I'm glad you found The Black Cat online. I've recently attempted to upload a small selection of clips and scenes from the best Gale Sondergaard movies but every one of them got blocked, so I'm pleased to hear The Black Cat is readily available somewhere for people to watch. If "The Cat and the Canary" (1939) is there too, I would highly recommend that one. There is more story and regular drama involved in Canary (it's a better story), whereas The Black Cat is focused on heightened comedy (to brilliant effect) and it's all about the gags. I think the two movies compliment each other well. Sondergaard plays a variation of essentially the same character in both movies; more serious, moody and enigmatic in Canary and more overtly comedic in The Black Cat. I love the way she chews the scenery! She reprised the spooky housekeeper role to great effect again in the Abbott & Costello comedy "The Time of their Lives" (1946). I think she's fantastic in those three fun spooky movies. The Sherlock Holmes gag was funny. I'd only just gone through Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes movie series before seeing The Black Cat, otherwise that gag might have gone over my head. Despite the fact of (in the back of my mind) knowing he had played Sherlock Holmes I'd never actually watched any of them before, but did so recently after seeing the one with Sondergaard in (as part of my GS marathon), and ended up watching them all. And yes, it's surprising how marginal Bela Lugosi's role is. Initially the audience is led to believe his character is more involved than he is. An impressive cast all round, but for me it's Sondergaard who steals the show. I plan to watch that other one called The Black Cat (1934) with Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi soon. From your recommendation I sense it may be something special, a celebrated classic. One spooky movie I've watched this month is "The Innocents" (1961) with Deborah Kerr. I'd seen it before and it hadn't done much for me, but this time around was a complete reappraisal. After reading some background material which delved deep into the underpinning psychological angle and hidden symbolism within the movie, I decided to give it another go, and watching it again through different eyes I found it very impressive. It's a different movie to the one I initially thought it was. First time around I didn't take to Deborah Kerr in the role either, but realizing the psychological depths of the story gave me a whole new perspective on both her character and performance, and I think she was perfect in the role. I'm very pleased to have rediscovered this gem and I've now bought the blu-ray.

The film does seem to be kind of rare. Considering how many older movies I am able to find on KZbin, I was surprised it wasn't available here. However, I've found Universal to be pretty aggressive with claiming copyright and blocking footage, so maybe it's not too surprising after all. What was even stranger is that, in my entire library network, there was not one single copy. I looked on Amazon and Ebay as well for the DVD, and while you could purchase it, listings weren't plentiful. Rathbone was so good at maintaining a straight face in The Black Cat, but I think he must have gotten a kick out of that joke. One of the things I like about his Holmes is his good humor and playfulness, and while it's not so apparent here, I did feel some of his exchanges with Crawford had a tongue-in-cheek quality. It was interesting reading your revised take on The Innocents, as I also didn't care for the movie when I saw it about twelve years ago. I read The Turn of the Screw and didn't like that much either, so I guess the story's just not for me, haha. But I'm glad you had such a favorable re-evaluation. I love it when I revisit a movie and suddenly change my mind about it or recognize details I hadn't appreciated the first time. I hope you like The Black Cat (1934) if you get a chance to see it!
@Ruby_KangАй бұрын
@@Weiselberry The Black Cat (1941) is hard to find on blu-ray searches too, because it's only available on blu-ray as part of a boxset called "Universal Horror Collection: Volume 3" (4 movies/discs). I've never read The Turn of the Screw but my favourite adaptation is the Mike Flanagan miniseries "The Haunting of Bly Manor" (2020). It borrows the original characters and general template but has a brand new storyline at its core. That version is foremost an emotional love story, as well as being a fascinating and spooky tale, and it's beautifully made. It has everything one could wish for in a good drama (for me at least). The Innocents is one for the mind, The Haunting of Bly Manor is one for the heart. Two completely different approaches to telling the same story. I enjoyed the pairing of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in the Sherlock Holmes movie series, and I found it a pleasant series to sit through. I see somewhere in the comments you've recommended "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" again. Although Lou Costello grates on me a bit (a grown adult behaving like a child is hard to swallow) I did enjoy The Time of Their Lives. So I might try that one out too, along with The Black Cat (1934).

WOW what a selection! The setting for the scarecrow movie looks like the kind of thing I'm wanting to see right about now so I think I'll look it up and give it a watch. I've only seen the briefest of fragments of PPIDER BABY, but the visuals you show suggest it has a look throughout the film that I might enjoy (I'm referring to the lighting/cinematography and some of the settings). Also the Chaney role sounds intriguing. I always felt him capable of doing more than he was given a chance to do.. I'm looking forward to checking it out (I'd worked with Sid Haig many and many a moon ago, and helped Jack Hill on a project, briefly (and liked him) so I feel even more motivated to watch it, even though the kind of film I'd heard it was has made me steer clear of it. And then there's THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS, about which I'd say YUCK-uh). It is a film that is very watchable, but ONLY in a group setting with a bunch of guys (usually guys, but not limited to them) who have a bit of really good MST3 in them. And even then....it's a tough slog by the end. Oh well, at least it provided work for Tor (and there were a couple of boulders and a few yucca's that looked halfway decent/ha). Thanks for keeping the spooky stuff going through the month! Always so much fun to watch your reviews and hear your take on such wide ranging kinds of movies!!!

@RSEFX Yep, Dark Night of the Scarecrow is pretty much a perfect movie for this time of year. Oh yes, I agree about Chaney! I've always lamented that he got pigeon-holed in increasingly low-quality horror when he showed a talent for drama in Of Mice and Men and The Wolf Man movies. He played the tortured soul so well. Hahaha, yes, the yuccas at least got to do some yucca-ing! :D

Happy Sunday :) I hope all is well. Another fun day of rooting through the Christmas/Halloween stocking to see what review treats are inside, it deserves a song from Jack Skellington. Boys and girls of every age wouldn’t you like to see something strange? Come with us and you will see this, Jerome Weiselberry’s mini reviews for Halloween. This is Halloween, this is Halloween. Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Everybody is waiting for the next surprise. I’m writing out lyrics which would be an indicator that I haven’t seen many of these films lol, I’ve only seen The Black Cat and two minutes of Dark Night of the Scarecrow. I really liked The Black Cat and probably did so because it had some of the atmosphere and qualities you get from the Universal Monsters but it stands apart and that slightly different flavour was welcome during my Universal Monster watch marathon, if Lugosi or Karloff was in it I’d include it, there’s some I haven’t seen yet but I will do at some point. I wouldn’t say The Black Cat was a fantastic film but I did enjoy it. I watched a good documentary on Karloff a few days ago titled Boris Karloff : The Man Behind the Mask and I thought it was good. The 1997 version of Rebecca was on tv again a couple of days ago so I recorded it to have handy when I feel like a rewatch. I had intended to watch either Dark Night of the Scarecrow or Spider Baby today but it’s been hard to sit down and focus, it’s been one of those days, I’ve also attempted to sit and get through a few pages of a book I’d been reading and couldn’t even manage that ( Castle Rackrent ) The images of Spider Baby that you’ve shared remind me a little of the Star Trek episode - And the Children should lead. I’m sure it’s just the 60s aesthetic and it’s got kids in it lol. The Beast of Yucca Flats was on TV here a few times but I avoided it because I’d heard it was bad but didn’t really know for sure until seeing your review and there’s no opinion on the matter I trust more than yours so I’ll give it a miss lol. I’d never heard of Dear Zachary but will see it before your what else I watched for October. It seems like a rough and emotional watch so I’ll hold that one back for a bit. I remember seeing trailers for Triangle before its release and did find myself interested but never actually watched it, I don’t think it’s popped up on television. Strange and great that it’s available now on KZbin. I remember watching your reviews years ago when it was very difficult to find any films or series on KZbin. Toho released a Godzilla 70th Anniversary video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3eanHmbe8qNb68si=SQLlvGQalqHeGIze I’m sure you were aware but I thought I’d share just in case you’d missed it. Minus One will be getting a re-release with 13 minutes of exclusive bonus content from November 1st. Hopefully exclusive doesn’t mean exclusive to theatre’s. ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

@Weiselberry2 ай бұрын
Hey, you still had interesting things to share even though you'd only really seen one of the movies! That's okay. Better luck next time. :) The Man Behind the Mask seems an unusual title for a Karloff documentary, considering I don't think of him as ever wearing a mask. Heavy makeup, yes. But perhaps it wasn't intended to be a pun, ha. Yeah, isn't it crazy how many newer movies are on here? The old stuff doesn't surprise me so much, but in this copyright-crackdown era, I'm amazed how many things I'm able to find. I'm happy to be able to talk about a movie that's accessible to pretty much everyone, not just people who have a certain streaming service. If you're able to watch me, you're probably able to watch the movie. :) I did hear about the re-release and the exclusive footage. I probably won't go see it, so I hope the extra stuff becomes available later on. They've already released the Japanese Blu-ray and announced what would be included on the international release, and I don't remember 13 minutes of additional footage being listed. I must say, Toho's really getting their money's worth out of this movie! No, I was never a One Direction fan, but I was still shocked when I heard about his death. I know some people who were into them, and I'm sure they were devastated by the news. It's a horrible thing for all concerned.

I'm glad you reviewed Dark Night of the Scarecrow and Triangle since I feel they deserve more attention. DNOTS is especially good for a TV movie. I watched Spider Baby a while ago but I don't remember much of it, except it was weird. I recently watched a movie I wanted to see again for a long time - Matinee (1993) on Tubi. It's not a scary movie but it's about a William Castle-esque filmmaker releasing his latest monster movie, against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis. It's a good depiction of the time period and an amusing look at the way people reacted to schlocky movies. I also saw Carriers (2009) on DVD, about a small group of survivors in a pandemic. Apart from some moments this isn't really a horror movie either. I like it but it is kind of bleak with hard choices they have to make. And also - Blades (1988) on KZbin although the quality wasn't great - best summed up as 'Jaws...but with a lawnmower'.

Spider Baby is one unique movie. Imaginatively written. Director Jack Hill would go on to create more credits of note. I enjoyed his Pam Grier revenge double Coffy 1973 and Foxy Brown 1974. Quentin Tarantino thinks that Coffy is one of the greatest films ever made. Hill also did Switchblade Sisters 1975. Those are some tough chick flicks. Dear Ms. Weiselberry, You deserve credit for enduring any Coleman Francis movie, but I am sorry to say that there is another that is probably objectively worse: "Red Zone Cuba". Of Coleman Francis' three directorial efforts, it hurts the most and has the most bleak storyline. This week I've watched: "Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" "Brides of Dracula" (1960) "Black Sunday" (1961) "Frankenstein" (1932) "Bride of Frankenstein" (1936)

For a creepy sea saga, highly recommend "Dead Calm" (1989) w/Nicole Kidman. Re: Spider Baby -- Chaney was especially good because he loved the script so much, he vowed to stay sober during production. He was a terrible alcoholic, and it really shows in his later work.

I can watch an old spooky movie, but modern slasher films I can't do. I cannot do graphic portrayals of violence. On Halloween I watch "Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein."

May i suggest the 1942 The Cat People. Most of Jacques Tourneur RKO horror movies are pretty good. Im not sure some of your veiwers understand your taste in movies. DO NOT i repeat DO NOT watch I Spit On Your Grave. Most people will say "Why did they make this movie" very disturbing in a bad way. Have a Happy and Safe Halloween, everybody.
@Weiselberry2 ай бұрын
Haha, no worries, I won't be watching that. With a lot of horror movies, their reputation precedes them and I don't have to look them up to know I'd rather avoid them. I have seen Cat People. I haven't exactly reviewed it, but I did talk about it (and a couple other horror movies Tourneur made around the same time) in my Val Lewton video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/laCyq2aamr-dmac

@@joylederman4501 I tried, I really did, haha! I will say that if the story about the rabbit and Tor Johnson in the final shot is true, that was a nice bit of improvisation (and a happy accident) that added a touch of pathos. So... I guess there's something. :)

Triangle's cyclical plot is the real star of the film, managing an oppresive sense of claustrophobia despite much of it's setting being out in the open. The idea is being stuck in a nightmare with no ending.

Jerome seemed somewhat unsettled when talking about the film 'Dear Zachary'. Perhaps this was nothing to do with the film. Anyway, I looked at the film's plot summary on Wikipedia and it was certainly very sad and a bit unsettling (for me anyway). I think I will give the film a miss as the needless death of children is a difficult watch for me.
