I think Ricky's comment about Jerry's ability to find common ground is valid, because everyone experiences the observations that Jerry often depicts and invites us to relate to. I agree that Jerry doesn't find commonality by saying I suffer the same way as you, rather Jerry elevates the audience by saying 'you have experienced this as well' . There is common element of empathy in comedic work. Jerry is absolutely right in saying it has to be funny, and there is a magic to the connection, because he has made a connection for us that has always been right in front of us that we somehow couldn't see.

@austin789933 жыл бұрын
Ehhh I disagree completely. Jerry truly believes the comedic type is kind of a being that is above the average person. And it's not narcissistic because he doesn't think he's the best. He thinks MANY great comedians are on that mantle I think. Watch his show comedians in cars. He really has conversations along the lines of "I honestly have trouble interacting socially with people who aren't comedians. I seek comedians out at parties. I just feel like they get me and I get them and we speak the same language." In this, he talks about the whole "Comedy is like gold. Doesn't matter why or how it's funny. You just find it. The rock doesn't matter." What he's essentially saying is that it doesn't matter how you get there at all (like wealth), but there are haves and have nots. I think he very much believes anyone who would pay to see him on stage is not on his level comedically. Which is right imo. You wouldn't go to a Basketball game and be like "Oh he wore the suit into the arena to show he's a common regular man." No. Jordan. LeBron. Luka Doncic. Whoever. Those are superhuman people who can do things that you can't do. It's not based on race, religion, sexual orientation, or what have you (again his who cares why), but there are people that just ARE better than you at their craft. And I don't think he has any shame admitting that. In the way you'd say maybe John Lennon saw the world differently and knew it, Jerry Seinfeld I think has no problem putting himself and other comedic greats on that type of pedestal. And he's kind of right. These people are different. They're special.
@Malt4543 жыл бұрын
The suit reflects the respect for the audience, and the self respect, that comes with Seinfeld's professional approach to comedy - people are paying to see a professional, not a guy in a sweatshirt at an open mike. I don't think there's any real degree of humility to it; it's more about being the top product that people are paying for.
@Malt4543 жыл бұрын
@james griley - Your perception of a suit isn't the same as everyone else's. You don't "have" to wear a suit to be funny, but that's not the point; some people just have more formal ideas of professionalism than others. It's not about your respect for Seinfeld, it's about his respect for his audience and for himself, regardless of what other people think.
@Malt4543 жыл бұрын
@james griley - It's about respect for the business relationship between the performer and the audience - if you could understand that elementary point, you could stop embarrassing yourself by pretending that you have ESP or know anything about me. It's not my fault that you can't grasp what I'm saying or that the world doesn't see itself through your lens.
@Malt4543 жыл бұрын
@james griley- Again, you think you can read my mind - and you're a bit of an idiot. My point is I believe Seinfeld's idea of professionalism is simply different from Carlin's, and that it's expressed differently by different wardrobe choices, even though both are respected as professional comedians. If only Seinfeld cared about what you thought about how he dressed, he might dress differently - but he dresses how he does so, evidently, he doesn't care about your opinion of it, and probably never will. By the by, the best writing you've done so far is by quoting me.

Jerry is flat wrong. You can't avoid jokes which might be offensive (or which people might SAY they find offensive) because anything interesting and of substance will offend SOMEONE. The solution is that you perform the act you want to, and the people who are offended fuck off and watch something else instead. If people don't want to be offended that's fine, but they shouldn't have the power to stop OTHER people from hearing things they find offensive, because then the most offended person in the world gets to decide what everyone else is allowed to say or hear. That's literally the opposite of what should be the case - people should be able to hear or say anything, and then personally decide which things they want to take themselves out of or away from.

What Gervais is talking about is a cultural difference and how it effects comedy, you don't have to justify being super rich in America, there isn't the same sense of class or needing to apologise for having things better than others. If you came on stage right from the off in Britain in a 3k suit perfect hair and being as smultzy as Sienfield was in his early days people would think you are a "smug wanker" especially men... The British working class can't stand any bloke who has tickets on himself or even appears slightly too, you have to be constantly downplay yourself, especially if handsome or so forth. What's called confidence in America is arrogance in the UK, it can be exasperating and hold people back, cause depression, all sorts, but at-least we they aren't brash, arrogant wankers :)... Funnily enough Seinfeld never really took off in the UK at the time it was on, Perhaps this has something to do with it, they didn't identify with Jerry so much....

I can't tell if you and the other guy are trolling, but if you aren't, and you are trying to say "They are too soft on college campuses", it's "they're", not "their". "They're" = Short for "they are" "Their" = Speaking of something that belongs to/is attributed to someone, as in "it's their fault" or "he took their money". "There" = Location. "It's over there". If you WERE trolling, I guess I just wasted my time.

I've grown in appreciation for his stand up, he's one of the few people who can do decent standup that remains clean, it's not the most exciting stuff, that's why shock comics get all the attention, but what he does is actually more difficult in the long run.
@DaveMiller23 жыл бұрын
@@Roy_1 When talking about comics, "edgy" means I need to swear and talk about farts and sex to be funny. Jerry is good and doesn't need to do that. You are correct, what he does is harder and more intelligent. Those shock comics all think they are Pryor or Carlin. Those two swore like sailors but they understood words and language and did it for specific reasons at the right times. Both Pryor and Carlin could be just as funny without swearing at all. They were deliberate with the profanity. Shock comics just do what Eddie Murphy made fun of in RAW and swear and talk dirty all the time. Jerry Seinfeld is reliably funny. In my opinion he isn't the funniest comic by any means, but he is always good.

Jerry thinks "funny" is an objective term.
@swingset19693 жыл бұрын
It is in terms of intent and response. If the response is bad, universally, it's not funny. If 3 people laugh, or 300, it's funny. Intention to make laugh = laughter, is objectively a measure of funny in terms of a comedian. Now, the subjective part is the listener and the particular joke, but in terms of "success" it's something that can be measured.
@coaldoubt28793 жыл бұрын

This is why comedians should never speak about anything unless they are on stage. When a comedian has to explain why, he's no longer a comedian, he's just another schmuck with an opinion.

In fairness, they are only schmucks with an opinion when they ARE comedians. A professional in any field is merely has an opinion backed up by skill, knowledge and experience. You don’t surrender to their opinions on the basis of their job. Even a heart surgeon has customers who seek a second opinion.

@@ericwilliams626 to clarify - I think it was Dinesh Dsousa who wrote about the cult of expertise in left leaning authoritarian politics. They defer to the authority of the professional, as if an amateur can’t have legitimate contributions to the public debate. This is why the left has collapsed when academics in non scientific disciplines claim the science says gender is a spectrum. It might be, but the distribution does not justify transgender bathrooms for example. The word of an alleged expert is supposed to trump all others. And this is the point - Eric rightly identified they are just schmucks with opinions off stage, but I believe we are all in the same boat. I’ve spent far more time thinking about music than Ricky - so I have some useful contributions in the subject of stage performance. The cult of expert authority would hold that his position as a professional performer would mean I don’t get to contribute. Jerry has a different position. We can all have opinions but your opinions don’t matter to him. He doesn’t defer his authority to anyone. And we should all do the same! Have enough confidence in yourself to say “no”.
