I’ve had a couple of bronze age books slabbed that were really rough. They really hold no value, but because they were mine when I was a child I see them as the books that sparked my love for comics. I believe this is another reason people should consider slabbing and not strictly because of market or potential market value. Once again great content.

Really useful video. I'm older and have thousands and thousands of comics from when I collected floppies years ago. I've never had one graded, but have occasionally wondered which ones I might want to consider. This was a really useful video and, although as someone who likes to reread my comics once in a while it's unlikely that I'll ever put out the money for slabbing, it's nice to have some basic guidelines in case I ever decide to go that route. Thanks for putting this out there.

Well said Chris. For me...I started collecting as a kid and if CGC was around then I could never afford it, but after all these years I decided in June 2020 to do the CGC thing. I went through every book like you suggested, watched spec videos, top 10's, movie hype, FMV's, and etc....and in the end spent a bunch of money with CGC...taking about 4 months now trickling back (with CCS/CGC). Some of the books were already graded and I had them some of them pressed to see if I could get a bump (running about 70%). My collection value has increased because of this, but I would not be able to do this at an earlier stage. This was fun for me to do when buying and slabbing. I learned that my grading is more generous on my books than CGC is to me...LOL. I'm Enjoying the Journey.

Ah the first time! Yeah my first time was very anxiety filled. I've become such a better grader since then as well. I hear you about the cost. I still can't fathom how some people send books out to CGC like, every month. I'd still rather buy more comics!

Great video, I like how you talk about the many options available of the hobby. I see a lot of videos out there who seem to only value the resell and the speculation side of it. I just got my first slab ever in the mail this week. (Spawn 309 graded 9.8 by CGC) I was very excited. Will probably do the Wolverine no.1 as well. But I don't think I will ever sell them. Maybe when I die my kid will hold to them or réellement the whole thing 😅

another reason to get a book graded is for insurance purposes as well. I have an X-Men #1 that I bought years ago, and it has gone up significantly since I bought it. So I needed to insure it, simply because it's going to be tough to replace it in the condition it is in (graded out at 4.5)....so I needed to insure it properly, in case anything ever happens. Also, getting something graded where they're having their signings (just did an Uncanny X-Men 510 variant cvr, getting it signed by J. Scott Campbell...graded 9.6) if you want something signed......so there are a few other reasons as well.
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 4 жыл бұрын
Many different variables for sure. Not sure what you mean by insuring it though. Are you making that as in 'insurance' if the book gets damaged?
@MrRanman91
@MrRanman91 4 жыл бұрын
@@JernosComicsPopCulture Yeah....in case something happens to the book (fire, theft, water damage, something like that)....definitely wanted to get it insured....and so it's easier to appraise once there is a grade....then it's just a matter of pricing and then sending that to the insurance company.

i live in Florida, i sent in a couple books i spent around 100$ for total. i was a little nervous, but you don't need to worry about it. just make sure you package them up properly and don't be cheap on shipping. if you want to make sure they get there safely and quickly you should pay extra. you can also bring your books to certain reps and they will get your books to the CGC HQ and mailed back to you after they're slabbed.
@JernosComicsPopCulture

The first time I shipped out to CGC, it was like sending your child off away from home for the first time. I was literally sick to my stomach. Lol. But you get used to it. As long as you pay the extra money for every single dollar of value is insured, you have nothing to really worry about. Oh, also taking pictures of the books before they go out, because my Spider-Woman #1 that I thought was high grade came back a 6.0 with a spine fold that was not there when it left my house.

Wolverine #1 (from what? 1988 or so?). Never opened it. Bought it new, been in a box w/ a mylar sleeve and cardboard ever since. Can I justify mailing it to CGC? I’m having trouble trusting the process. Mailing it across the country. Does CGC not charge a new fee - a % of the “new”, graded value in order to mail it back?

Quick Q: if I send a book into CGC for grading, and I value it at $400, but it grades so high that graded examples are going for $3000, what does CGC do? Do they not grade it? Am I charged a higher fee? Do they bump the value up to "unlimited value" and charge me a minimum of $150? I just dont see the need for the whole "max value" nonsense when sending them a book. Thanks for any help!

only graded books i have are Swamp Thing #1 at 8.6 and Spawn 300 and 301 virgin incentive covers with the artwork by just Todd and no one else, signed 9.8s one of these days im going to go through my 16 or whatever short boxes and pull a stack that i want to get graded. and for the purposes of both flipping short and long term and just collecting. but i feel like if i'm going to set up an Ebay account i need a good stack of things to sell first, i gotta get a system going that is hopefully self sustaining. and i'm thinking if i do a batch of books at a time i'll get better rates than sending in 1 or just a few at a time. but i'm not sure how much i can afford. nearly all of the books i have that i might get graded are from the last few years. not earlier than 2016. i have some from my childhood i would do but not to sell them and not to shoot for a 9.8.. like Iron Man #200. however i got a whole lot of books that i know people would buy, and also a whole lot people probably don't care much for. i think ideally i want to have the books graded which i got at cover price and mint or look 9.8.. that are just worth the most. and yeah i haven't taken out really any of them from their sleeves. just boxed them. so the handful of first appearance that came out the last few years would seem like a good start, and some of the other back issues i managed to scoop for a somewhat reasonable prices. like the first appearance of Riri Williams and a few copies of #1 TMNT, i also picked up a lot of incentive covers for various books. some books only offer 1:10 or 1:5 on some things, like indie stuff, but regardless i got a ton of them and variants on top of A covers. i could probably fill a short box with just the incentives and one per shops etc.. many 1:25 and 1:50 managed to get a 1:100 of Three Jokers issue one, so i may have that one graded, i have all the 1:25 for batman 82-100 they are all by the same artists with sketches or whatever, i wonder if getting all those done might be worth selling as a set.. i even got a black and white of the Punchline issue. i also really like the idea of taking one of these blanks to a convention where i can get them signed or a little doodle on it with a CGC rep there to authorize it or whatever. i just hate the idea of selling a book raw and not getting all that much for it only to have someone else have it graded and flip it.. just seems dumb, but at the same time you gotta sink money into having them graded. and its nice having a system in which we gauge the books quality because that has always been correlated with its value. so to have an outside sort of official party judging the quality of the books, we can avoid getting ripped off or developing a bad reputation as a seller who potentially rips people off. plus it encapsulates the book and hopefully holds it at that level of quality. although i wonder if over enough decades, light or whatever.. if books can degrade while in a case. like the pages aren't white anymore. my plan is to hopefully tag along at a convention with my LCS guy and bring a short box with me and before the convention actually opens there is trading that goes on between the different sellers there.. so the idea is hopefully trade some of the gems i've nabbed from the last few years for a couple gems or keys from previous ages, ones worth slabbing and all that. sort of condense my collection or consolidate it or whatever, trade up a box of raws books for a couple worth way more than the cost of slabbing them. i sort of hate the idea of slabbing a book that is worth less than the fee it is to have it slabbed. like people sell 9.8s on ebay for 100$ im like yeah and you spend how much to have it graded?? like the book isn't really worth 100 is it?? the the fact its in a slab and graded is.
@bandoogiemanz
@bandoogiemanz 3 жыл бұрын
Grading is less than $30 a pop(pressing is extra.) LCS owners may offer it to their customers. Mines does. Currently, my only slab is a 9.8 Spawn 300 variant signed by Todd through cgc. I'm going to start getting more of my stuff graded. I had quite a few modern gems(many of them signed), but looks like most of them got stolen out of my garage :(

One thing I wanted to add that I found out today so maybe old news (not sure), but I was interested in getting two actors sign my "the boys" #1 and It is already graded by CGC....I saw two issues, but the one I wanted to mention is that CGC is now making you sign a disclaimer when you send in a CGC slabbed book in because of the risk of damage and you won't hold CGC accountable if your 9.8 becomes a 9.6 or lower after signing. Because of this I will pass on sending in my 9.8.

Thanks, Ty. Again, it goes back to what you want out of owning that grading comic. It sounds like you are focused on value, so first you have to do your research to see what the comic is currently worth. Check eBay sold, check Covrprice. Once you assess the value, then you can better gauge if it's worth it for you.

Appreciate the comment. This is an older video, but I think I went over the fact that it all boils down to YOU and why you as an individual want to get books graded. Ask yourself, is the value worth it? Is this one of your favorite characters? Is it a special book that means something to you? Do you plan on reselling it? All of these matter in your decision making.

I have a quick question. I received a cgc spiderwoman 1 9.0. The case looks fine it's not cracked or it dies not seem that way. I was looking at that compared too others. Did cgc ever put a sticker on the top the small one usually under the slabs on top. Do you think it's fake. I know people will go beyond it was only 60 for 9.0. which the book has dropped a bit. But I don't have any other cgc book that has just the thin strip on top under not just a sticker on the top of you understand what I'm trying too say
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there. I'm not sure I quite understand what you are trying to explain. CGC used to have a long, slim sticker label that used to sit on top of the slab, that would have the title of the book on it, so when it's in a box, you could see that information. It was on top of the slab, and not inside the slab. Is this what you are talking about? $60 is also pretty low for that book currently, in a 9.0.

I have been watching your videos, I have some questions for you. In some of your other videos you mentioned that you were buying custom cut boards from egerber. Did you happen to have 7-1/8" Fullbacks cut to use in a Standard 7-1/4" Mylites2? I am also a fan of that fit, I am wondering if you had them made, can the fullbacks be doubled up at 7-1/8"? I'm worried it might be a tight fit without the extra room on the sides of the board. Currently I'm doubling up standard fullbacks in standard Mylite2s. The result can look amazing, but i really would prefer to cut down the free space between the bag and board on the sides. With a single standard fullback in a standard Mylites2, i don't like the fit its to loose. I'm wondering about the fit at 7-1/8", and if a single fullback would be enough. Thanks for any help

Thanks for watching and for asking these questions. To your very last point, yes, the standard size full backs or half backs are way to short from edge to edge. As for doubling up full backs, may I ask why you do this? I personally would see this as over kill, and I would never do that merely because of how much it would cost. With that being said, I am almost 100% certain that you could not fit two 7 1/8 inch full backs into the standard size Mylar bag. WAY too thick. What you might want to if you still want to keep doubling them up, is to do a custom cut at 7 1/10 inch. It's a very minor difference, but it could allow for two boards. OR, you can do one Full Back and one Half back. I hope this helps!

@@JernosComicsPopCulture It does help and I appreciate it.I have been doubling up the fullbacks because its an amazing look ,in my opinion on a comic from the late 80's and up. For me doubling them up, makes up for the space left at the sides of the board between the bag. I just love the end result, its like a time capsule mini slab and looks perfect, but it does cost about 80cents per comic. (try it i did amazing spidey 314 loooks so good) I want to only use one fullback and achieve the same desired result. I think I'm going to have to order a 7-1/8 sample pack and see how it goes. Maybe with some 7-1/8 half backs, like you suggested. Its just such a pain, the double fullback looks perfect at 7" but single fullback at 7" looks like crap. I'm hoping the extra width on a 7-1/8 can give me a perfect looking book with a single fullback, but even if it does i lose the amazing double fullback look at 7" then. Comics gotta love em. If you wouldn't mind letting me know how much egerber charges to custom cut a 1000 boards, that might help my decision. Thanks again I did just want to mention i love the look of a single standard fullback in a 7-1/8 poly bag. But don't want to rebag again in future. Combo looks nice though.

I don't as of right now! It is something that has been on my radar though, as I might offer it in the near future. As for signatures, I'm not too savvy on that area. @JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 3 жыл бұрын
If I owned a low grade Hulk 181, I would probably grade it because I WOULDN"T be looking to sell it. If you are looking to sell it, it really comes down to each individual situation. If you think the book is a 3.5, but it comes back a 2.5, you might be able to sell it for more raw. So my advice would be to ask yourself these questions: 1) Am I confident enough with my grading skills to access and assume a proper CGC grade? 2) Have I done my research to see what all the CGC books sell for ranging anywhere from a 2.0 to a 4.0 (hypothetical here), if I think my book is around a 3.5, and then compared those numbers to raw sales?

@@JernosComicsPopCulture Yes I meant speculation on the grades they will get. I think were talking about different prescreens here hahah What I meant in prescreen is if you send 25 books to CGC you have the option of having the books get prescreened by CGC. @JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 3 жыл бұрын
@@50nollieman No, I knew what you were talking about. Prescreening costs more money. For me, and how I collect, it would be a waste of money. I don't have a "specific grade" that I'm looking for when I send in my books. But, I educate myself so I can be a good grader of my books BEFORE I send them out, so I know I'll at least get a grade that is in a solid range of what I expect. If I think a bronze age key will get an 8.0, and it comes back a 7.5, I'll be fine with that. The last two times I've sent in to CGC, I've been spot on with the majority of the books I sent, and off over or under by a half of grade point on the rest, outside of one book that I completely missed on.

It's actually gonna be my first time submitting to CGC and I'm really debating sending in 25 books or do a 10 book submission first. The 25 book submission is tempting because of the prescreen. I'll probably ask CGC to slab it if its above 9.0 or 9.2. Because theyre modern theyre not worth much if they go lower that grade. I really don't know what grades I would get since I have no experience but thanks to you I have the overstreet grading book coming in haha. Do you have any more tips or videos you'd recommend? That She-Hulk has no "intrinsic" value. Intrinsic means actual value in its function. The function of a comic books is to entertain young people, so it has no operational value. It is not edible, it is not of a material for construction or engineering or technology. Its sparing value is as being shredded to insulate structural space, or likewise shredded to make newsprint fragments for molded paper trays etc. Beyond that laughable misuse, it is the opposite of intrinsic, in that it is a source of pleasure or even obsession, and not a functioning supplement for modern utilitarian life.
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Joshua. I'm going to respectfully disagree with you on this one, simply because you're taking the term instrinsic value and distorting its meaning and taking it out of context. If you've studied or understand Finance, intrinsic value doesn't pertain to the value of a product's function, but rather the monetary value of an asset on the market. Intrinsic value is realized by precedent of the asset on the market. For comics, these values are easily correlated to factors that exist within the content of the comic itself (IE. first appearances, origins, 1st issues, etc.). Intrinsic value is not so much worried about future value based on external factors, such as movie speculation. She Hulk 1 absolutely has intrinsic value, because the market has valued it as a key comic for multiple decades, regardless of a She Hulk tv show, etc. If we applied your way of thinking to comics, then no comic would have intrinsic value, and should only be worth its cover price. We value comics because they are a collectible, regardless if you wish to call it pleasure or obssession, and collectibles of all sorts have held intrinsic value on the market for a very, very long time.
