Good morning Elaine, this was the week the Grateful Dead retired from live concerts for over a year and a half. Thankfully it was a good week at Winterland and it was filmed for The Grateful Dead Movie ( required viewing for music aficionados).

I was there. Off night for the band with longggg tune up time between songs.

Windy/cool but sunny Wednesday here in Chicago after yesterday's heavy rain with sand-grain-sized hail. Bobby's 27th- he's 77 today; happy double-sevens, Bob Weir, possibly the finest "rhythm" guitarist in rock and roll history. This is the first of the five "Steal Your Face" concerts on successive nights at WA that were meant to augur a hiatus on the band's gigging and recording, though the hiatus did not last long. I was at the third of the five, Friday night 10/18/1974, my third and final concert seeing the Dead (I know, I know- why so few? I have no good answer). I was a sophomore at U.C. Berkeley at the time and living in the student coops, Barrington Hall on Dwight Way if anyone remembers that. All three concerts that I saw were in the one-drummer era; Mickey rejoined for the final of the SYF concerts on Sunday night (10/20/1974) but I didn't see it. John Mayer, who was Bobby's two-guitar partner in Dead & Co., shares this birthday with him; Mayer is now 47, born on Bobby's 30th birthday in 1977. The first song I ever saw the Grateful Dead perform wasJack straw in Philadelphia in 1974... Winterland.. What an amazing place... My first show June 9th 1977... There I had some of my most profound experiences over the years.. From Bill Graham's breakfast after New Year's shows... To Dead Freaks lamenting how many days it had been since the Grateful Dead played Dark Star... These guys never missed a show... a banner hung down from the balcony... Elaine... If Mercy's a business... I wish it for you... I wake up everyday with great anticipation to see what you have posted... And I am most grateful... No pun intended😁❤🎵🌠💜👽
