially in High schools) If you were anyway different from the norm, a little strange, nerdy or maybe even gay that was the open invitation to relentless bulling, Jeremy fit into some of these categories I imagine. It doesn't surprise me at all that the school didn't shutdown after the shooting, the mindset would have been if you weren't directly involved its not your problem.

*****This is one very useful video! thank you so much I always had the idea of Jeremy as a very young school boy, simply troubled, but never the less, very young, probably, to realize the fatality of his decision. But now, i hear about dating girls, smoking pot, taking acid and i realize that he was actually a teenager, who's already in sync with the real world. He wasn't just a baby anymore. Although i knew he was in high school, still was a small boy for me. Maybe because of his picture in the newspaper and also how he was portrayed in the PJ's song ''Jeremy''. It was really interesting to me to hear about them details. I was around 15 myself when the song came to us in the early 90's, in Bulgaria, still very early after the Iron Curtain's fall. The communist regime had forbidden that kind of news, we also had a lot of drug or mental issues related suicides (also of some celebrities in music/art), so the info that the song is connected to the true event happening in US wasn't out, but still ''Jeremy'' was a great hit, because of lyrics, as the music as well. So, greetings from Bulgaria and carry on the good stuff.:)

Thank You Hayley for sharing this, it was very interesting and well done, I'm a little older so when this happened I was around 21-22 years old, I never realized the song was a true/inspired song about Jeremy Wade Delle. New subscriber here and looking forward to new videos.
