One of the main problems is that the global volume is, on average, at half full volume, which end up making it harder to hear the channels.

Paul Norman... TWO WORDS! *forbidden forest* That tune scared the crap out of me when I was a teenager! It was a blast to hear it being played by full orchestra in Hull April 2019 with him actually being there as an audience "member"! =D Almost scary! I think he wasn't there... It was a ghost of our collective imagination... Whoah! =O

Is that extra sample channel present in the original 6581 or it's a newer version of the chip?
@acrouzet7 жыл бұрын
Samples can only be played back properly on the 6581 chip
@pietrotino7 жыл бұрын
Ok, but is that 4th channel present in every chip or it's a different version of it? Because I've seen different versions of the 6581 (not the 8580).
@acrouzet7 жыл бұрын
Any 6581 chip can play back samples, however I believe the volume can vary from chip to chip
@pietrotino7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's probable. I've never seen different versions of audio chips that sound the same. For example, the various versions of the Game Boy (classic, pocket, light, color) have totally different waveforms.
@JeroenTel5 жыл бұрын
It was a "glitch" in the volume register in the original SID (6581), which was actually not a glitch, but a true representation of the volume change that instantly occurred within the SID chip (which was as instant as 1/4.000.000th of a second)... The volume register set the volume of all 3 SID channels from volume 0 (silence) to volume 15 (max volume)... and when playing 4 bit samples on that volume register ($D418) the average volume went down to volume 8 (of the normal 15), but, *VOILA!*, you could play samples on a virtual 4th channel. Somehow... Commodore (who were not aware this "glitch" was being used to play samples within the soundtracks for the games made on the Commodore 64 by the likes of myself), "fixed the glitch" within the second version of the SID-chip (8580) and made the volume "ramp" smoothly to the changing volume (if it was set purposefully by the composer)... big mistake in a way, because since then, when you composed music for a Commodore 64 game, the use of samples was not appreciated, because of compatibility. A bit of a shame, but, still, the new sid (8580) is now in use as a great Synth for many modern productions, since it has a lot of advantages, filter-wise and other-wise over the old 6581... And now it's SID gold. =)
@realfamiliarfez2 жыл бұрын
i dont understand how they got that 4th channel with the sid chip, was it done through software or something?
@macstevins2 жыл бұрын
it's a "glitch" where if you change the volume register which handles all of the channels, it creates an audible click and that's what is happening, and due to the register being 4-bits, you can make 4-bit PCM audio with it
@NuntiusLegis Жыл бұрын
@@macstevins But why are the samples on a 4th channel here, and in some other oscilloscope view videos clearly including samples, there are always only 3 channels displayed?
@macstevins Жыл бұрын
@@NuntiusLegis the SID only does 3 channels/voices, so some emulators only show the 3, but there are some that do support displaying all 3 plus the virtual channel because the 4th is the master volume

@@macstevins But in the 3-channel-displays, instead of being absent, the waveforms of the samples seem to show up in one of the 3 voices. And when the 4th is the master volume, how can this not affect the other 3 channels?
@macstevins Жыл бұрын
@@NuntiusLegis the thing is that, they are emulators/displays of waveform generated, theyre going to be different interpretations of how they want to display the voices, there will be some that does the master volume bug to be displayed no matter what to the voices
