I used the single jig technique this past weekend for the first time in south jersey and caught my first surf keeper then the next day caught my pb at 5.5lbs. Good stuff!

Killin' it, Roger. Good deal. I was out Sunday and got 10 to 20.5" swingin single jiggalos in the back bay. Watched 1/2 a dozen other guys catch nada. It was great!

What a killer technique. The idea of a fluke on a jerkbait is just a really cool thing. I love using jerkbaits for anything freshwater like bass, trout and crappie. I’ve never really thought about trying them in saltwater especially with fluke. You definitely are on to something!!. Crushing them on that thing. Amazing video guys. Love to see it.

I really enjoy your videos. Your videos inspired me to fish for summer flounder. When using fresh water lures, rods and reels. Have you had problems with rust?

Thanks! There's not much difference between fresh and saltwater tackle until you get to truly sealed reels like VS/ZB etc. Freshwater rinse on the rods and lures, spinning reels get a more thorough rinse under tap then shaken dry/air dry, baitcasters get some preemptive grease inside the housing and clutch etc and also thoroughly rinsed and taken apart once or twice a season to relube.

Awesome Dude, We've been doing great with the fluke in the River with some Skinner jigs from the boat this past May, But since last weeks 2 days of rain most fish bugged out back to the ocean, so we're gearing up for ocean fishing now. I've only ever used jerk baits on Weakfish and were whacking them in the river with them in April. I've really never fished from the banks or surf, but now thanks to you I'm going to try the banks early next week . Also, We All Agree with You about NJ's New B.S. Regulations, While fishing in May we may of only seen 10 fish out of 75 in the slot fish size, the other fish looked to me like 33% were 15 inches and under (But Fat) and 66% in the 21 and over class. We did catch a lot in the 24 inch and over class. NJ Regulations have killed the boaters this year as most people will be coming home with only 1 nice fish, while states around us will be taking 4...

Outstanding tutorial. We typically jig with bucktail and gulp with a teaser above. This method seems very effective. Do you keep this technique to shore fishing or do you do this off shore as well?

This is a fun experiment and in the right conditions can be very effective...but our "default" fluke fishing is done with the single jig - no teaser, no jiggling - proper technique with a light jighead + gulp will yield much bigger fish on average - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gV7Ri6mpYtRngac

So cool that that one fluke chased the rising float! I was inspired by your last video with these baits so I had an hour last week and experimented w/ freshwater in-line spinner w/weedless hook/ paddle tail for fluke and it worked - they hit when it was spinning and suspended just off bottom in current, not when falling/diving. I might try Japanese blade bait for fluke next - have you tried those? Great video.

Thanks!! Yes I've tried all kinds of blade baits and lipless cranks - they'll catch...but Gulp will far outproduce...the suspending jerkbaits has been the only thing that comes close to Gulp when the conditions are right

You guys are killing it !!! After I started following you guys last year I completely stopped using two hooks for fluking. Even if I am fishing manasquan inlet when the current is ripping I only tie single dropper loop with 2 oz sinker and single hook with mullet or grub. I caught so many fish on single hook/single jig approach than multiple lures. Do you think this technique work on ocean surf ? I am going to give it a shot this weekend 🤣

Nice!!! Yes it works very well in the surf but that's when you really need to be dialed in, both in the technique and your gear. Lots of variable out front - wind/waves pushing your jig and braid around, very easy to lose contact with that light jig in the surf zone.

110s are pretty easy - #2 Decoy rings, #1 Owner Singles do the trick for 90% of the baits. I haven't found the 110 to be a huge producer for fluke, so I rarely throw it after the initial experimental phase.

Yeah it's a very nice jerkbait - responsive, doesn't blow out, rarely fouls my line...the only thing is, my freshwater bass won't touch them! But that's okay, I'll save them for fluke :)

How do you deal with an area that has lots of seaweed? Do you adjust your depth to stay a few feet off the bottom? Same question I'd like to ask about jigs with soft plastics.

The only thing you can do is 1) go as light as possible with your jig weight, and 2) always try to cast up current. You might reel in grass but generally if you're working with the current your jig is near the bottom weed-free for most of the cast - it's the line that catches weed then runs down to the jig at the end of your retrieve. Have the confidence to jig through the weed.

I would say technique is key - and focus on the light jighead + jerkshad (the hard jerkbaits is a very situational thing). Once you have the technique down, ie single light jig no teasers correct retrieve correct control of the fall rate etc, then move around to find the dense pockets of fish. I assume you're in a kayak - I've done a few kayak fluke videos in the past...the key is to use your mapping to find major structure - anything that breaks current, depth changes, steep ledges and also, if you can cover water, shallow flats on windy days - make macro moves to locate fish, don't make the same drift or remain in the same area if you're not catching or only catching shorts - make big moves to check new water throughout the day, devote half your trips to exploring and making note of date/tides/conditions etc. Develop patterns - you have a lot more decisions to make on a yak than from shore.

My goal is to get good at flounder fishing from the beach, however I find it to be very challenging around my area. I will keep watching your channel. I like your tutorials on how to use hard plastic baits. Finally something different other than buck tails and gulp.

@@YAYOSKAYAK Lol yeah the inherent conflict of posting videos yet trying not the burn your spots to the ground...definitely learn the single jig technique inside and out, once you locate fish with that 1/4oz jig + 6" jerk shad, you can experiment with jerkbaits/crankbaits etc.

Hi Roger, Looks like you are fishing and not cooking for the time being. Boy with the price of gas your making think more about shore fishing that taking out my boat, although at 77 and retired spend some enjoyable time out on the water with a retired friend of mine, like 2 kids in a candy store enjoying our time left being able to just take in the day and bs the day away. MIssed your vids glad you are posting again, you presentation is always low key and very relaxing, I tie bucktails for a friend of mine who sells them at a tackle store in NJ. Not sure if you aware but bucktail deer tails are spiking through the roof because of what is called a dire shortage, supposedly being used in industry for whatever reason. Told my freind may have to go to synthetic tail, suppose to work well but faster sink rate because true bucktail fur is hollow. Have you had any experience with the synthetic bucktails. Thanks Walter! I hear ya about the gas prices...can't imagine fueling up a boat this year, the driving around scouting and staying ahead of the fluke is painful enough! As you know we've gone away from bucktails in favor of a plain ball head jig, but if I were to guess...fluke wouldn't be too picky about the hair material. I know in freshwater bass fishing the difference between bucktail, bear, rabbit, and synthetics like marabou are huge. That's mostly bc we're fishing those jigs super slow in cold water, and the bass stare at it from an inch away for full minutes before committing. That's not the case with fluke - if the action is right, and if they can smell that whiff of Gulp juice - they pounce! Personally if I were tying jigs for fluke, I would go with the sparsest tie to expose the gulp and keep the fall rate fast, but you probably know more about fluke bucktails than I do!

Funny I purposly tie a sparser bucktail for the exact reason that everyone add gulp tails to their jigs and you want to fluke to have a good look and of course the taste of the gulp without a lot of hair on it. I have a 1985 Sea Nymph aluminum center console 17' with a 1995 90hp mariner. it is in my garage and launch out of rumson and sayreville. almost always burn less than 10 gallons so i'm not exacherating my fuel cost normally have my mate pick up the bait cost and maybe a pizza and a few beers at home, being gas doubled will ask for some help with fuel costs to allow for more trips. Will you still be using kayak once in a while also. As always thanks for insight and knowledge you and mark pass along always on the lookout for his and your videos. Stay safe , fish on ! ....Walt

I hear ya load and clear, now I wait till the following day to wash down the boat and gear, having it there in my driveway helps with the workload, having the boat always stored in my garage had kept the girl still running, lot of epoxy on the leaking rivits, but I think the garage has saved the transom, the 90 is a load of weight put hey when you need the horses they are there, famous last word to my friend who drives the boat in " Don't spare the horses ". You mean drag the jerkbait behind a boat/kayak? or casting up current and letting the lure drift in the current? Generally from shore or kayak/boat I'm casting up current - that's the most natural presentation. But if you're talking about drifting and dragging it behind a vessel...then no. I would not fish a jerkbait that way.

Go for it! But just to note - if you're snagging jerkbaits on bottom structure...you need a shallower running jerkbait. It really shines for suspended bass, if they are feeding that close to the bottom there are better options.

It seems like most of your fish were caught in one spot. I did not really see you moving up or down the beach much in your videos. Is that right? Once you find the right spot, is there supposed to be a steady stream of fish or do you find that if you fish the same spot for too long you would have caught all the fish in the area?

It really depends on the spot, some places get stacked and it seems you'll never run out of keepers, but most of the time shorebound fluking is about covering water. I found one spot years ago on the kayak - a very slight depression about the size of 2 cars - pulled 8 keepers out of there within 30 minutes. Almost seemed as if fluke were lined up outside the hole to get in lol.

Move on if it dries up, but make a note of that spot and return a couple hours earlier in the tide phase on your next trip. If it looks particularly fishy, ie there is structure that makes sense why fish would be holding there, sure - give it another few casts with a different color jerkshad but generally if you catch one fish on a bait others in the area will eat it too.

@@CookingandFishing very funny,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, of course , I agree that the technique is very important it, and with bad technique you could actually NOT catch,,, but c'mon ,,,,,, there ARE fishing grounds that ARE much more productive than others,,,, some due to over fishing , and some places are GREAT due to the exclusivity / privateness of the beach,,,,,,,, your beaches appear to be public,, just not known , that is your good fortune,,,, so that plus your " professional" technique gets you lots of fish I still say that makes you lucky,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, for example I have fished the Sunken Meadow State Park and Robert Moses,, for years and had many many skunks,,,,, and I have the technique,, I am 65 and have been successful with that technique for years in fresh water settings,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, then I applied it to saltwater and it worked just fine,,,,,,, but when on a beach with few fish there is no one to bite/ catch,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, it is conversely just due to my BAD luck,,,,, like you have good beaches due to GOOD luck

Well we agree on Skinner at least - guy fishes pristine, unpressured waters so his hi/lo jiggling doesn't really matter. But we're not making these videos out on the east end, we're fishing some of the most crowded beaches around. And sure, the location matters, but putting in the time to stay ahead of fluke migration matters more, being willing to scout and travel and find the right bite at the right time - you make it seem like we have one beach we discovered and the truth is we visit dozens every season. And whatever you think you know about jigging, there is room to improve. I've fished on party boats where I've outfished the average fare 10:1, I've also been outfished 10:1 by mates and captains. I've heard the "well I've been fishing for xxx years" over and over, well guess what? You've probably been doing it wrong for xxx years. We've rolled up to spots that are railed and no one's catching anything but shorts and robins and proceed to double/triple/quadruple limit out - the technique matters a lot more than you imagine. But keep telling yourself you've got it dialed in and it's just "bad luck" that you're stuck fishing wherever you're fishing. I told you we've caught multiple limits in the places you mentioned - does it produce all season long? No. But there are long windows when it does produce quality keepers, you just need to figure that out before crying about spots. And btw, please stop naming your fishing locations in these comments, they will eventually be deleted. We don't spot burn on this channel.
