I saw "The Mummy" at a kiddie matinee back in the 1960s. I remember that print was beautiful and the colors popped off the screen. The intense colors, when Yvonne Furneaux's Ananka was shown after she was prepared for burial, elicited gasps of awe from the usually rowdy young crowd.

Dear Ms Weiselberry, This was an eclectic selection of films. The comic relief cop in "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" was also the director of the movie, Charles B. Pierce. He wrote and directed two of the Boggy Creek movies, and is reported to have worked on the script for "Sudden Impact" (1983). This past week I've watched: "Europa Report" (2013) "The Invisible Man" (1933) "One Million Years BC" (1966) "Countess Dracula" (1972) "Bride of the Monster" (1956)

The Uninvited is a wonderful movie. I like the unusual mix of light-hearted, heartwarming and highly effective spooky scenes, all in harmonious balance. It also has an intriguing plot and beautiful cinematography. The three main leads are great but my favourite character/performance is the quirky and slightly unhinged Miss Holloway, played by Cornelia Otis Skinner (I love how she delivers her final speech). I too was left a little confused on first viewing as there is a lot of information to take in during the second half. How it all fits together became much clearer on second and subsequent viewings. Btw, Ray Milland reminds me of Cary Grant in this movie. I could imagine him playing the part in similar fashion. I'm not a Hammer Horror fan but I once saw Christopher Lee in the HMV store in Piccadilly Circus, London. This was sometime in the 90s. I only walked in to get out of the rain. Crowds of people were queuing up inside, there were Dracula posters propped up everywhere, then Christopher Lee suddenly walked out to greet them. I was astonished by how tall he was, he was like a giant. He was also the perfect gentleman, talking very intimately with the crowd. I was very impressed by how he conducted himself in presentation and his interaction with the people. He was informative, deeply humble and sincerely grateful to the fans there. ps. Cool T-shirt!

Great reviews, I particularly liked some of your revisits, "The Uninvited" which I think is a great atmospheric film with great lighting and cinematography throughout, and "The Mummy" from Hammer studios, I think that the leads in this from both Christopher Lee as the titular character and Peter Cushing are excellent, I also think this is one of their best. Have you seen the fourth Hammer 'Mummy' film, "Blood from The Mummy's Tomb"? I like this later entry in the franchise, it's set in the present day of its filming, which was distracting in some 'Hammer' films but not in this fortunately. Like you, I mainly prefer the earlier 'Hammer' films with a few exceptions, another being, "Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde", which I thought was a novel take on the Robert Louis Stevenson story, 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'. Have you seen and or reviewed, "The Innocents" from 1961? A film which I think gets overlooked these days, it also helped in inspiring, "The Others" from 2001 and was cited by Guillermo del Toro as an influence for his 2015 film "Crimson Peak", if not I highly recommend this superb film.

Happy Sunday :) That thumbnail is hilarious hahaha, I Just left the comment section to look at it again hahaha. You’ve had some great thumbnails and this one is now amongst those, it’s great! Strangely I’ve rewatched Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, The Uninvited and The Mummy (1959) in the last three weeks, yup. I’ve also rewatched two other Universal Monster films and two Hammer films in the last month, The Mummy’s Tomb, The Invisible Man Returns, Dracula : Prince of Darkness and The Curse of Frankenstein, they were all airing on television and Dracula (1958) is on tonight so I’ll rewatch that too or record it, it started at 10:30 and ends at 12 so it maybe a bit late, Fiend Without a Face was on before it and started at 9 lol, I just checked listings to see if there’s a Hammer film airing next week and it’s The Mummy again. I was shopping online a couple of days ago for a birthday gift for my sister and became distracted looking at lobby card movie posters and saw one for Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man and added it to my basket because I’d just rewatched it but then thought do I want this? I like the film a lot but do I want a poster of it? It’s not The Creature or The Invisible Man or even the original Wolf Man, will I buy it? I removed it from my basket and then saw that you had reviewed it again so I changed my mind and ordered it and a frame figuring it was probably a sign hahaha. They have a great Mummy one also, it’s a still of the moment the archaeologist Norton first sees the mummy and starts laughing maniacally, great moment but do I want that moment hanging on my wall? probably not. The Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man poster is a bit more wacky and fun and a little less creepy, I’ll use it as a place holder until I find a great Creature poster. The Mummy is probably my favourite Hammer film too for the reasons you’ve mentioned, plus I’ve always preferred Bela Lugosi over Christopher as Dracula, I like Karloff as The Mummy but think Lee does add something, a little more soul maybe? Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man is a lot of fun but I agree with your assessment of Lugosi’s monster, it’s not great and the makeup just doesn’t look right, Karloff’s face just works, they should’ve approached Raymond Massey lol. The Uninvited has aired a couple of times during October and it’s a really good film, it has a production quality not usually given to films of its genre, acting, direction, writing and it’s photographed beautifully. For whatever reason I never think of this film when Ray Milland is mentioned. I’m unsure if I’ve seen The Town that Dreaded Sundown before so I’ll watch it tomorrow, it looks really creepy and reminds a little of The Strangers (2008) maybe it’s just the mask. I think you may have mentioned the film before and if you have I’ve probably watched it. Pontypool is another film that looks really familiar, I was convinced I had watched you review it before but I must’ve seen some of it on TV, maybe I saw it on TV and mentioned it in a comment. Thank goodness for your movie directory or I’d be endlessly confused lol, ( you’ve already added The Town That Dreaded Sundown to the directory, amazing! :) bad or wacky movies like Pontypool can blend into each other, I watched another iffy film this morning titled The Crater Lake Monster (1977) it’s about a Loch Ness type monster that attacks a town, attacks is a bit of a stretch, it was stop-motion and looked okay at times but the end battle and the film’s conclusion made me regret watching it. I also saw Ghostbusters Frozen Empire today and it was okay, entertaining enough but will probably be forgotten after a couple of weeks. I watched a true crime film during the week titled Woman of the Hour and it was very good, the true story it’s based on is absolutely crazy. I may give Island of the Fishmen and Hitchhike a miss but maybe they’ll appear on TV someday and I’ll give them a try. Sounds like the woman in Hitchhike should’ve driven the hitchhiker to the island of the fishmen lol. Another fun Halloween selection and the switch up was very funny, the mechagodzilla shirt is awesome. ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

Haha, I'm glad you got a kick out of the thumbnail! At first I was just going to go with the picture on the left (red shirt). If I film across multiple days, I tend to use a thumbnail from the first day, and that was the best of the bunch. But the difference between the first and second session was so prominent that I got this goofy idea. :) Tis the season for Hammer horror films to be on TV! How neat that you'd just rewatched a few of these movies yourself. Those original Universal monster posters feature pretty iconic artwork (especially Frankenstein, Dracula, Invisible Man, and the Creature), but while the sequel movie posters don't stand out as much, I'd say Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man is the coolest poster of that bunch, so I think you made a decent acquisition. I saw an ad for Woman of the Hour and wondered if it was based on what I thought it was based on. I'm a little surprised it's taken them this long to make a movie about it, but it does look interesting. I might have heard of The Crater Lake Monster. Nice batch of reviews! The Town that Dreaded Sundown stands out for that awful, but effective, trombone scene. It did kind of depress me overall, though. Frankenstein meets the Wolfman is a seasonal favorite. Poor Larry; at least he kinda gets to be a hero at the end. You likely know that the monster was originally written as being blind from the previous film, so that's why Bela's gait has the outstretched limbs, etc. His evil smile when he gets re-energized is very chilling, though. At any rate, Happy Halloween and thanks!

The initial Hammer Frankenstein, Dracula and Mummy movies look gorgeous in Technicolor. The Mummy 1959 can be a bit slow paced, but has a good story and many wonderful moments. Peter Cushing was a physically adept actor and I love how he was given the nickname of "Props" due to his propensity to use.... just watch him, you'll see. One cool thing about Lugosi playing the Monster in "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" is that, at this point, the monster now has the brain of Lugosi's character Ygor from the previous film.
@capablanca4984Ай бұрын
Unfortunatly they cut out all of lugosi's dialog from the movie so it seems as though he is mute. it was originally filmed with Ygor's voice and explained how he is blind now that his brain was put into the monster which is why he walks with his hands out front of him to feel his way forward. Because they removed the monsters dialog his performance looks strange and he gets a bad wrap for his acting in this movie. It also set the president that all actors that followed played the monster in the same way with thier hands out in front of them.

Enjoyed your reviews of old sci fi/horror movies. Since you are a Godzilla fan, you may already know this (I did not until read the following interview) that James Hong provided the voices for the two lead male characters in GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS!: Character actor James Hong is perhaps best known for appearing in three classic movies. In BLADE RUNNER, Hong played eye designer Hannibal Chew, in CHINATOWN he played butler Khan and in AIRPLANE!, he played the Japanese general. One of Hong's earliest movie roles was providing both of the voices for the two lead male roles, Ogata and Dr. Serizawa, in the original GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS! Hong recalled on how he and his friend, Sammy Tong, were cast in the classic monster movie, "One producer said to us, 'We’re looking for guys to do some voices for a Japanese monster film.' He went on to say that he picked up this film in Japan. 'It’s a monster film, and I have the rights now, and I want to do the dubbed version for (the) United States.' He said he was going to patch in some scenes with Raymond Burr and some other colleagues. So they built this set. It’s the set that you see in the movie, that window with Raymond Burr looking out, and narrating all that stuff about the Godzilla. (laughs) Previously, I had worked with Raymond Burr twice, I think, on PERRY MASON and something else. Getting back to how the interview took place, the producer said, 'Come on over to Japan Town, and audition if you want to, for these voices. The pay is minimum.' I think he paid $100. So Sammy and I showed up over at Japan Town. It was a Caucasian guy that got the rights, some producer who was just at that time a nobody. So we went up to the second story - it was a big empty room, and he had a desk in the center. He said, 'Okay, I have the microphone here. Just give me a sample of what you do with a Japanese accent.'" Hong added, "We said, 'Okay, where’s the script?' He says, 'There’s no script.' (laughs) He said, 'Use THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER' (laughs) He said, 'Okay, just read THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER right here on this second column here, with a Japanese accent.' Sammy and I looked at each other: 'Oh, no script, and he wants Japanese accents.' I looked at THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER and I said, 'So let’s see now. Ah, so!' (Mr. Hong proceeds to read in a Japanese accent) I read - I don’t know - maybe another paragraph. He said, 'That’s great! That’s great! (laughs) You got the job!' Sammy Tong did the same thing. He had a broader accent than I do. (laughs) He was going, 'Let’s see.' (Mr. Hong proceeds to imitate Sammy Tong‘s Japanese accent) So Sammy Tong did his accent, and neither one of us was Japanese." Hong said in one scene, the two lead male characters, Ogata and Dr. Serizawa, argue with each other, "Well, both of those voices were mine! (laughs) I’m arguing with myself! So all those voices that I did were just thrown in there for all those characters, the young characters, and all the old men, the scientist that was pointing to the blackboard, all those were Sammy Tong’s voice. Together, Sammy and I did probably 80% of all the voices."

No, I don't think I knew that, haha! Thanks for sharing. It sounds like such a bizarre experience. No wonder I thought some of the voices in the American version had an uncanny kind of sameness to them. I believe on one of my Heisei Godzilla reviews, a viewer explained that those dubs were all done by the same tiny group of people, which is why characters often sounded so similar. But just two guys! That's nuts.

Your review of Pontypool reminds me of another movie set mostly in a radio station called Talk Radio from 1988 by Eric Bogosian. Not a horror movie but has tense moments and one monologue scene that is a tour de force. Highly recommend it if you have not seen it. Thanks

As always yr channel and the symphony of yr reviews is still the cream of KZbin 💐🏆x Whenever I. feel one video of yr voice has not been enough I sometimes just play another random one just to hear yr intelligent discourse🎉it's such a great change it feels like travelling back thirty years or more when an evening's television could be classed as adult viewing and actually of some credibility, thank you for all yr work xxx

I like that she also appeared in several Italian genre films of the '70s, like Short Night of Glass Dolls (1971) and The Black Belly of the Tarantula (1971), both highly recommended.

Apparently Curt Siodmak was quite dismissive of his work on the sequel. He called it "Frankenstein Wolfs the Meat Man". I am fonder of Screamers than most people. Probably because I saw it as a child under its alternate title Island of Mutations. Bizarrely there was a sequel in the Nineties called The Fishmen and their Queen. It recycles footage from the original movie along with sequences from some of director Sergio Martino's post-apocalyptic sci-fi films and, believe it or not, is more of a children's movie! I don't much care for slashers either. But The Town that Dreaded Sundown has some chilling moments alongside some admittedly silly scenes. I personally find the trombone murder sequence treads an awkward line between goofy and bad taste. But it's always great to see Ben Johnson and that very last shot always gave me the creeps.

Cloris Leachman picking up a hitchhiker. It's the opposite of the opening of 'Kiss Me Deadly' from 1955, where she is the hitchhiker desperately needing a ride. I wonder if the makers of this TV movie had that in mind? Since you seem to have a soft spot for these 70's TV movies, have you ever come across one that involved a woman being buried alive? I remember seeing this sometime around 1972, and being very disturbed by it. My child's memory might be deceiving me but it seems that the entire movie was her thoughts playing on the soundtrack, wishing that someone would find her. She was buried directly in the ground. No coffin. It was very creepy and I wonder why my parents allowed me to see it. It would be perfect for your spooky movie festival.
@WeiselberryАй бұрын
Oh, I forgot she was in that. Interesting. Some member of the cast or crew (beside Leachman herself) must have at least thought of it when they were making the movie. No, I've never heard of that one. I'm relatively new to the 70s TV thriller thing, actually. It was only last year, I believe, that I realized how many there are and how many you can find on KZbin, often in dubious quality. That does sound creepy, though!

That would be The Screaming Woman (1972) with Olivia de Havilland and classic Hollywood legends like Walter Pidgeon and Joseph Cotten, not sure if JW has seen it.

Richard Johnson is always entertaining to watch. "The Uninvited" is a wonderful, wonderful movie. One of the best! I LOVE Ruth Hussey, a (sadly) not well remembered actress. It is very atmospheric. Great, great time!! You've seen "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman". Here is one for you to watch, Jerome. It is called "The Werewolf" (1956) by Fred F. Sears (B-movie director of the 50s). It is very good and the approach is different than most wolfman movies. It is B&W. Give it a shot.

Yes, last October I very much enjoyed his performance as a vampire in The Monster Club. (My deepest apologies to him and his entire family for saying the wrong name.) Hussey is great in The Philadelphia Story, but I haven't seen her in very many other films. I watched The Werewolf a few years ago (October again!). I think I liked Pontypool a little more than you, but I still have the same complaints. It's one of those movies that has the potential to be so great that you get mad at it when it starts to go in the wrong direction.
@Captain3272 ай бұрын
I have to say that I also found Pontypool a bit underwhelming considering how great people say it is. I think I might check out Island of the Fishmen though, even though you found it pretty average. I liked Terror Beneath the Sea which you recently reviewed. I also saw another movie last week with a pretty decent underwater creature - Destination Inner Space (1966) which is on youtube. Here are some other movies I saw recently: Smile (2022) - kind of like a combination of Ringu and It Follows. Bad Taste (1989) - another one of Peter Jackson's humorous early splatterfests Mutant (1984) on youtube The Tomorrow War (2021) - some good action and monsters but extremely short on logic. Blood Tea and Red String (2006) - on Plex - a charming and weird stop motion film that reminds me of 'Alice' 1988. Firestarter (1984) and Firestarter (2022) - despite the recent version having some good aspects the original is much better.

You should watch and review Cry Wolf. It's an early aughts techno-thriller with a whodunnit mystery. Not too violent as it's PG13. Also, since you were disappointed by Pontypool, you can try the British horror show Dead Set. It's a zombie apocalypse movie with the main characters being contestants on the TV show Big Brother. Due to their isolation, they have to figure things out in different ways.

The last 4 films you reviewed which I have seen all of are all top drawer, I really enjoyed all of them. I disagree with you on the Son of Dracula of film obviously Chaney Jr, isn't Bela Lugosi or Christopher Lee, but I think he brings a kind of menace to role that Bela doesn't have. I actually enjoyed the film.

In "The Uninvited", that window at 04:16 in the background was re-used for the rocket tracking station set in "Monster from Green Hell". Also, the reason you thought the monsters in "Screamers" was cool until you got further into the movie is because the recreated costume for the added Corman footage actually looked better than the ones used in the euro-trash film.

Hitchhike! is a stupid movie. Even in the 70s, no woman alone would pick up a hitchhiker. No. I doubt even earlier decades would have but I hitchhiked often enough in the 70s, no woman alone ever picked me up or any friend of mine. I'll leave any assessment of any sketchiness of mine to others. However, horror too often depends on people making stupid choices, especially slasher and proto-slasher films before the 60s.
