Funnily enough, there was no Silver medal awarded for the balance beam performance. Two Romanian gymnasts, Ecaterina Szabo and Simona Pauca, tied for gold. Only two Romanian gymnasts got silver during the 1984 Olympics: Ecaterina Szabo and Doina Staiculescu. It is unlikely that Ecaterina would mention only her silver medal, considering she got 3 other gold medals. And Doina got her silver for rhythmic gymnastics.

Ceausescu is actually still popular in Romania. I was shocked to see mementos of him being sold in many places. A recent survey indicated that he is the most popular former leader of Romania.

Yes and no. Very few people actually like communism. But the political regimes ruling the country since then have been so bad (especially these days) that they make communism look good. Under communism, Romania had a very good educational system, a very strong industry with lots of very knowledgeable people, and very productive agriculture. These days kids get very bad education, there is no industry to speak of, there are almost no new experts being made and the old generation is either retired or dead, and the agriculture is similarly on its last legs.

@@CristiNeagu yes, I asked someone there about this and he gave me a similar answer. In the good old days everyone had a job, housing, education, healthcare, and there was a functioning system. Yes, there were lines for basic goods and long waits for inferior luxury items, but most everyone was in the same boat. Now it's dog eat dog, winners and losers, and many who left the country entirely. I'm currently in Bulgaria and I think this country looks much worse than Romania.
