Jerry Seinfeld just gave one of the best commencement speeches I've heard in years at Duke University. He gives three keys to life, and it's beautiful advice.

Seinfeld worked hard and invested in his show as he believed in himself. Became a billionaire because of this, that then gave him an opportunity to make a simple yet truthful speech to alot of college graduates that probably needed to hear it. Hopefully they go on to make their lives successful like he did.

And I'm sure he paid his dues as a stand-up comedian. Not an easy life. Becoming "Seinfeld" probably had some luck involved. Rarely do people achieve his level of success without some element of luck.

Let's get one thing straight. Seinfeld is where he is because of his industry connections. There are hundreds of thousands of comedians that work their asses off that fall through the cracks because they don't have the right people that they know. Let's not suck the man's dick too hard here. We all know that this industry is about who you know. There are lots of people in the entertainment business that do not belong there but are there because they knew the right people and were in the right place. That's all it takes.

Initially I thought the difference between passion and fascination was rhetorical or semantic, but using my neighbour as an example it starts to make more sense to me. She just finished a college certificate program in veterinary office work - working a half course load due to a mild learning disability. She is passionate about working in a vet's office but by the same token, has very little intellectual curiosity about what that even means. She is in love with the *idea* of it - passionate - but has no experience in office work and from what I gather no understanding of the nitty-gritty of what it means to write correspondence, take appointments, file medical info, etc. etc. Someone truly fascinated with the idea would have made a deep dive into all those things rather than simply get through the course material which described it all at a high level. At least, this is what I *think* the difference is based on Michael's/Jerry's comments. And now I find myself applying those definitions to my own motivations for hobbies and work to see where I fit in. Very thought provoking segment.

As a parent in a homeschool coop, you probably made that coop's whole year. Those kids and their parents are working hard and probably all really appreciated having you, reinforcing that even though it's not accredited education, even if there were only one graduate, you did their tiny community a great honor by taking them just as seriously as any other place at which you could officiate. Love this :)

For most, our passion is something we can, and should, do as a hobby. Very few people become professional athletes, singers, musicians artists, actors, etc. All those things we're told if we're not passionate about it, we won't make it. When actually, when it comes to those things, practice is essential, but luck and having connections play just as much a part. But you can do ALL those things as a hobby. Find something that interests you to make a living and then enjoy your passions as another part of your life.

I work to afford my passion...music. I love playing it, creating it. At 52 years old, I know that I'll never be a millionaire from music, whether it's DJing, playing the drums, noodling on my Strat, writing lyrics to have an AI music generator do the rest, but it's something I've always been passionate about ever since I was a toddler in the 70s.

I haven't been keeping up with Jerry Seinfeld, but he was my favorite comedian (Dear Kristin, FreedomToons, Choice42, Babylon Bee, and JP Sears are current creative funny favorites!) is now my favorite funny person!). Really appreciated the "clean comedian" approach. The Seinfeld tv show had junky stuff in it, but, I think it had enough redemptive aspect to it, that it's a great show, and imo, the one of the best I've seen! Just my opinion..... 1.Twilight Zone 2. Seinfeld (Seasons 1-7 before Larry David left and the characters became caricatures) 3. Simpsons (Seasons 1-8 before they lost the heart of the family...the Tracey Ullman Shorts were good imo!) 4. Frasier- most consistent quality show that I've seen but I don't think it reaches the peaks of the above. Just watched the second episode of "All Creatures Great and Small," which my friend who has higher standards for entertainment than me, gave it a 10/10, and I never gave any tv show a 10/10, so I might put in on here if I see more! Also, and so I don't lead anyone astray, similar to the above shows, I think there's junky content, but, imo, they were good enough to skip episodes or fast forward through/turn the channel, and maybe now that I'm older I'd change my mind, but imo funny shows I liked when I was younger Home Movies, Malcolm in the Middle, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Impractical Jokers, Cheers, early Spongebob (my memory severely stinks, but I remember Spongebob being the greatest cartoon I've ever seen besides the Simpsons, Batman TAS, and Avatar the Last Airbender!) gotta go! Thanks again! Hope you had a Happy Mother's Day celebration!

Sure, fascination over passion…that is how Hollywood has destroyed great franchises like Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, Shannara, etc. because ppl like Bezos were fascinated with the idea that Fantasy/Sci-fi could bring in billions of dollars. So he then put ppl who were fascinated by the same idea and they produced trash that lacked heart and soul because they weren’t passionate. You get one shot at life. Live passionately. If I wasn’t doing what I’m passionate about and instead pursuing fascination (which btw is fleeting, quickly fleeting, see GOT and the final 2 seasons-failed because they were never passionate about the books but fascinated with the idea which fled them halfway through the project) then I’d be miserable right now. These takes are not good. You’re trying to make it sound good but it still sounds soulless. Smh

Let's make a clear distinction about hard work here. Jerry Seinfeld's hard work, and a blue collar workers hard work are nowhere near similar. It's real easy for someone who's hard work is defined as standing up on a stage for an hour talking, or a few hours a night writing jokes down on a piece of paper, to tell people they should work hard all the time.. because they don't know what hard work really is. I've been working my ass off for my whole life, but since I don't have the connections, and the location that Jerry Seinfeld has, that means that my career opportunities and options are very much different than his "hard work". I'm sorry but I just can't take entertainers seriously when they start talking about hard work! The backbreaking work that most of us have to do is unsustainable because our bodies will eventually start breaking down from the actual work that we have to do. You're looking real healthy Jerry Seinfeld😂 wish I had your hard work
@thegentlelivingchannel
@thegentlelivingchannel 16 күн бұрын

Sure we would all love to make millions while not having to break our back but we don't have the options like someone from California or new york. You're being really obtuse if you can't see the difference. They act like the work that they do is the same as the people in the dirt. It's not, and they have no right to say keep working till your dead because their "hard work" is easier than most work. Jerry is why multiple networks were battling it out for him to do a show. Jerry. Not Larry. Larry specialised in alienating crowds and being booed off stage. He has spoken about this very openly and honestly many times. If not for Jerry, you wouldn't know who Larry is. You may now return to your staggering ignorance.
