What many dont know is he is also responsible for greatly improving Agricultural production in Ghana, he met up with Norman Borluag in the 80s to map out a key strategy of growing hibreed corn and reducing malnutrition. There were many facets to JJ, but one common factor which was he wanted to improve things for all.

For those who keep asking what he did for Ghana 1. He transformed Ghana's economy. How??? We were on the brink of not being able to feed ourselves as a nation. He brought back the hope of self sustenance through agriculture. This sector was being killed by the corrupt military leaders who preceeded him. Ghana was over reliant on importation of foreign goods, food, and services. He changed that. Google up how much countries spend on importing food and tell me that doesn't shape an economy. 2. Regularisation of market prices. When greedy Bastards who only think of their pockets hike prices of food, the poor masses suffer. Of course, it wouldn't mean anything to you because you hardly care for the poor (if not, you'd have seen what JJ did). 3. There was no rule of law in the country. The rich especially, did whatever they so pleased. The country was filled with nepotism and favoritism. Military rulers before him messed up the economy greatly. Just as the colonial masters wanted. Rawlings changed that narrative. 4. There was no accountability to any one for those in power prior to his presidency. People were looting and stealing national monies with impunity. 5. He really fought corruption to its barest minimum during the revolution. Let's think of this: how come a government official/worker (who is the son/daughter of a poor man/they have no inheritance) who has only worked for about 4 years have about ¢9,000,000 in his bank account when he's only paid ¢1000??? Moreover, they were questioned and they couldn't tell where they legally acquired that amount of money. Isn't such a person embezzling state funds and therefore corrupt??? Isn't their action causing the poor masses to starve, have lower standards of living in life, and thereby killing them off systematically? Why would you feel pity for a man/woman who doesn't care whether the other millions of citizens are fed or not when he's tried and executed? 6. He brought renewed hope to the people. He gave us a sense of belonging, a national identity and a spirit of African-ism. 7. When you become a leader and you hear that some people want to kill/eliminate you or are trying so hard to pull your efforts down, don't act, laugh with them, invite them for dinner, and pay for the construction of their bullets okay??? Millions love him for who he is, of course he had his flaws, and you'll have your flaws when you're put on a throne. It's only the descendants and associates of corrupt military leaders, benefactors of unfair trade dealers/deals and traitors who wanted him dead or fail in his quest(albeit, they were sorted and executed) will always have a problem with him or fail to hail his achievements. NB: He killing corrupt people was as a result of the majority of the nation crying "LET THE BLOOD FLOW". Go read it up or better still, find you a neutral person to educate you on it. The people ASKED for it and it was for the good of the nation.

You wasted space by typing things that arent factual. This man did nothing but close down Ghanaian owned businesses all over Ghana and sold almost all our state-owned businesses to foreigners. This includes selling Ghana telecom to his wife for pennies. When we were hit with inflation rather than getting experts to work on the issue he foolishly blamed traders for charging high prices and went about killing anyone who did not sell at his proposed price. Even his own aid Kwamen Ahwoi wrote a book called " working with Rawlings" where he categorically states Rawlings didn't have a plan to rule the nation.

It is worth mentioning that not many African leaders are willing to willingly give up power and transition from military rule to a democratic and constitutional government. However, this particular leader accepted the verdict of the people and relinquished power without any fuss. It is also worth mentioning that he never kept any foreign bank accounts or sold public properties to his friends and family. This is a rare feat among African leaders.

Let me ask you a question. Is Rwandan President Paul Kagame a dictator? Was Muammar Gaddafi a dictator? Was Thomas Sankara a dictator? Was Kenneth Kaunda a dictator? Was Sertese Khama a dictator? Was Ian Khama a dictator?. When a president in our continent fires the cabinet ministers due to corruption is that dictatorship? When a president in our continent tells us that we should be united and even feed ourselves instead of borrowing money from other countries? What is wrong if a president says that we should give our children African names that are heroic so we don't copy the Western cultures like homosexuality, lesbianism and gay so it that dictatorship?

I grew up in Kumasi, and I kid you not. They did not like him there, I grew up brainwashed to hate him as the devil. But as I grew older, and got to know Ghana, got to experience the real Ghana, failed state institutions, and the inept leaders!! galamsey, pollution, armed robbery, lack of security, corrupt judges, corrupt politicians, corrupt chiefs, corrupt security apparatus, unstable power, unstable currency, unemployment and general lack of hope for any youth!! I now understand why Jerry Rawlings did what he did in 1979 and 1981!! I get it now.... and I agree with him.

The chief cornerstone that people rejected Jerry had a vision for Africa but big man syndrome from other African leaders stood on his way he never realized or used his full potential just like his commrades Thomas Sankara, Tom Mboya, and even Kwame Nkurmah and Col Gadafi Jerry used only 20 percent of his talent and Africa abandoned him including his own country Ghana.

Wow! Probably you people just came from Mars. I lived through it and can tell. Facts: Rawlings was the most brutal leader in Ghana by far. An armed robber in the corridors of power. Never ever apologetic or remorseful for the evils he caused till death. Hijacked the democratic process in 1979, killing an elected member on Parliament (Afrifa) among countless others making himself judge jury and executioner. He lashed market women in the open, (Kumasi-Kejetia and Accra-Makola) for selling at market rates above his ridiculous control prices. All wealthy citizens owning Mercedes Benz cars had to park them in the regional administration offices with ignition keys in place for members of his military junta to use freely; to avoid dire consequences including beating in front of own children and long detention which people barely survived. When he finally bowed to pressure to hand to over to elected officials, he immediately started planning a 2nd intervention and within 27 months democracy in Ghana was grounded through another senseless military coup in 1981. His hatred of private entrepreneurship hampered our food supply and production processes, contributing to our worse ever famine in 1983. These evil characters tend to appeal to Pan Africanism to hide their misdeeds. Guess even Stalin and Idi Amin “died in peace”, so what can we say, may God be the judge.

People are oblivious to the nonsense that most of us had to endure under his leadership. The generation don't know much about his regime . Had it been for US and ecowas navy stationed close by ready to invade the country Rawlings would have never transfered power.
