He also pounds a left handed 1/4 note on the root 1st with pinky while rocking back-n- forth from the 5th to 6th with his thumb…his right hand hitting the chord on the “&” … his cousin Mickey Gilley used the same riff on his hit “the girls all get prettier at closing time “ . I fronted them both back in 1985 at the HighKicker Saloon (a Gilley’s Club nock-off ) in Pontiac, MI.

You play just like the "killer" Brendan. Always brilliant piano playing Sir! If you ever listen to the 1989 soundtrack from the movie "Great Balls of Fire" starring Dennis Quaid as Jerry Lee, I think it's Jerry Lee at his best. He played and sang all the music for the movie. Thank you for taking some time out for Jerry Lee Lewis, he's definitely one of the founders of Rock and Roll.

Jerry uses the pattern you show in his later years- BUT it is not the original as used in the original "Whole Lotta Shakin" etc. In that he plays the left one octave lower- and plays c-e-g-a-eflat-e-eflat-e and after every bass note play a triad in the right hand. So the pattern is one left hand note- a triad, alternating left-right etc making the appropriate chord changes per the blues pattern. Of course this is assuming your playing in C. This is a simple explanation and does not take into account the runs to F and G- but if you try it you will soon get the idea. Once you get the basic pattern down you can begin to modify the right hand. This pattern was used by Jerry up till about 1965. And of course it goes without saying he never played the song the same way if he did it ten thousand times!
@GregoryBreed5 жыл бұрын
I'm a total beginner. Please explain. If he plays e flat in that C chord sequence wouldn't it come out sounding like a minor chord? I haven't tried it, but do you mean that you are tying it in with major chord work with the right hand? Sorry for my naivety.
@devonmoors Жыл бұрын
Good question!Pity you did not get a reply!
@regmason2329 Жыл бұрын
@@devonmoors Mr Bland, sorry I did not see your comment until today! It's been a few years- but I will try to be short First, there are MANY patterns one can use to achieve the "feel" of the song. One simple pattern is c e g a g a g a, playing an inverted triad in the right hand- g c e. Remember it's one ( or more) in the base followed by the triad in the right. You can also hold c and e down (turning them into whole notes) while playing g a g a- in the left hand of course. As far as playing e flat as mentioned earlier- without getting technical- it will work fine. There is so much that could be discussed, but this is too long as is!! Good luck, your probably way beyond this by now anyhow. PS playing on a digital piano with rhythms and accomp will make your playing so much easier. Cheers

I realize that this is not a right-hand lesson but (from your demonstration), am I right that a defining element of Lewis' right hand is the use of the repeated 9th/Tonic crunches, as well as the repeated minor 7th solid interval?

I've always wondered how JLL managed to make that pumpin' piano sound. Simple chord work pumped real hard with the next note after the end of the chord. What is that called? I know the note before the last note is called a sustained, eg the F in a C chord. Excuse my naievity. Only just found you. You rock Brendan.
@seancurran67274 жыл бұрын
He does rock. The "f" in a C chord would be the fourth, the next note you refer to is the sixth, an "a" note. Think of it this way, the boogie pattern here is 1-1-3-1-5-1-6-1-5-1-6-1-5-1-6-5, no matter what chord you are on. The chords themselves are just C, F and G, Rock 'n Roll.
