This is spot on the way a lyric tenor should sound. No muffling, clear, precise legato, open elegant sound and a great interpretation - anything Hadley sang should serve as a model for those who are interested in the 'real' sound and technique transcended through the centuries and sadly almost totally lost in our age.

You are absolutely right! Both about Jerry and about the modern opera.

This aria sounds especially tragic, when you think about his fate. R.I.P.

The human voice is one of the most mysterious apparatus to produce beautiful sounds. This guy was singing like a God here. And then very shortly after, his voice started to have so many problems. He sang correctly, even if some people would say that he was pushing, and without any perceivable problems. He was an intelligent and studious person who loved his art. I would like to know what really happened at the physiological level with his vocal apparatus. Anyway we enjoyed him so much in his good years.

i don't see the pushing at all. He seems quite open and free vocally. He could bring the intensity down but this is healthy vocal production.

I am nowhere near the tenor Jerry Hadley was, but I have had occasion to rip a few good notes like that, and it isn't pushing. You can tell when it's pushing.

He was great, but he was also pushing. I thought he really pushed at the end.

Probably a combination of things… Slightly singing off voice (not how LoMonaco taught), singing very wide rep from musical to Puccini and I believe also that the mental health started to decline, why I don’t know. It is so sad.

His tragic and most lamentable death has led to everyone calling him underrated in his prime, but not to asking why he was underrated. In my experience of him in those years the voice, pushed or unpushed, could not fill a large theater with sound.
