@TomG6263 жыл бұрын
I love you. I love you for taking our requests for this wonderful music. Jerry was so diverse. This band was what he did for fun. GD is what he did for a living. When you play for fun it “comes out” differently. If you want to travel down a hole look into his work with David Grisman. When Jerry was in his early 20s he was enamored with blue grass. Very technical stuff, and played banjo. He interpolated and brought that banjo technique to the electric guitar, creating that sound we love. If you’d like to hear something completely different than this check you “Oh The Wind and Rain”. Get the lyrics before hand. The song is from the 17 or 1800’s and him and Grisman did a wonderfully haunting version. I’m sure you’d love it. It’s a story song.

Some claim that Jerry is the most recorded musician of all time. Besides the Grateful Dead albums and all the concert bootleg recordings he had at least 6 or 10 side projects such as this and The New Riders. plus he was in constant demand as a session musician for many groups and is rumored to have done other session work in the Bluegrass genre. It is estimated that there are over 2000 hours recorded of him playing music.

John Kahn (bass) was good friend of Jerry , involved with most non grateful dead Jerry projects. Nicky Hopkins was AMAZING and used by Rolling Stones slot. Ron Tutt is the only one alive. He was Elvis's drummer. This was my favorite JGB line-up, though only together for part of one year.

"Russian Lullaby", and "Lucky Old Sun" are a couple of great old songs that JGB covered.

Hello Jamel!! I'm very happy you found your way to Jerry Garcia Band!!! So much groovy music to be discovered!!! One of my favorites is from "GarciaLive" volume 12, Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders album track "Go Climb A Mountain". This whole album is funky and psychedelic with soul mixed in for good measure. I hope you can get a chance to listen to it!!! Cheers and thanks for what you do!!

JGB wasn't about going way out there jamwise, it was truly about the song. Not one bad song in their rotation, period.

Legion of Mary in '74 was jammin'. I remember some long ass flute song that was frickin' awesome. Favorite JGB tune: 2.28.80 After midnight>Elanor Rigby>After Midnight. But I've got to say, what I'm listening to now is sick. I'm going shopping.

I was made to love her. Maybe not a psychedelic jam but a jam none the less

After Midnight > Eleanor Rigby > After Midnight 3/8/80 is some serious jamming

How I have I never heard this cut of this tune before!? That's some super-ultra Jerry improvising there, freaking prime. Nice video dude.

This is my FAVORITE JGB recording. Nicky Hopkins FTW. Let it Rock... The song... So good.

John Kahn passed in 1996, Hopkins in 1994, Garcia in 1995. Only Tutt is still alive and kicking.

Jerry just killin it with the slanky groove. Nothing like that early mid 70’s Jer.
@joeherbert75553 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness, that guitar tone. And I love everything with Nicky Hopkins on it. His recorded work with the Stones and many others just brought out the best in them. And of course, we can't forget about the great Ron Tutt - Elvis' drummer for those incredible early 70s shows, including some videos that Jamal has covered. In fact, he and Donna Jean both worked with the King on musical projects!

Oh, and you will love JGBand with Melvin Seals on the church organ (literally gospel inspired). He played with them from 1980 on. Again I am not qualified to recommend one unfortunately. In 90 at the Greek Theater, Bela Fleck sits in on banjo for Moonlight Midnight and The Harder They Come.

DUDE, Thanks for this, really. There's so much great Garcia Band material out there, so many incarnations, styles, directions. And seeing them live was just like being in church...probably even better. What turned me on to Jerry outside the Dead was the album Garcia & Saunders Live at Keystone recorded in 1973. It's pretty much American standards and some Dylan songs thrown in. I think you'r really enjoy this stuff. Especially Like A Road or My Funny Valentine. When you hear these intense, blistering solos, followed by his calm, relaxed vocals, like nothing just happened, well sign me up for that stuff.

When I listen to Jerry play anything i try to imagine myself tripping in the crowd and think of him singing to crowd and the lyrics being focused towards the crowd. If that makes sense

The opening track on this album is so good, Let It Rock. I’d recommend the Keystone Concerts which is Jerry with Merl Saunders ( keys ) John Kahn ( Bass ) Bill Vitt ( drums ) not the JGB but still kick ass and groovy.

Love seeing you truly feel the music and appreciate it for what it is. You might not consider yourself a deadhead, but you "get it", man. And that's all it takes. Thanks for spreading the love, for sharing your smiles and energy with us. You've made me smile on days I didn't think I would, and that means a lot. Looking forward to more JGB and GD reactions in the future! NFA ❤⚡💙

JGB has a live album from Kean College '80. It's an absolute ripper. How sweet it is, after midnight>eleanor rigby>after midnight, tore up over you are all great from that show. Jerry and Melvin Seals(keyboardist who still tours as Melvin Seals and JGB) had an absolutely amazing dynamic together. They made magic together.
