I lost a friend who was a talented lawyer because of this car. He had an accident while sitting in the back seat and a fire broke out, but he could not escape. He probably couldn't open the door, but since the fire started in the front of the car, escape through the front seat was impossible.

Another thing they should be telling ALL New owners is that the charge port WILL NOT come out of the vehicle if Vehicle is locked. ****SO AFTER CHARGING MAKE SURE YOU UNLOCK THE VEHICLE FIRST, THEN REMOVE CHARGE PORT...******

Now crawl into the back unhook your 6 month old's car seat and crawl back over the seat to the front, in an emergency, well the car is on fire. It's interesting that they did not come up with a way to pull the wing doors open without having to remove a panel. It's kind of cheap of them to do that, but at least it's an easy way to get in there as long as you have a way to open those panels. I guess that's the price of having the engineering for those doors while also having some way of opening them without power.

Regardless of if it's a tesla, another car, boat, plane, etc, you should always know how to exit your vehicle in various emergencies. Also in that emergency, the important part is to never give up.

who knows a situation where you wouldn't be able to climb to the front? you know a car accident where someone could be in the front seats (likely if you're in the back seats for some reason) or the accident could be bad enough that the person in the front is stuck (i've seen where people get trapped in the front seat in accidents before). The back door opening method is admittedly dumb though

“Best doors”. Sure if your not on fire already, or whatever and you got all the time in the world. Idk my all doors work even if my car decides to grenade itself and everything stops working all at same time. Just pull the handle and if my car didn’t self unlock, pull handle again and door comes open.. What Tesla should have done to all their doors here is make it manual like every normal car with sensor, so when pop it from the handle the electronic instantly take over and do their magic but if the car dies suddenly, not WASTING A LIFE TIME fighting with speaker grills and panels. Just pull and push out and up or whatever misery that is. I’m sure they could reinvested that manual latch to work remotely without compromising safety like they did here.. WTF tesla

You'd only be able to open the doors if theyre mechanical. All Tesla doors, and a lot of Mercedes and all Lucid doors have electronic opening even from the outside. Only from the interior might you open the door if the 12 V battery is dead

What's my other option? A simple car door that doesn't rely on electronics and unfamiliar designs to operate. Your example of kid opening the door on a highway at 70mph is bogus. If you have kids, then you get to be responsible for the use of a child-lock mechanism on the door if necessary. Mini-vans have had easily opened doors for decades and it hasn't been an issue. If anything, I think a child is more likely to find that hidden panel and be curious what's behind it, as kids are wont to do. It's a bad idea to hide it from them, you're better off teaching them about it. Once again, Tesla ignores decades of hard learned engineering lessons in favor of looking cool. That pull cord should have a glowing handle/tag on it and the panel should be clearly marked and colored to draw attention and have pictogram instructions on the backside. This design is a mess. Plenty of other manufacturers have made purely mechanical gullwing doors that worked fine.

My question too, manual latched with a sensor so these USELESS electronics can take over and do their “magic” would be a lot know useful in an emergency vs these stupid latches. If it all dies and your scrambling to an exit all have to do is pull and push out. Don’t have to dig through your door panels let’s just make up a worst case scenario, your model X or whatever dies fully at side of the road and window half way down and someone throws a Molotov inside… at-least in a normal car you can get out of that death trap.

@@theadventureinsider at least my door on my volvo shitbox is infinitely reliable as a door. I don’t need a battery at any point. Here’s a non exhaustive list of why my shitbox has a better door: Inside: pull handle once if car is unlocked. Twice if car is locked. Battery or not. Outside: unlocked, pull once. Locked, slightly pull handle half way, insert key into little slot all the way, pull handle rest of way. Battery or not If handle is missing or broke some other way pull off matching cover next to where handle would be if still there, insert key, twist pull using key as a handle. Battery or not If inside and all systems fail and locked: pull handle twice and free first time unlocks, second time opens. Battery or not. If computers are so messed up they are banging on the lock 100000 time a second so no gap in time where it isn’t unlocked.. Pull twice on second pull keep it held pulled, that disengages the connection from lock motor and lock. … probably have battery if locks are banging but battery or not. the lock motor and lock are disengaged doing that.

All Tesla doors are electronically controlled. That's also the same with Lucid and I think a lot of Mercedes cars. With Tesla though you can only manually open it (basically pulling a lever that actually directly opens the door instead of telling the computer to do so) from the inside

Those aren't "gull wing" doors, just FYI. You got the right idea, but the fundamental difference is falcon-wing doors are double hinged to be able to close more compactly, as per Tesla's own patent. But that isn't the point, you do have a good point. It's right next to impossible to roll any Tesla, but you never know when the "impossible" will happen

If you are in a car crash and are severely injured you are better off staying where you are until first responders arrive, unless some other hazard is present such as fire or saloon flooding. Car companies don't just make these design choices without considering the risk to the occupants. There is a lot of data for car crashes including likelihood and consequence which is all considered during the design process.
