Thanx Elaine I was at this show in Santa Cruz. Standing right in front of the stage..... Garcia tripps a fall on his face.... Parrish picks him up. Jerry ok?...hes says as long my guitar is ok I'm alright then he shredded like hell... Melvin Kahn Tutt....tore it up. 5 bucks to get in...... priceless memories....I think

Far out . Jerry hits the Cruz . Tiny venue . Caught a Neil Young w Crazy Horse there. No advertising . Came out of SC Mts. Word of mouth . Off the chart jam. Jerry also played a theater across the street in the 70’s . Thanks for this local gem . Much love.

There were lots of times during Tiger’s tenure as Jerry’s main guitar when the amps are the perfect temperature and the levels are just exactly perfect, and that tone is just… heavenly. It sounds like birds made of glass and wood soaring through a light fog over the hills of Marin County and gliding up over Mount Tam in a crystal rainbow sunrise… a skeleton on a motorcycle looks up and smiles, and bombs of flowers explode around him as he speeds up to the top of the mountain. I can smell it from here. Just listen to those solos in Let it Rock and you’ll smell it too❤❤❤

I’m here for another Johnny de Franseca on drums show.. he was so young and lost his life too soon, but wow he could play with these powerhouse dudes. This 4some made Jerry fearless in this short era of JGB. Lots of driving energy backing him up.. But who the heck was mess in’ up the board?? 😂 Thanks for these little gems 💎 Elaine. ❤

I love the Catalyst so much. What a great venue & town. Santa Cruz is beautiful. Gillian Welch lived there while she was catching all of those epic '89 shows. Listen to her 'Soul Journe' LP. There's a song that mentions the 10/17/89 earthquake & other GD touring lines.

Pretty sure that Jerry’s extended solo flight on Harder They Come , starting at 1:44:55,is up there with his all-time best. His phrases get longer and faster until the beginning of the next one seems to start almost b4 the last one is complete, but unlike so many who can play that fast, his lines never lose a perfect sense of Time and Swing. Monster solo to cap off an all-around spectacular show… AND thankfully whoever was fiddling with the knobs and sliders during the first song either calmed down or got hauled off b4 this recording became a real travesty!👀
@jimpowell67898 ай бұрын
Like you told us, like you said, this Harder They Come is spectacular. And a salute to your sharp ears catching the extra-long phrases Jerry is playing here. When he gets going its like his musical imagination is almost outrunning his fingers, but they slip into win at every turn. Lots of that here. Cheers Adam. The fiddling with knobs and sliders in the first song is the guy at the board getting a matrix mix down -- a feed to tape mixed different from the feed to the PA, which takes into account the band monitors -- so Jerry is always low in the PA mix (in a club; in a big hall it doesn't matter) -=- because his monitor is always cranked in the room. It's the keys, vocals and drums that get most of the volume in the PA mix. So to make a good tape you have to make a whole nother mix, and that always comes second to getting the room and stage monitors right, at the gig. There are some Dead SBD masters from 73 where the mix is way messed up in the first tune, but usually they had it together. Matrix mixes weren't something regular or even common at JGB shows -- to our loss.
