Saw this movie in my hometown which is 90% Mormon, surprised a Tuesday late showing was very full.... Then was even more pleasantly surprised by the audience reaction... In Idaho... with about 100 Mormons. A movie that can elicit sniffles, laughs, and finally awwws at the kiss in the last scene is obviously doing something right. Great movie.

"in a movie, a gay character's whole character is that they're gay..... And that's not a deep character" THANK YOU!!!!
@Ineptatpiano5 жыл бұрын
As a gay man, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree. There is so much more to people. It’s such a shallow inclusivity, not meaningful at all, usually people just insert a gay character for “woke” points and that character isn’t even important or relevant to the overall plot. It’s frustrating because the truth is people hone in on it hardcore, that’s why I personally don’t want to come out, because I’m single and happy and on top of that suddenly that becomes the full focus of most people’s attention. They just wanna know IF you’re gay, not what being gay is like as a human experience, not to connect and empathize. Just to scratch a novel itch.

I'm not Gay, and I saw MILK (2008) in the theater 5 times. I was obbsessed with that movie. Every single scene was great and SEAN PENN Won Best Actor that year. It was so good it made me wonder why School never taught me about Harvey Milk. Assassinated for being Gay. I want to see Love, Simon simply as a 'Coming of Age' story which I hear it's really good at. I mean I liked Edge of Seventeen and Lady Bird A LOT and I'm not a girl... so I have a feeling I will enjoy this movie. I hear it almost feels like a John Hughes movie so I definitely want to see it.

Harvey Milk was not assassinated for being gay. He was a very liberal Councilman. Dan White was a conservative Councilman who often was in opposition to Milk. White resigned his seat and then reconsidered and wanted to be reinstated. Milk, together with Mayor Moscone who was also very liberal were seen (correctly) by White as blocking him regaining his council seat. He over reacted a bit. Milk and Moscone were shot for blocking White's reinstatement, not because he was gay.

Just got back from scrolling through the comments and I gotta say, it's SO interesting how some people think that anything that isn't straight, white, or male, is considered "propaganda." @AlirioAguero26 жыл бұрын
The word ''Propaganda'' has been used improperly more often than not these days. What propaganda is - A limited and artificial point of view which is designed to glorify or demonize someone or something based on an agenda. Propaganda doesn't have any counterarguments to the narrative and serves only one purpose. So, in that regard, Love, Simon is definitely not a propaganda movie, since Simon isn't more pure or more innocent than the rest of the characters. If this was a propaganda piece, he would have been a saint, attacked because of how good he is.
@Hayden_Cat6 жыл бұрын

I showed this to my family who are conservative Christians, and they were smiling like 90% of the time and they got pissed when he *spoiler alert* gets outed as being gay. I think it really showed them that this is so much more then just "Oh, he likes guys." No, there is so much more depth to it and this movie did a solid job of capturing that. They really understood that 1.) it's not easy and 2.) coming out is for that person to do; it's his/her life, his/her story.

I saw this yesterday with one of my friends and I completely adored it. I had to read the book beforehand because I wanted to know what the book was like and I read it within a few days. It was great and I had my hopes very high for this movie. Unsurprisingly, it met my expectations and went even beyond them. Nick Robinson portrayed the character of Simon beautifully, all of the friends were so loveable (save for the character you said was not redeemable because I totally agree on that and don’t think they were even friends in the first place), everyone acted their parts perfectly, and one specific scene with a character and his mom towards the end had me uncontrollably sobbing. okamilover99999 I'm pretty sure he hasn't seen Lady Bird since he didn't do a review on it nor have I ever seen him talk about it so just commenting that it's another great coming of age story since the Edge of Seventeen. But thanks for your reply. 🙄

I love how the movie (LIKE HOW YOU SAID) isn't just about GAYNESS! It shows that gay characters can be whole lot more than just 'gay', I also preach the movie's interpretation of the different kinds of gays (Masculine, Feminine/Steryotypical). This was an overall amazing film, go watch it!

I thought it was just alright. Some scenes were just a little too generic and goofy for me

I was looking forwards to this movie ever since I saw the commercial. It was amazing, adorable, I just so relatable. I really hope the Nicky gets recognization for this role, because he deserves it! It was super relatable, especially as a closeted bisexual. My straight friend whom I saw it with loved it as well, we both almost cried.

I can't help, but get the overwhelming feeling that this story would have *FAR* been better served if this were a college freshmen story (this argument also applies to the upcoming comedy/thriller Blocked). High school movies just don't appeal to me anymore and I'm only ten years removed! Anyhoo, the movie *is* fine and all if likely not a little hokey, but be that as it may, if the movie had more of a Revenge of The Nerds twist to it with the whole underdog usurping the jocks and winning over the (boy) I'd *TOTALLY* be down for some Love, Simon again in the future (even though, he looks more like a Caleb).

My favorite coming-of-age story is, by far, American Graffiti. Love me some early 60s American youth cruising the strip in their hot rods throughout the night, figuring out what to do with their lives after high school. Timeless classic in my opinion.

Yes of course. A LGBT movie could NEVER be good on its own merits Its Cuz them damned es-jay-dubbyas would riot if nobody liked it. Its saddens me that people actually think this way.

It's true. You can't say you disagree with anything these days, and not be labeled a homophobe, racist, chauvinist, etc. You're just not allowed to disgree with the masses anymore. Everybody's a bunch a sheep that have to follow the herd.
@baraness246 жыл бұрын
Mark-Anthony Martinez You can't 'disagree' wth homosexuality anymore than you can disagree with the color of a person's skin. So I'm failing to see your point.

My favourite recent coming-of-age film is 'Me and Earl and the Dying Girl', in which I'm also looking forward to seeking Olivia Cooke in 'Ready Player One'.

I didn't like the movie as much as Edge of Seventeen. It didn't really have that much drama in it. The story just felt by the numbers for the most part. I love the message of Love Is Love, but it felt like his life was so good and so normal except for the fact that he was gay. Am I the only one that sees this. Plus, that ending. SPOILERS! WHY THE FUCK DID EVERYONE HAVE TO BE THERE WITH HIM!? It's supposed to be a moment with him and his significant other, no one else. Why the fuck did everyone have to be there cheering him on? It made no fucking sense and was so unrealistic. I don't like this movie and I have no idea why people like it. Maybe just because there is a gay character, but if you like it l, good for you.
@garretneal18756 жыл бұрын
Personally, from the trailers I expected this movie to be extremely cheesy as many teen romances are, so that ending (and many of the other "by the numbers" parts) was kind of exactly what I wanted. There was definitely a part of me that was like, "is this really something the whole school needs to be there for?" though. I thought this movie was a shining example of a teen romcom, but it's not going to change the game or anything like that.
@mikeyf22566 жыл бұрын
I mean, does he have to have a ridiculously hard life? He's a normal teenager, and for normal teenagers problems with identity can feel larger than life. And I just took everyone being there as a comment on social media culture, with everyone wanting to capture the "awww moment" to post about (maybe I'm reading too much into that)
@garretneal18756 жыл бұрын
Well, they even had that one chick pull her phone out a specifically showed her filming it, so I don't think that is that much of a stretch.
@cinemacola63986 жыл бұрын
Mikey Fine But they even show one person pulling out her phone and the freind telling her to put it away, so that doesn't make much sense. Also, teenagers go through drama on a daily basis no matter what it is. They could have captured that more. It felt too much like a coming of age story I've seen a ton of times that Hollywood produces. It didn't feel natural or in the moment.

This movie isn't similar to edge of Seventeen. Lady bird is a more appropriate film to compare to that.
