Bill Evans thought about and worked out his harmonic conception to superhuman levels. Who is to say that he did not think that deeply about his rhythmic interpretation as well? Thank you, Jeremy for drawing our attention to it as well.

Totally! I would argue that his rhythmic approach might be even more advanced than his harmonic one! I'm not truly sure how he thought about it or if he thought about it, but there's a lot we can learn from him.

great lesson, and an excellent example of taking an 'exhaustive' look at a concept. i love the moment the intellectual analysis gives way to the flowing synthesis of the ideas.

Thanks so much! I’m really interested in how Bill seems to be using so many more subdivisions than your average pianist (aka me!)

Yep the bit about playing patterns of 4/5 against triplets, I really hear that in Bill Evans, also shifting lines from 3rd triplet accented to 2 to first gives the impression of time slowing or speeding up, but still with the overall 12 feel. Sometimes easier to feel than count!!!

Fantastic. This detailed breakdown of triplet techniques is a real eye-opener for me. I can sort of hear what's going on, and I'm sure some people can just pick it up by ear, but for me, seeing it broken down like this is very helpful. Thanks!

As always you analyse the seemingly incomprehensible! I doubt Bill Evans thought that much about it. I think it's something felt rather than needing to be constructed or composed, that was part of his genius I think. I'm sure you'll agree that we absorb rhythms by listening more than being taught. That said everyone will now listen a bit more carefully.

I don’t know that notes don’t matter at all……but rhythm and shape are where it’s at!
