I fell in love Jerry Jeff Walker and his music in my 20's and here I am 77 years old and still in love. One of a kind, never to come again, his music changed me for all these years and I am grateful for his unmistakable talent.

The song is simply timeless. It's as if your hearing someone secret thoughts about a true love. Now, I absolutely adore Nanci, but nothing comes close to this version right here.

What a loss . . . . . I was a 20 something Brit living in Dallas in the mid 70's and some of his shows on Greenville were outrageous. I missed the news of his passing, now having a JJ binge sat inn Thailand . . . . . . what a man and what a character. Give em hell Jerry . . . .

I remember as a kid, my dad lived in an Apt complex, where a car had a Jerry Jeff Walker bumper sticker, and I always thought that person was some country bumpkin. Turns out they knew something that I didn't: Jerry Jeff Walker is a talented musician and a great songwriter. This is just an amazing song. It doesn't hurt that I'm falling for a girl name Sally...
@FrancoS595 жыл бұрын
Morning Song to Sally is so sweet and intimate that only the feelings you feel could give you an idea, and not the words you can write ... Sometimes it seems to me that this song has moved the boundaries of tenderness and sweetness that can be expressed forward with a song .. In any case, this song is a masterpiece.

I've been a JJ fan since the very beginning and have seen him no less than 20 times. I find John Inmon to be the very best at his craft; I think he adds so much to JJ's art.

As the morning light stretched in across my bed I thought of you Remembering your laughing eyes and all we said I love you too And as all my thoughts of you pass 'fore my face a thousand times The way they race my heart... I cannot say it all in lines How the short time together lasts so long Makes me strong As two weeks came and went then you and I were gone Living on For it seems our love was destined To be caught in other nets But the love we held so brief I'd chance again without regrets Yes, standing by the road has been my song before Much too long But now somehow I'm forced to See me there once more And that's the song And my waking thoughts of you are Just extensions of my dream Without you here beside me I'll never know all that they mean So as the morning light stretched in across the bed I thought of you

In about 1968 Jerry Jeff and David Bromberg (sideman) played The Main Point, which was a folk venue outside of Philly. I don't remember if he sang this song that night, but it's maybe my favorite Jerry Jeff Walker songs. The second verse cannot be found on line, at least I haven't found it. My guess why is that Nancy Griffith's version does not include this verse. I remembered it from the record long time ago. "Morning Song for Sally" is one of my favorite songs to perform.

By the way, Janet Says is one of his best and it is puzzling that it is so buried in the past. Check it out, might be hard to find, it's on Five Years Gone, released in about 1969.

I recognize the guitarist - John Inmon, as Mel noted - and the bassist, who is Robert Livingston. The steel player looks to be Lloyd Maines and the drummer is never shown, although my guess is that it's John's and Bob's teammate in the Gonzo Compadres, Fred Krc, who also backed up Jerry Jeff in the Bandito Band.
@Fordworldrallyfan6 жыл бұрын
WOW, I did not even recognize Lloyd there, as I've never before seen a pic of him when he was that young. Makes sense, given how other-worldly phenomenal the steel work is on this video version (he is one of my all time fave, top 5 pedal steel players ;) ).
@CousinPike5 жыл бұрын
I believe you are correct on all counts. Definitely Lloyd Maines, and I believe Steady Freddie Krc.

This is the best song this man has written (among very MANY gems, and yes, "Little Bird" gives it a run for it's money!). I LOVE Nanci's cover as much, but this version here, with the crying pedal steel (IS that the GREAT Lloyd Maines?!) adding all that much more 'high lonesome' feel to the mix, and yeah, the soul of the one who wrote it, and who had to actually feel the emotions to be able to write it, just is beyond compare! Was this above video recorded in 1993/1994?
