Took my klr 650 on the TAT in 2017. From NC to OR and back 11,000 miles total. Not one problem, it's a tank of a machine.

Great vids, guys!!! I'm 2 months shy of 70 years old and still riding. My son-in-law and I just road 436 miles of the TAT in Colorado (I live near Durango) - Trinidad to Silverton. We both ride Husaberg FE390 (the 70 degree bikes) and they were ALMOST perfect - just didn't have enough storage capability. These bikes have a plastic subframe and can't take weight must beyond the rear of the seat. But with two 20 liter dry bags and one Rotopax 1 gal fuel can we did OK (never needed the fuel!). One dry bag behind the rider / one over the fuel filler cap; one pair of Walmart ATV tank bags (used like mini-saddle bags) and one North Face zipper bag on the handlebars PLUS a 17 lb back pack, trail bike style, we were fine! AND... 5 moose near the summit of Marshall Pass!!! Thanks again for your great video blogging of your adventure and for the good, clean "family" vids. I can send links to all! Hoping to ride more TAT after I retire. Jack near Durango

The Van Buren sisters were among the first to ride coast to coast, traveling aboard an Indian Power Plus in 1916. They were also the first women to ride motorized vehicles to the summit of Pikes Peak, accomplishing that feat in the same year. Augusta Van Buren and Adeline Van Buren, sisters, rode 5,500 miles in 60 days over hazardous roads to cross the continental United States, each on their own motorcycle, in 1916. In so doing they became the second and third women to drive motorcycles across the entire continent, following Effie Hotchkiss, who had completed a Brooklyn-to-San Francisco route the year before with her mother, Avis, as a sidecar passenger. LOVE YOU ALL, NOT MY CUP OF MISERY,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,HA HA

I’m doing the tat at some point but I’m 59 have a klr and a DRZ 400 Suzuki. The klr will carry more but the DRZ much lighter. Deciding now which one to take. Here in the east the DRZ would be better no doubt but out west I’m thinking the KLR is the bomb.

Two of us are riding a Colorado section of the TAT in Sept. 2018. Both are riding Husaberg FE390s. Great bikes - 251 lbs with 40+ hp. Only problem is that the plastic subframes are made for Enduro racing, not luggage carrying! So, very light fabric panniers strapped across the seats & light back packs are in order. We live in and ride the mountains of Colorado, so terrain will not be a surprise, but 4 days of riding and great scenery will be a blast. (One of our guys rides a KLR650 and it's been a solid machine on every ride.) - Jack from Denver

If I was buying a bike today for the TAT, I would get a WR250 with a long range tank, hard knobbies, and a super light camping set up. Maybe not perfect but man it would be fun. Last time I camped was waiting for the ferry in Wellington, I found a spot under an overpass down by the train yards in between 2 big rubble skips with a sheet of plywood on the floor and my 1200 Bandit at 1 end. Middle of winter, howling wind. I woke up early and sat against the skip in my sleeping bag and wham! the plastic lid on the skip blew open and bonged me straight on the dome. No sleeping in after that. The ferry was about 7am, it was about 4, so I went and did coffee. The crossing was so rough that the next day it was cancelled. So that was fun too...

Love the videos, watched 11 in one sitting. Just a FYI, cans have a plastic lining in them, so when you heat up your soup on a blazing hot stove you’re definitely melting plastic into it. Warming it up on the engine is probably leeching shit into at the least.

I'd like to take a Honda Valkerie hahaha. Man you guys need all the camping tips the supernet has to offer, but it's kept the trip interesting hahaha. Invest in a much better tent soon, that will help alot. Carry a tarp as well. Ditch the extra tires lol don't camp within 30ft of the bikes in lightning if your on open ground, the lightning can strike the grounded steel bike and arc to your ungrounded arses to complete it's path. Loving the trip guys, stay safe

2008 KLR 650 (blue, because we all know the blue ones are the fastest) and my eldest on a 2013. We'll be in your neck of the woods in mid-September. Portland, ME, Nova Scotia, Mt. Washington, Stowe, then home. 10-20 Sept is when the cool kids ride! BTW, I appreciate your approach to making videos. It helps real people feel like real people can actually do stuff and have fun on a KLR. Camping: On skis, on the back side of Mt. Great videos guys. Planning a trip on the TAT from NC next year. Just bought a Africa Twin Adventure Sports and decking it out with luggage and stuff. I would actually like to do it on my DRZ 400, but my butt would not make it. You guys let us know how rough it actually is so we can plan better. I know most of it is fire roads and dirt roads which are fine on the big AT, but Engineers Pass looked a little tough for the bigger bikes.

Not across country but it's nice still lol One day I want to get a KLR650 or something similar.. Right now I got a trusty 1989 Kawasaki kdx220 (enduro version). Its not fast only 60mph comfortably.. But she's reliable Only bike I think would be better suited would maybe be like a Yamaha TTR series enduro.. But have a 450 or 500cc swap Have the high dirtbike clearance.. But able to run 70mph or more Anyway KEEP UP THE STELLAR WORK GUYS LOVE IT!! As for new places to camp.. Idk you guys go pretty far out.. I think I have not seen city camping tho Great channel!

Did you recover your rain fly? I have a Buell XB12X Ulysses Adventure sport. With that 17" front wheel I'd have to say no on the TAT. I have an old 1987 Honda XL600R that would fair well, although I would have to fabricate most everything for mounting panniers and racks. Although Mike's milk crate brings me back to my riding days in the 60's and 70's. I'm thinking a cargo net covering the top would be helpful. I really look forward to your motovlogs each Wednesday and Saturday. I'm in my 60's and I'm starting to dream of one last adventure like this one. Maybe on an Africa Twin. Ride on boys and Ride More!

KLR650s are a perfect bike for what you are riding. I have a KLR650 and a Super Tenere. The Super Tenere would be too big and heavy for me on the TAT, but it would be great for the return trip... It'll let you got off paved and then gobble up highway miles. The KLR would be much more fun on the TAT
