I had the great fortune to take guitar lessons from Jerry Garcia. This was at Dana Morgan Studios in Palo Alto, California. He taught me licks by Elizabeth Cotton (Freight Train) and Mississippi John Hurt (Sevastapol)....which was my introduction to open D major tuning. I still love that tuning. It has a fantastically RICH sound....no kidding. He disappeared from Palo Alto suddenly, and then I heard he had gone up to San Francisco with the Dead, and played at the Fillmore. That was when they became famous. He was a very comfortable guy to be with, and never critical...a good teacher! I still play those licks at my godawful age of 83 now....mainly the Mississippi John Hurt one....as I still sing and play guitar at age 83, believe it or not! However I just do folk music, not the wonderfully wild Dead kind of music. JERRY GARCIA...A GREAT DUDE AND A FANTASTIC GUITARIST!

The past year Jerry and the Dead have changed my life. I went from a judgemental, stressted, by the book kid to a all loving, guitar playing, peace and love hippie. Complete 180°, and I don’t joke when I say a tear swelled up when he said the line about having a good time and cramming in everything into one life. I can’t explain how happier I am that I changed to be more easy going in life... that one line encapsulated who I am now. All because Jerry and his music inspired me to do so. Thank you Jerry.... would have given anything to hang with you.

I was at the first shows back from that diabetic coma. If memory serves me right I think it was Dec 15th 1986(?) Anyway, the crowd was thumping and singing, " You know our love with not fade away..." The band took the stage and the drummers joined the crowd and for a moment there it seemed like we were going to get " Not Fade Away," but then Jerry started in on Touch of Grey. You see the old recordings of the Beatles with the screaming fans, at this show the Dead Heads overwhelming the mics on stage. I have never been in a crowd so loud, there were three distinct swells of the crowd overloading the sound system, it was so intense. I think the Oakland Auditorium held somewhere in the vicinity of 19,000 people, that night it was oversold by thousands. There was so much love in that room, really an incredible experience.

I don't view anything about Jerry or the way he chose to live his life a crying shame. We are all eternal & his consciousness lives on. Opiates are not an easy thing to simply quit & leave behind forever. Towards the end he didn't appear to be having much fun. The Dead became more of a family obligation. I'm not sure he'd dig the fear based matrix program & lies we've all been experiencing since 9/11, social media /smart phones and the Orwellian dystopia that's here. He got outta here just in time. It's heartbreaking to see how lame humanity has become & how easily most are manipulated.

It would have been cool to have the entire contents of the video shown or available. But let's be honest, I've seen more than a few JG interviews, and if you've seen a couple you've seen them all. There always pretty much the same gregarious, self-deprecating, happy go lucky thoughts and attitudes. Always the same cosmic reflections on life. I like 'em. I'm glad there out there but I don't have to see everything. As long as the music is out there that's all that matters.
@gratefulaya1927 жыл бұрын
i think if the dead "mostly Jerry" would have took a step back from touring as much and found some other interests he would have not started doing dope again, also i think that jerry would have still enjoyed playing as much as he did before Brent past away and Brent might be around still. it seemed after Brent past away he was not having as much fun on the stage, you could see he did not enjoy Bruce or Vince early on and by the time vince started to click it was too late. i think Jerry started to do dope again in 91 once in awhile just not all the time, and then during the end of summer tour in 94 is when he really got back heavy into using dope again. it's sad because that summer tour in 94 was going so well, musically speaking, there was a lot of pressure on him and the band though do to the mass crowds and some events that took place that year. I still feel that it was someone in the government that wanted the dead to stop touring because of what was going on and hired someone to befriend Jerry and offer him some dope knowing that Jerry would accept it knowing jerry was not good at dealing with stressful situations and knew he was already under a lot of stress to begin with. I try to live my life like Jerry did except for the Heroin and coke part,I do not smoke weed anymore but i have no problem with others doing it, honestly i rather be around people smoke weed than people drinking, drinking makes people stupid and it's much worse for your body. Also I have no issues with psychedelics as long as they're in the right setting, know what they're doing and they do not have any mental health issues that might cause them to do something stupid.

I read that Jerry had undiagnosed sleep apnea. He stopped breathing while sleeping, his heart began racing, couldn't take the stress, and gave out. I don't know if that's true of not, but as someone who has sleep apnea I highly recommend that if you're a heavy snorer, wake up in the middle of the night with your heart racing, or find yourself nodding off in the afternoon you see your primary care physician ASAP. A CPAP machine in an inconvenience, but it's probably better than an early death.

It holds a heavy weight on my heart, the common refusal to see the person that is on the other side of the screen as a human being with humanity, feelings, a story, pain, joy, fear, love, tears, and not only that and maybe even worse is the acceptance for this weakening of our humanity. Thoughts and words~ sound, which manifests itself in our world. What affects the person affects the people. ...... Here, I want to give you something. It's an imaginary cheesecake! share it with everybody! Trust me there is plenty! It's the hugest cheesecake that you or I or anyone who has ever seen a cheesecake has ever seen! I found Indiana Jones after dissing him while hitching the Rocky Mountains. Sorry. I heard 'Live' in your voice. And the guy wouldn't let me have the tape either! He knew how important having that tape was and wasn't telling me. Oh well.
